ok i want to get my body in shape for summer and i need some good exercises i can do with weights.

especially for the torso

here's a good start:

eat every 3 hours - 3 or 4 meals a day
don't eat anything with fat
do some cardio stuff as long as the cals OUT is more than IN in a day
drink water

do that for a few months and youre done

torso? as in abs? Don't do weights with abs because it will make your abs really thick and make you look fat with your shirt on. Just do regular ab workouts.

it comes down to DIET DIET DIET. Cut down on your carbs and your abs will show.

Your diet must consist of fat. It is unhealthy not to consume fat.

If you want to get lean consume 60% protein, 20% carbs, & 20% fat. Try not to consume saturated fat as much but more unsaturated fat. For carbs consume complex carbs with a low glucose index. Stay away from simple sugars.

Joe, dont' focus on just your upper body. Find a good circut of machines in yoru local gym and get conditioned all around for a month or two.

Jumping in and doing a full blast iron routine won't do anything but make you not want to go to the gym in a few months. It happens all the time.

Once your body is ready for the hard stuff, come back here or ICQ me and I'll tell you all the "secrets" you need to know.

Eat healthy fats

Even when trying to gain mass, eat several meals.

If you haven't lifted weights before, don't jump into some big tough routine. You'll stop after a week or two of massive doms

do a lot of cardio exercises. eat fruits and vegetables for good digestion. an apple diet a day would be great. avoid eating too much rice or anything very fatty.

exactly correct, just get toned and lose the weight---the "abs" are what's hiding under the fat---get rid of the fat and you will have the "abs".

but exercise is necessary for toning. i recommend bicycling and bowflex.

lots of used bowflex on ebay.

There are a few elements essential to getting into permanently healthy shape.

1. Food. This accounts for 80% of your program.
Go to http://www.calorieking.com and create a diet plan that fits your body type and current weight. You don't want to starve, but you want to make sure each meal contains a carb, protein, and small amount of good fat.

2. Cardio
This creates an environment for your heart's health and gets the blood moving, plus it is a calorie burner. Thirty minutes, with a five minute warm up and 20 minutes of true exercise and a five minute cool down should do it. Do a resting heart rate and adjust from there.

3. Weights/Resistance
Again, Bodybuilding.com has some awesome exercises you can do from your home if you can't afford the time/money to join a gym.

4. Vitamin supplements.
'Nuff said.

When you plan your meals, make sure you eat when you awaken. This is what gets your digestive juices flowing and kickstarts your metabolism.

Rest one day per week. It's important for those muscles to heal.

Do not work on the same body part two days in a row.

Great advice. Same with the food being 80% of it. Your body composition will change drasticly in the first couple months without going crazy with the weights.

Only extra advice I can add is not to ignore fats. Flax Oil, fish oil, etc are your friends. Aim at making each meal protein + carbs OR protein + fats.. also after you work out have a gatorade and something (whey protein if you can). You'll recover faster with an insulin spike and some protein coming in after you lift.

Although you are not overweight you should still eat less saturated fat and more protein. It is recommend that if you work out you must eat .8 to 1.5 grams per pound.

First determine your body mass index. Measure your fat percentage. From that you can determine your lean body mass to determine how many calories you need to consume.

As far as workout, yes start out slow. Be consistent in working out but change your workout every week. Remember that it's not important how heavy you lift but how intense you are. Rest 30 seconds between sets instead of a minute. Have correct and perfect form.

BTW I know what i'm talking about. this photo is of me. I have abs without doing any ab exercises. Those are merely from dieting.
