Exercise gurus: Theoretically, about how much muscle weigh can you gain...

in about 1 week?

Just wondering, because I've put on something like 11 pounds this last week and I don't know why.

I had the lap band surgery, and I was really dropping like crazy, I am still eating well within the range of the plan *probably 1,200 calories a day or less*.

I swim every day for 30+ minutes...in fact I've made such strides as going from only being able to do about 4 laps in the pool to 20.

But ever since I started to approach the 260 range *was teetering around 264, I started creeping back up. Like 2-3 pounds a day and weighed this morning in around 276. That is still way down fro 325, and I do realize that I will be replacing fat with much heavier muscle, but 11 pounds in 1 week just doesn't sound right.

you would be lucky to gain 10 pounds of lean muscle mass in a year. significant fluctuations in weight like that are usually attributed to water retention/improved hydration as a result of dietary changes. however, muscle memory plays a role in that you can regain muscle that you have had and lost in the past fairly quickly... but not in a week, usually over 4-6-8 weeks.

usually its a combination of factors anyway.

just stick to your plan, ignore the scale and be consistent in doing your thing

i do heavy weight training and im lucky to gain 2-3 pounds of muscle a week. its really hard to tell, i can fluctuate 5 pounds of weight in any given day from food and water weight. you being a much bigger guy i'd assume you could fluctuate much more than 5 pounds.

Yeah, I didn't think it could be muscle...I'm sure it's a bit of muscle. I of course will continue with the plan, but making such huge changes in your life little blips like this can have a depressing effect on you...LOL

That most probably water retention...assuming you are eating and exercising right.

As far as muscle gain per week goes. If you do it naturally (no roids) and eat about 1-1.5 grams of Animal protein per pound of body weight per day you will gain about 1-3 pounds of muscle per week..until you plateau. Once you do plateau, you will need to increase the protein intake and change up your work out a little.

This is assuming you know how to work out you muscle groups properly.

Ray

1 - 3 pounds of MUSCLE per WEEK? You guys must be joking. The human body cannot naturally synthetize more than 0.2pounds of pure muscle per week. Anything above that is fat, water, glycogen.

11lbs of muscle per week is normal for a webmaster to gain from extreme hardcore weight training. For the normal, average human (non-webmaster), 11lbs of muscle gain is impossible. But, then again, we are webmasters and this is a fitness forum full of atheletes.

There is no way that you gained any muscle at all eating 1200 calories at your weight. That's way, way under maintenance. You have lost muscle if anything and started to gain fat now because your body is in starvation mode. You have to eat more but really clean food and keep lifting weights and doing cardio and you will then gain some muscle and lose fat at the same time at this early stage of the game in your post surgery regimen, which is what you want. Go to BodyBuilding.com and search for caloric maintenance calculator to figure out how much you need to eat.

besides the obvious fact that you can't gain 3 pounds of muscle a week.. if he was obese and eating 1.5 grams of protein per pound of body weight, he would be eating 3000-4000 calories just from protein alone, each day.

Wrong. A big guy like that has FAT to burn for energy ... as long as he is doing the work required to "damage" the muscle fibers they will repair and gain in mass, thus "building muscle". Now someone who is very lean and trying to build muscle mass on 1200 calories is a different story.

In any case the amount he would build in a week would definitely not be 10 lbs.

If he's gained eleven pounds in a week eating 1200 calories, that's a problem, and a sign that his diet is not in order. No matter how you slice it, 1200 calories in a day for a 276 pound man is a bad idea , especially if he is exercising vigorously. This diet will result in a failure to change the composition of his body and possible health problems before long if his estimate is really accurate. His basal metabolic requirement is well over 2000 calories, and he could actually be losing weight and fat safely, steadily and slowly while truly gaining muscle that he will keep by eating clean foods over in that range. It's a lot easier to make progress that way.

This is definitely true. I'm not sure how you would have any energy at all to workout with so few calories at 276 lbs.

The 1200 calories a day is a rough estimate based on my normal diet here lately.
For example:
Breakfast Light vanilla yogurt - 90 calories
Lunch Bumble Bee Tuna Salad w/ Crackers - 230 calories
Dinner Chicken Caesar Salad -
1/2 oz lettuce - roughly 20 calories
2oz of chicken white breast meat - 86 calories
1 -2 tbsp Girard's Caesar salad dressing - 78 - 166 calories

Throughout the day I have 2-3 Tropicana fruit splash drinks 38 calories a bottle so roughly 117 calories a day.

Occasional desert Dreyers sugar free fruit popsicle - 20 calories

Total maxed out - 720 calories

Some things that might be different is I would eat a beef patty with some cheese on it...but that would almost balance out with the chicken salad w/ dressing.

