Quitting Smoking....best method?
Not easy....what has worked best for you?
Patch, Nicorette (gum, mints, inhaler), cold turkey, champex?

You must go cold-turkey. Period. If you continue to keep nicotene in your body, you will eventually smoke again.
Plus, nicotene regulates your body's processing of food, sleep and focus. So you need to clear that out. Get lots of water, juices, and fruits. Stay away from any alcohol for about a week, at the very least.

For me, I just quit buying them and picked through butts for a few nasty days until there was no tobacco left in my house. That was it. Sounds easy, execution of it was easy, but man was it ever not easy. Good luck.

I used to think that I couldn't enjoy a few drinks, or worse, more than a few drinks, without smoking. But I can. When you quit smoking, you have to do one day at a time. Otherwise, you get caught up in the "well, the Phoenix Forum is coming up...." Every day of the forum, or your vacation, is still ONE DAY AT A TIME. And with the drinks, its the same, its one drink at a time. If you go watch a game with friends, don't think, "well, by the 4th quarter, I am going to need to smoke." Just think about the drink in front of you. You will realize you are more in control than you think. If I didn't drink, I would have no smoking issue. So working to overcome that has been my priority. Hope this helps.

I quit a month ago, what I did was smoke about twice as much as normal for a couple days so I felt tired and kinda sick of them then just stopped from there. Main thing is to keep your mind occupied.

I quit a year ago last month after smoking for 33 years, I asked my doctor for some help and got a prescription for Wellbutrin, an antidepressant that doesn't make the cravings go away just makes smoking a lot less enjoyable, it was decided to try that before trying the much more expensive Chantix.
I hated that shit, you can't sleep while on it. I took it for about a week while still smoking then cut way back the second week, the third week was cold turkey. Doing things to keep your mind off of it is key, if you dwell on how much you want a smoke you will eventually go out and buy a pack. Stay away from alcohol, coffee etc. anything that makes you want a cig more. I'm still smoke-free after a year, and I still miss it every day. |

Get away from anyone that smokes... go cold turkey.. drink lots and lots of water.. If you can stop drinking beer thats a plus. I quit and havn't smoked for 2 years.. I never thought that would happen. Oh if you could stay out of bars that would be great too.

- Stop smoking. Don´t try to reduce the amount the cigarrettes that you smoke.
- Get out for running or make any other sport, fell how fucked your body is. - Don´t replace the cigarette with anything but a bottle of water. - Think about all the people that think you will never be able to stop smoking. Get angry with them, use that fury as energy for you. - Don´t even think that during your whole life you will be missing smoking. People like me that one day stopped smoking can tell you that the feeling of being out is so great that I can´t understand anymore why people smoke. - In case you are desperate, call a friend that you really know he or she will say the right words that you need to hear. - Good luck man! |

The recipie: No alcohol Nicotine patch - works like a charm It's only been 2 weeks for me, but it's not hard at all. One day I even forgot to put it on, and didn't even realize.

1 pack a day for about 13 years here.
Quit smoking cold turkey 3 weeks ago. You know what I did when cravings were bad? Ate tic tacs. When cravings were the worst possible and enough to go up and buy a pack? I took a nice smooth hit of pot. Pot & tic tacs helped me kick the habit. -------------------- It's strange and easy to get discouraged when you hear people say they "miss it" or, "still need one every day" after quitting. I know that fucked with me - but when you go through it you realize that yeah you'd still enjoy that cigarette, but you've regained control over the choice you make not to. And choosing not to is ultimately what you lean towards. It's odd, I am REALLY happy to be free of it 99% of the time. 1% of the time I think about how I want one and how it would be nice - but simply don't have the motivation to break my commitment and resolve. Corey - when I drink I bring a joint with me, step outside and smoke it like a cigarette. Helps a lot. *********** How many of you smokers reading this thread had the urge to light up at the remote, subtle thought of YOU giving up the habit? Think about that, the hold it can have over someone. Quite ridiculous really. Glad I am free.

