Barbell bench is for building bulk upper-body mass. Nothing is even close to it in that respect.
Heavy dumbell bench builds mass as well, but it's a more concentrated exercize and since you can't move as heavy a weight, you're not using as many auxiliary muscles in the movement. Dumbells give a deeper stretch, and range of movement, but do not build mass as well as barbell press.
Barbell press is the king of upperbody exercise if you're looking to get big. Ask any professional bodybuilder that question, and they'll tell you.
Edit: However, both are great for getting lean mass if used together. One isn't as effective without the other.