Other days I will eat scrambled eggs for breakfast.

So yeah, most days I get under 1,000 calories a day, and some I get 1000-1200. I am only supposed to eat 4oz per meal, it's kind of hard to get more than 1200 calories a day on such a restrictive diet.

Honestly, I have more energy now than I have had in a long time.
I swim daily, and when I walk I can walk much further than I have been able to in the past.

For example, the Fashion Show mall here int own is a pretty long mall. In the past I would have been able to walk it, but would have had to sit down a few times or would have been in a lot of pain.

The other day, I walked 6 laps around that mall with a friend, and we sat down twice, and only because he wanted to.

I'd absolutely ignore the scale if I were you. There are other factors that come into play like water weight and stuff like that. Just make sure you keep up with the regular physical activity. It's also how you feel and how your clothes fit that make the difference.

EW - Here is a great protein supplement that a friend of mine who also had the band surgery used to take after her surgery. Even though I never had the surgery done, I started taking it for my workouts because it's such a great product! It's easy and convenient, you get an entire 42 grams of protein in a little 3.1 ounce bottle....no sugar, no fat and only 176 calories.

You can check it out at http://www.idssports.com/product.php?id=9919&cat=10

They have done studies and it is a lot harder to lose weight if you swim a lot. Something to do with the cells always being hydrated. You should pick a different exercise.

Whoa! You seriously need to increase your food intake!!! At this rate you're losing water and muscle and slowing down your metabolism to a screeching halt. You're eating as much food as a 100lb chick should eat.

Throw away the Tropicana juice and any liquid 'carb' calories (soft drinks, beer, alcohol). Yoghurt counts as liquid calories - if you have to eat it eat natural yoghurt the 0.1% fat kind. No salad dressing.. use italian if you have to which is vinegar and olive oil. No 'tuna salads' they are usually made with mayonaisse (saturated fat). Remove 'snacks' aka junk food and deserts. Eat 4 solid meals a day and 2 protein shakes. Eat a lean source of protein at every meal (chicken, turkey, lean beef, fish/seafood, eggwhites, whey protein shake). At your weight you need to eat at LEAST 2000 calories. You'll be dropping fat and even gaining a bit of muscle if you're hitting the weights hard.

Whoever gave you that diet should lose their medical license if they are a doctor as they are putting your health at risk (again). It is into malnutrition territory. If you made that diet up yourself you might want to reconsider. Most people vastly underestimate their caloric intake if they don't use precise tools like the software on FitDay.com to figure it more exactingly.

I'm glad you feel good Eros, despite having every reason not too but like Eman says above, if you are really eating that little, that is way too low, and you are starving yourself. And what you are eating is not a good diet. A mixture of lean meats, vegetables and some limited whole grains and solid fruits, plus water or 0 calorie teas 4-5 times per day would be your best bet. And the timing of how you eat during the day matters as well.

This thread made me hungry, here's an example of a good lunch for a 276 pound man (or a 155 lb. man for that matter)

Extra-Lean ground turkey meat seasoned with low sodium taco seasoning with some red kidney beans and quinoia, a rice-like South American seed that is high in iron and related to the spinach plant, plus a few chunks of watermelon, washed down by some zero calorie green iced tea. Yummy, healthy and stomach filling!

I had the lap band surgery, I can't eat more than 4 oz per meal 3x's a day.

I honestly don't think I could do more than 1,200 if I were to try.

usually its a combination of factors anyway.

just stick to your plan, ignore the scale and be consistent in doing your thing
Quite sensible advice.

I would add to watch your salt intake. I never add salt to food. When I cook I use other seasonings, some of which already contain salt, so adding more salt just isn't called for.

Snub the salt.

I had the lapband 15 months ago. Down from 315 to 202. I was at a standstill at 240ish til I started living at the gym. My metabolism is too good right now, I can literally eat a bucket of KFC skin and not gain. As per muscle, I stopped doing all cardio and started doing heavy weights, because I am melting away and I don't want to look weak. Those efforts have stopped the weight loss and I know I am gaining a few pounds every other day. And this is with some heavy protein drinks and around 9 small meals a day.

Now if a girl is 15 lbs overweight I am disgusted, whereas last year I would have fucked her fat rolls. Be careful what you wish for......

About 3 years ago I was considering the band. Can anyone who's had it tell me what side effects you've had? Feel free to icq me if you prefer not to post on here.

Thanks!

Mike

Initially I went in for the bypass but my stomach is backwards...found out on the surgery table...so they went back in the next day to do the band.

I had some severe nausea after the surgery and diarrhea , but we still don't know what that was about. Other than that I have not had any other side effects.
