Why can't I lose weight?

This is odd. For the past couple of years I've had the same measurements:

174 pounds
5"9 tall

give or take a couple of pounds. I ate whatever I wanted.
Anyway, not fat, but losing 10 pounds would be an improvement.

So three months ago I decided to lose some weight. I went from playing tennis once a week and jogging once a week to jogging three times a week and playing tennis twice (Also increased jogging distance from 5-6miles to 7-8 miles per day and speed). In addition, I started eating less in quantity and also less fat. I eat about 1,700 calories a day which consists of about 70% carbs, 20% protein and 10% fat.

Yet, for some bizzaar reason, three months later, sticking with this routine, I still weight 174 pounds. I don't think my body compesition has changed much (Maybe legs are a bit stronger, I make better jogging time now than I used to).

I enjoy it, so not planning on stopping, but shouldn't I be dropping some excess fat with this routine?!

Lean Muscle weighs MORE than fat

so when you start to work out you'll loose fat and gain muscle so for the first few months you'll probably weigh about the same as when you started
if you Bulk up a lot you'll probably end up weighing more than when you started

don't worry about pounds just worry about your body fat %

If you do say 1-hour of cardio a day and reduce your calory intake by 20+% you WILL loose fat, it is iimpossible not to. But as Kitty said, this may not affect your weight initially, as muscle weighs more than fat.

Well, I haven't "started working out". I do mostly aerobics. And I have been doing them before only less. I probably gained a bit of lean muslce, but my guess would be VERY little. And my body fat % is the same (20%, though it's hard to measure small changes).

If you have significantly increased your cardio exercise and significantly reduced your calorie intake over a 3-month period and not lost any fat, you should see a doctor. This is not normal.

A good cutting diet is 40% Carbs, 40% protein, 20% fat.

1700 calories a day is way too little. Eat 2400 and do REGULAR (as in almost daily) weightlifting and cardio a few days a week as well.

Eat clean foods and avoid refined sugar whenever possible.

There is no healthy fast food.

Also...with doing all that cardio and only eating 20% protein, you're going to end up burning muscle.
It's inevitable.

Dont eat after 19:00 ..
Do sport everyday but dont do it with full power.
For loosing fat you need to run longer and not faster ..
Same with bike and evey workout you do .. Do it longer but more easy then harder and faster .. When you stress yourself with hard workout your body panic and collect as much calories as possible after your first meal .. This way you wont loose or it will take you years ..

Have you ever tried running two hours after a meal? After a meal I find I have to wait for six hours before I can run. I do however eat one of those energy bars two hours before the run.

Thanks everyone, some good info here.

Best advice is to train in the morning before eating - your boold sugar is low at this point and you will burn fat much quicker (take a black coffee pre-workout to enhance the effect).

Also, tennis and jogging may not burn fat if you don't get your heart rate high enough, you should try get your heart rate in the 125 - 155 bpm range and keep it there for at least 20 minutes. Running or cycling are generally best for this.

Caffine is usually considered a good fat burner so try a few cups throughout the day

I do sport at least 4 days per week 2 hours after my last meal ..
I dont run but I bike or swim ..
For bike its not a problem at all .. For swiming is better to wait 3 hours but its all depends on what do you eat ..
When I plan some workout for evening I dont eat heavy meals ..
Swimming by the way does wonders ..
Its also great anti stress shit and you sleep like a baby .....

First, I want to lose fat, not weight. Second, my body fat % is 20, which is about 6% too much.

My HR is in the 140-170 area and my jogging sessions last for 1-1.5 hours.

I have started jogging in the morning recently. I heard it's good for burning fat but in addition, it's a lot nicer. Air is cleaner, body is cleaner, not a lot of people...

You are providing false information ..
For burning fat the best heart rate is 115-135 and this is also safe heart rate for long training .. Putting your heart on 155 heart everyday is not needed. You need to train you heart with such high rate only once per week.
In this one day of training you can reach 155-175 (depends on your age of course) but not higher then your maximal rate heart whichi is easy to calculate using 220-your age=your maximal BMP rate.