I haven't smoked for a couple years now and it wasn't easy quitting. I did it several times for a few months at a time and always went back. I used to patch a lot and eventually it worked, I can't imagine stepping down without at least that. I was actually addicted and it was physical. Pretty much though I had to use a lot of psychological tricks like adding up how much money I was saving and setting celibration dates and etc. I actually bought a pack for someone else about six months back and they moved before I could give it to them and I smoked the pack without getting my habit back so now I'm sure I can smoke when I'm drinking or something if I chose with no problem. I would suggest quitting drinking and drugs if you do either while you are trying to quit at least in the short run. I drink my ass off, but try and quit that all the time with less success

i did 2 weeks on 21mg patches, 1 weeks on 14 mg patches and 1 week on 7mg and then went cold turkey. the patches are good at getting out of the habit of reaching for a cigarette, and once that's broken its easier to beat the addicition. that's how i did it last month and it was succesful and i was a bad addict.
when you go cold turkey it can really mess up your blood sugar levels and make you feel dizzy, sick, lack of concentration etc so have some chocolate or fruit on hand for a few days until your body levels out again. |

Actually I found drinking coffee helped me. I had always smoked and drank coffee together, so I would drink a cup of coffee and feel like I had just smoked a cigarette

I still cheat A smoke here or there when I've been drinking, but I don't count the may 3-4 smokes I'll have in a month when I'm super wasted.
I should have that habit even worked out soon enough, and I can notice myself holding back more and more even in those situations now. I found the inhaler to be great because it replaced the oral fixation, and the need to be flicking something around between my fingers. For the first week I probably had that inahler in my mouth 16 hours a day, but eventually you start working it away. Gum never worked for me, cold turkey I've made work (though is tarted again withn a couple months) but it was damn near painful, and it turned me into a raging asshole for a at least the first week. Not so much with the inhaler. |

Cold Turkey.
I gave up smoking in about 97, and carried a pack of unopened smokes with me for months - just avoiding it is not a good plan. If you have them and you force yourself to stop, it's a battle of will, but it will work. Shit, smokes are like $5/pack now. Noo thank you.

Cold Turkey is probably not the way unless you are getting locked up in solitary confinement or something like that with the psychological shock that goes along with it and quitting is the least of your concerns thus it's just an after effect.
My point is, if you have a real life, it's hard to quit things that give you a little relief, but if life isn't there any longer (thus solitary confinement), it's a lot easier to quit, but do you really want to go down that road? |

That's what happen to me. I had a bad chest cold and my girlfriend who is an RN always tells me about all these people dying of emphysema and COPD and how they cant breathe.
I didn't want to be that guy in a hospital bed at 50 yrs old unable to breathe, so once I was sick and didn't smoke for a week, I said that's it for me, no more. I used some nicotine inhalers for a little while... maybe 2-3 weeks...just when i was absolutely dying and about to break i would use it. If you stop now depending on your age your lungs can recover from the damage. Best of luck..it's not going to be easy. Quote:

this may seem like the dumbest advice for quitting smoking, but believe me it works when practiced perfectly.
1. decide not to smoke any more cigarettes. 2. don't smoke any more cigarettes. i'm serious though, all substitutes are merely crutches, you have everything u need to quit already, so just use your willpower and commit. anyway, i'm gonna go have a cigarette. |

Have a heart attack. My Uncle who was a 4 pack a day Marlboro red smoker had his first at 37 his second at 40 multiple bypasses and all kind of other stuff then a 3rd at 50. Turned his hair pure white. Doctor told him if he light 1 more cig he dies period. Had not touched a cig in 10 years. Runs and is in better shape than me today and I'm 20+ years younger.

I quit cold turkey just over 3 weeks ago. It hasn't been easy, but not nearly as difficult as I was expecting. The only aid I've used is Dentyne cinnamon gum.

If you think you need to use a product, do it. Anything you need to boost your @motivation@
Then do all the things you associate with smoking. Drinking, eating, sex... take advantage of your high willpower. Then get used to the new habit. Always have fruits and vegetables around cause you're going to be looking to replace your oral fixation (ladies please contact me via icq). Its amazing how just after a few days you will notice a difference. Especially cardio. Good luck. |
