I quit a year ago last month after smoking for 33 years, I asked my doctor for some help and got a prescription for Wellbutrin, an antidepressant that doesn't make the cravings go away just makes smoking a lot less enjoyable, it was decided to try that before trying the much more expensive Chantix.
I hated that shit, you can't sleep while on it.
I took it for about a week while still smoking then cut way back the second week,
the third week was cold turkey.
Doing things to keep your mind off of it is key, if you dwell on how much you want a smoke you will eventually go out and buy a pack.
Stay away from alcohol, coffee etc. anything that makes you want a cig more.

I'm still smoke-free after a year, and I still miss it every day.
