Health Nuts, come take a seat inside, please.

Backstory, my father died almost 3 years ago at the age of 48 (3 days after his 48th birthday to be exact) of a massive heart attack, doc said he had 3 main arteries 100% clogged, he wasn't a fatass (ya know, like sleazydreams) but he did have a belly, he should of, he was a truck driver and getting old.

Anyway, me and him eat almost the same way, meat and potatos, and alot of unhealthy food, well i'm bigger then he was, and it scares the shit out of me knowing that if he died like that, i could go the same way, maybe even alot younger then he was.. and well, i wanna start eating healthier, so what are some meals, and food you guys would suggest to help accomplish this?

I'm open to everything, i love fruits and veggies, but it was always just easier to grab a burger from mcdonalds or something, but its time to buck up and start eating better

If you can afford a personal trainer, it's absolutely 100% the best way to go. Get an exercise and diet that fits your lifestyle.

Good luck with it. When I was training to fight, I allowed one day a week to eat anything I wanted...kind of a reward...and it helped keep me on track for the rest of the week.

jbot... simple. Buy a foreman grill and cook your meat on that. That will help a lot. Grab a handful of carrots once a day, dip em in a tiny bit of ranch if you need flavor.

What else... if you know it is unhealthy (chips, icecream) just don't eat it.

Besides the basic "eating better" tips, exercise is important if you have heart problems in the family. Also look into foods that will help your heart out like real oatmeal, fish, etc.

Google "burnthefat" - probably the best eating (and exercise) program out there - gets back to the basics and well worth the $20 or so for his ebook - the chapters on food are great as he actually goes into how the metabolism works and how we store stuff - Ive had two heart attacks and since I started eating using his guides and recommendations, Ive never felt better and it actually feels like the arteries are clearing some (I did have to get some rerouting and stents done a while back before I started this)

SImple approach - the closer the food is to the ground - the better it is for you - and I eat 6 meals a day - but I eat all good stuff - from buckwheat pancakes to eggs to veggies to fish and meat - but its all done in moderation since I can eat 6 times - and the weight has melted off of me. The only exercise I do other than the pretty active stuff I do outside on my land (from wood cutting/splitting to carpentry etc) is to walk on a treadmill 3-4 times a week for 20 mins

Here's my own tricks to stay lean and some that my good friend told me when he got diagnosed with high cholesterol and a main artery clogged at 98% at 50 yrs old even though he wasnt 'that' overweight...

-I drink green tea daily. It takes a while to get used to the taste but once you are used to it, you'll learn to like it. Green tea is pretty much the healthiest beverage (after water) that can be consumed in my opinion and alot of health professionals too.

-Get your cholesterol checked every year, even if you're young.

-To avoid fast-foods and the big mac that's easy and quick, try to do the effort of doing your groceries meticulously once a week and think of food that you will prepare for yourself in advance for your week.

-Read the labels as you do your groceries, be careful of the fat, cholesterol and trans fat content of what you buy. Dont do your groceries while hungry because you'll tend to buy stuff that is easy to cook and you'll end up just eating frozen dinners and fatty un-nutricious foods.

-prepare your food in advance; cut veggies and put them in a topperware in the fridge so when you have the munchies, you will tend to eat healthy already prepared snacks instead of digging into a bag of chips...

-If you are not into eating fruit, drink them. You can easily do smoothies with pretty much all kinds of fruit and you can also freeze the fruit to use them later.

-Cook food in vegetable oil (olive oil is my choice) instead of butter

-If you are worried about your cholesterol level or you do have a condition; buy PSILLIUM. You can find it in health food store in a powder form and add it to some foods, or you can buy cereals that already contains it.

-Exercise at least 3 times a week for a minimum of 30 minutes. This is always the hardest part for me because i tend to get really motivated with exercise for a few months and then I get busy and never find the time to do it anymrore. If that's your case try to change your habits by walking to work or to go do your chores, or bike there.

