The battle of an overweight webmaster - nutrasystem?

So, a nice majority of us I'm sure either a) work from home in our offices or b) work in our offices for most of the day (or for the lucky several, for an hour on a good day ), but for those who slave at their machines for the better half of the day, I'm sure you've either put some extra weight on, or had a weight issue present before any of this webmaster work came along. I'm one of those who slaves at the machine. Question is, have any of you tried nutrasystem? I know several around here who have and lost massive amounts of weight with it, but these people have everyday "normal" jobs where they have to get up at normal hours of the day, shower, dress, go to their car, walk at their jobs at some point or most of the day; basically get more excercise than we do...so I'm curious if anyone in the same boat as me has tried nutrasystem yet? I'm going to order it next week and see for myself but feedback would be great.

Thanks!

JM

Haven't tried nutrasystem, but the Weight Watchers diet has helped me lose some nice weight lately, no exercise involved and no going hungry or craving. You might wanna look into that.

I know it'll raise a load of shit here, but HOW overweight? I was up to a size 44 waist. Big. I went on Atkins (and gave up boozing). Got down to a beefy 36, and quit the Atkins. Now I barely fit a 32 and look like I have AIDS.

Nutrasystem has the same problem as the others: You can cheat. It takes willpower. If you have willpower, almost any non-instant-fad-24-hour diet will work, except those that just shed water weight (that fit the fad diet).

toonpornblog,

I'm about 6', 278 lbs. Waist size is up to 46/48 now.

DamageX,

I did the WW diet a long time ago, went down to a size 36 myself, however the issue is I'm left with some funky stomach issues only after I ate WW food exclusively for about a year and change.

With above being stated, sure the NS diet might be in the same league as WW, but at this point it's like ya have nothin to lose. Damned weight with this work combined just won't shed. I don't know about the rest of ya, but I'm here usually from about 10am (sometimes as early as 5/6 AM) until 3am and sometimes even work a few days in a row without sleep. So it's rough to get time in + energy to excersize for me at least.

Ah, ok, so I guess you can say that you are where I was. If you have stomach problems (I've had an ulcer since I was a nervous little kid), Atkins can be a bit difficult.

Honestly, I'd say to consult with your doctor. If you don't have one, have a quick consultation with one - they can take your weight and issues into consideration, and suggest what may work for you.

Just don't start jogging until you take some of that weight off, or you're going to blow out your knees.

it is true the webmaster lifestyle is VERY bad for the body. and there are only so many hours per day to exercise.

at your height you would probably be very healthy at somewhere around
175-185 depending on how much muscle mass you want.

as someone here said ANY diet program can work but it is a LIFESTYLE change that is required and staying power.

you must design a diet/exercise routine that YOU can do long-term. at your current weight you will need about 18 months to get into top physical condition and get the flab off, any faster and the weight will not stay off.

you need BOTH cardio vascular AND resistance training to tone the body, and you MUST get on a very strict diet regimen for good health and long term weight control.

i am an advocate of bicycling 30 mins daily (either outdoors or with bike trainer) and bowflex, and a "raw foods" scientific diet heavy on unprocessed foods, fruits and vegetables, (usually steamed) whole grains, with some salmon, tuna, or chicken---but there are other ways to do it. you must limit salt and sweets. sweets will trigger food binges.

it did take me about 1 year to get in top physical condition, but i was not fat to start with.

you do not need any "canned" diet system---you need to learn about what the body really needs for health, read labels, prepare your own meals, eschew eating in restaurants, and take control of what you put in your mouth.

you can have a filling diet where you feel full on just 1800-2000 calories/day. but you MUST eat the right foods to do this, you should eat many little meals so you NEVER stretch your stomach, so a small high fiber meal will create satiation.

LOTS of info online, no time for a sermon today, but you cannot leave the responsibility to others for your personal health---get the info, implement the plan, and understand that it takes TIME, DISCIPLINE, and some actual physical WORK to stay in shape and be healthy.

good luck to you.

Jerzee ;),

Lemme tell you a little something about big fitness companies like weight watchers and nutrisystem... They specifically formulate their diet plans so that you will fail. Their failure rates for each client, average around 95% and a big portion of the people who fail, not only put on the same amount of weight that they were able to lose, but gain more back. They like this because they can keep coming out with new diets, and both new and old clients will keep coming back spending more money. It's because all canned diet plans neglect a universal law, which is called the law of individual differences.

In order to really make the adjustments you need to make, both your diet and your workout need to really cater to your personal preferences.

Anyhow, I run a few fitness sites/services. I just launched one recently, I advise you to check it out and join www.fitpractical.com

I always found that eating right and exercise worked better than anything. Problem is, that it's only for people who seriously want to lose weight and get in shape, it's not for those who just want to feel better about themself because they think they are trying.

What forced me to start eating better is finding out I have celiac disease. I had to stop eating anything containing gluten or else end up wearing a shit bag one day. That means no cookies, no donuts, no pizza, no fast food, no fried food, etc. It's comically tragic because I'm about to marry an award-winning pastry chef. Now I'm having smoothies for breakfast instead of pop-tarts and snacking on dates intead of sweets. So yeah, pretend you have this crap. Maybe that'll be the next fad diet.

starving yourself is starving yourself (losing weight solely via calorie deprivation)... it doesn't matter what "diet" you choose to do it.

the only healthy choice is to get your diet under control, plan your meals and exercise.

its hard. i'm just as bad as anyone.. sometimes i work 20hrs a day. sometimes 48 without stopping. as you know, its very easy to eat shit food along the way. being a webmaster, is not a lifestyle conducive to good health unless you make it that way. I have been slacking the last 6 months, but i now make time to get exercise, go for walks, eat right, lift weights, play racquetball and eat well.

you can lose weight any way you want... unless you make changes in your lifestyle, its only going to be temporary.

Okay, here's the deal on why Weight watchers (and many other diet programs) are short term success stories and long term failures:

They don't teach you anything except to eat their pre-made, pre-measured food. They don't teach you how to cook better, how to eat better, or how to live better, just how to buy their food.

My personal experience is going from almost 195 down to right about 160 now, so I have a little bit of experience in the game... and I am over 40, which makes it twice as hard.

Top 5 things you can live without: Soda, McDonalds, fries, sugar, and chips.

Top 5 things you could really use: Decent filling food, exercice (walking is good enough), water, an understanding of food, and some motivation.

My suggestion is don't go on a diet, go for a LIFESTYLE CHANGE. Don't drive thru to get anything. Don't even eat at places with a drive thru window. Don't have the soda or the sugary drink, have water. Stop adding so much sugar to your coffee. Cut out the junk food. Learn about what you eat, learn about what you need to eat, and work it out.

278 pounds didn't come overnight, you know EXACTLY where each of them came from. Reverse the process.

Get a dog! I walk ours at least five miles a day, and they need routine so you have to do it at regular intervals throughout the day. Walk everywhere that is feasible to, use the stairs rather than elevators or escalators.
As already said above, don't go on one of he 'fad' diets, just change the way you eat, go through your cupboards, throw out all the crap, fill the refridgerator with fruit and veg, fruit juice and the like. If possible don't by pre-made meals, cook your own from scratch, you know exactly what goes into it then. If you can handle it for a while cut out the dead animal part of your diet and eat veggies only, there's a lot of hidden fat in some meats.

I'm the other end of the spectrum with weight problems, my doctor has told me I need to seriously increase my calorific intake, which is difficult when you don't have an appetite ( I don't get munchies anymore when blitzed for some strange reason either).