For training of course you can use whatever hours you . If you run outside of course morning hours are great with fresh air ..
It doesnt really matter but if your plan is to loose some fat first then the best way to do its 2 hours after your last meal ..

I have medical education

start to lift weights and do cardio more during the week. maybe use an excercise bike 3 times a week as well at a decent speed/intensity.

drop calories down to 1500 by dropping carbs. protein levels are fairly low to begin with.

Actually, not eating works like a charm.
Two and a half years ago I had the worse throat infection ever. Took three different types of antibiotics until I got rid of it.
I stayed in bed for two and a half weeks with a high fever and not being able to keep any food down. Lost 19 pounds.

As for coke, that works too, but it's very expensive. Not to mention I hear it can kill ya

This is your problem . You train yourself too much ..
Your body must save as much calories as possible. You wont loose your fat that way very fast .. It will take you years ..

Try to workout easy .. Dont make you heart rate go over 135-140 for 2 weeks but keep work out for 1 hour .. And you will see great results .. Its very simple mechanism. If you take alot of enegry your body will start save it otherwise you will fall down..
If you take less energy your body wont panic and will let it go ..

People tend to be more healthy and active when they move all the day.. Postmans is a great example ..
They move all day without intensity.
Moving without too much intensity its normal for human..
If you all want to get more detailed information I can write it down here of course but its not needed. Less you know more you happy .. But overall you need to know that sitting whole day front of your pc and making 1 hour crazy workout with such high BPM rates its not very healthy .. Especially if you eat alot of unhealthy shit ..

You could also have an overgrowth of Candida (a natural yeast). Try Pro-biotics to normalize it. Ppl with too much Candida have trouble lowering their % body fat. Dr. Atkins was starting to uncover this fact right b4 he died. The candida ends up mutating into a spore and stores itself in the fat cells.

<3D

*good luck* :-)

i dont think "jogging" is necessarily a solution. my body adapts very quickly to any cardio i am doing unless i am pushing myself very hard and mixing it up and increasing the intensity.

the fact that you are asking porn webmasters advice for exercise suggests that you have not met too many porn webmasters !

its been tested that you burn more with a more intense workout, obviously not sprinting but there has to be intensity. really wanna lose weight you can do what some of us did to drop weight classes, run at a good fairly high pace with a garbage bag for a shirt. if you want to run around all day of course you'll lose weight but some people have a life?

if you're working out etc and eat unhealthy you're an idiot anyways so it really doesn't matter what you do. thats the people who complain they don't lose weight while eating a bag of cheezies.

Body For Life, man.
I know it works because I lost weight on it before my last baby, and it was FAT weight, not muscle weight. i felt better, slept better, was less stressed, and was more productive when I followed the plan. And it's free....you can find all the info you need online-you don't have to buy a book, buy any supplements, etc. I'm sure it would help, but you don't have to. The only thing is that it is more expensive than eating regularly. That's the only reason I haven't hopped myself back on it....I have four kids to feed on a very tight budget, lol, so I wind up eating the cheap food myself-rice, bread, etc., which of course is HORRIBLE for me as a main dietary source of nutrition.
But anyway, enough about me, lol.
Look online and you'll find some stunning changes in people who do the plan, and it really isn't very difficult.

you may want to get your blood tested for high thyroid levels. a fucked up thyroid can make it extremely difficult to lose weight.

there are supplements you can take to help even it out, think its called guggulsterone or something.

thermogenics work too at helping to cut weight.

Weight doesn't mean much in your situation. What has happened is that you have lost fat but gained more muscle from the increased exercise. So you have probably noticed that even though you have not lost a pound your clothes fit better because muscle takes up less room than fat.

no weight training and taking low levels of protein. noway muscle was gained to offset fat loss. something just isn't adding up.

I enjoy it, so not planning on stopping, but shouldn't I be dropping some excess fat with this routine?!

no worry on that shit - post a real problem