(My friend had to change completely his diet when he got diagnosed with his heart problem and now after 3 years, he lost 30 pounds that were mostly in his belly, and his cholesterol is perfect... so far so good, if you are serious about it, you dont have to go trough these health issue but you have to be careful and constant)

That's pretty much all for now. good luck!

i would do the personal trainer thing AND do research if i was you. doing a google search isnt going to get you a personalized diet and training program.

ask someone who knows what they're talking about? would you rather have your medical advice from someone who "knows what they're talking about" or someone who does it for a living (a doctor).

The best thing to do is drink 1/2 your weight in water, so if you're 200 pounds, drink 100 ounces of water every day. Plus if you can eliminate as much pop from your day, it'll be a good start.

Also, since you have a history of heart problems, do what someone else mentioned and monitor your cholesteral. I myself have a history of heard problems in my family, so I've been getting it checked every year. Also keep a close eye on your blood pressure.

Jaysin,

I think you should really take whatever inspirations you get from this thread and figure out the rest elsewhere. Hey if we ever meet at a show or something I'd be happy to talk with you.

I highly advise Lacto-Vegetarianism, and a lot of regular walking in fresh air.

Peace, Good luck, and very sorry to hear about your dad dying so young.

- Vic

the fact that you even asked that, is a good sign why you should hire one.

most initial consultations are free.. what do you have to lose?

I hired one and am not regretting it one bit.

Really increase your fiber intake. Either via vegetables or if you are willing eat a bowl of oatmeal each morning.

Next would be to cut out any and all high fructose corn syrups from your diet, check those labels.

Then while you are at it reading labels cut out any and all transfats then also feel free to lower as much as you can any saturated fats.

Of course do go in for a check up. Have your blood pressure and cholesterol checked as soon as you can. Then have them monitored often. Ask your doctor if your body is ok to do excersize and if so what types, just to play it safe.

Beemk: this is why you should READ. I said a "tiny bit".

That doesn't mean an entire serving.

Eat what you want. Your body craves what it needs. (but yeah... maybe dump the fast food and soda)

Two 20-minute sessions of cardio 4-5 days out of the week.

I'm sure part of your dad's problem was that he sat on his ass all day for work... not that what most of us do's much different, but ya gotta move around, and get your circulatory system flushing.

Hey Jaysin,

From one ex fat-ass to a potential ex-fatass...

Eat more often. Eat more. But only good shit - eggs and oatmeal in the morning, salmon and spinach salad for lunch, apple and low fat cheese for snack, chicken breast and veggie stirfry for dinner, cottage cheese with some blueberries and almonds for a snack before bed...

Try to do 20-30 mins cardio every morning... try to lift weights 2-4x a week.

-Well hopefully you don't smoke because I've heard that contributes to bad arties.
-Take fish oil, flax seed oil, basically any anti-oxidant you can as well as a multi vitamin.
-Drop soda and basically all of that high fructose corn-syrup business
-You don't have to eat fruits all day but at least try to get an apple or a banana in yourself one time.
-Watch how you cook things. Example: Don't fry things.

Try to do 20-30 mins cardio every morning... try to lift weights 2-4x a week.

thanks for the info guys, and yeah Jayvis, my dad was a heavy smoker, sometimes smoked a pack a day while on the road, only because he had nothing to do, about 6 months before he died he started to chew on candy instead of smoking so much, but i guess he didn't do it early enough

a little more help for ya

I don't smoke, i love water, i drink soda/pop but like a can a week, i love fruits and veggies, exercise isn't much, thats because i spend 16 hours a day at this machine working...

I love being active, but i'm a workaholic, during the summer time i played football and baseball atleast 3 times a week, now that winter is coming, im gonna probably pick up hockey, and swimming at an indoor pool

my car has been parked in my garage for 2 months because i rarely leave town, and theres no reason to drive 2 blocks to the post office or grocery store....

Eat less, and walk more. Start out with a walk around the block 3 times a week. Then increase after two or three weeks.

personally I think the best move you can make is high quality multi-vitamins and probiotics. Also, instead of meat try fish, its amazing for you.

I bought a juicer and have not regretted it a bit. I though carrot-beet-kale-apple juice would be nasty but it is actually good. One of my favs is apple-celery juice with some hemp seed oil.
