weight lifters: dumbell press or bar? both?
which do you guys prefer... i think they're generally the same in what they do so i usually do both... but i've always been able to do more than most people with dumbells, but my bar has been somewhat weak.

Dumb Bell!
Bench press is a joke..If one arm is weaker the other arm helps to push up..dosen't give correct control. When someone says they can bench press 150lbs ask them ok.. Bench press 75lbs each hand dumb bells See if they can do it. With out there body shakeing |

Dumbells. Dumbell shoulder presses are better because they hit the medial delts much better than full barbell shoulder presses. The truth is you are probably getting enough frontal delt work by intense incline benches so your best shoulder exercises would focus on your medial and anterior delts. Cable upright rows or upright rows using a cambered curl bar are more important for you than standard barbell presses.

Barbell bench is for building bulk upper-body mass. Nothing is even close to it in that respect.
Heavy dumbell bench builds mass as well, but it's a more concentrated exercize and since you can't move as heavy a weight, you're not using as many auxiliary muscles in the movement. Dumbells give a deeper stretch, and range of movement, but do not build mass as well as barbell press. Barbell press is the king of upperbody exercise if you're looking to get big. Ask any professional bodybuilder that question, and they'll tell you. Edit: However, both are great for getting lean mass if used together. One isn't as effective without the other. |

I agree, you have to do "power" exercises as well.
I don't agree with ONLY doing dumbbells. Sure dumbbells are wicked, I use the more than the bar, but you NEED the bar to get the power. Same as cheat curls and anythign else. Don't do ONLY them, but if you rip a few off to develop power, you're doing yourself a favour. I love non-focused exercises as a change. Clean and press is WICKED. It helps you all around. |

Both are good ... Dumb bells hit many of the smaller "control" muscles that bars just can't hit as well.

I like the clanking sound my 5lb dumbells make at the top of my reps. Plus the bar weighs 45lbs, and who can lift that?

It depends on what you're trying to accomplish. In most cases however, you can get better results with dumbells. If you are trying to gain serious mass and strength, barbells are necessary. The top mass gaining excercises require barbells- Squat, Shrugs, Bench and Shoulder Press. Lifting heavy is dangerous and really unnecessary unless you are really trying to put on some size. I have completely elimanted Bench Press from my workouts because it's too hard on my shoulders and I'm not planning on competeing in powerlifting anymore.
Don't forget that the cornerstone to any successful workout program will always be diet and cardio. |
