It depends on what you're trying to accomplish. In most cases however, you can get better results with dumbells. If you are trying to gain serious mass and strength, barbells are necessary. The top mass gaining excercises require barbells- Squat, Shrugs, Bench and Shoulder Press. Lifting heavy is dangerous and really unnecessary unless you are really trying to put on some size. I have completely elimanted Bench Press from my workouts because it's too hard on my shoulders and I'm not planning on competeing in powerlifting anymore.
Don't forget that the cornerstone to any successful workout program will always be diet and cardio.
