Sure dumbbells are wicked, I use the more than the bar, but you NEED the bar to get the power.

Same as cheat curls and anythign else. Don't do ONLY them, but if you rip a few off to develop power, you're doing yourself a favour.

I love non-focused exercises as a change. Clean and press is WICKED. It helps you all around.
I used to powerlift competitively years ago. I did no concentrated movements; only heavy deadlift, squats, and bar bench presses. One day a friend of mine told me to pick up the dumbell 100's for inclined presses. I was barely able to pound out 3 reps.

That's when it occured to me that you NEED that full range of motion dumbells provide to increase overall strength. And obviously the opposite is also true.

We used to scoff at the guys in the gym who only did dumbell presses. They weren't big guys, and when you put them on a bench with a straight bar that had just a little more weight than they were used to, they got crushed.

I think also it makes a difference in intensity when you realize that with dumbells, if you can't do the rep, you can always just toss them down to your sides. Mentally, with an olympic bar (and over 300lbs in plates on it), the urgency of a successful lift is a little more apparent. Of course, you should always have a spotter regardless.
