5 pound muscle gain in 5 days, is my math off?

several weeks ago i posted my results from my ultra low cal/no exercise program where i lowered my bodyfat to 11%ish.

i've since moved into phase 2- up the calories to +400 over required + reintroduce exercise.

check out these numbers, i will start at february 11th, so you can see the pattern-

2.11 159.2 31 12%
2.12 158.8 30" 11.6%
2.13 156.6 30" 11.6%
2.14 156.8 29.75 11.9%
2.15 156.4 29.75 11.2%
2.16 155.4 29.5 11%
2.17 155.4 30 11%

2.19 158 11.5%

2.22 160.5 10.9%

i've kept to my diet, having one cheat meal friday nite, no booze.

so i've gained 5 pounds muscle in 5 days?

seems a lot.

also, i went from ~1000 calories/day to 2200, mostly due to adding carbs, whole wheat and such.

how are you testing your bodyfat %?

are you testing at the same time everyday?

are you keeping your hydration levels the same thorughout the day?

yes, i use the omron hbf-306 every morning when i wake up- i piss and then weigh, check body fat and measure my waist.

i do believe my h20 intake has gone up since adding cals and exercise, i do not know how the omron calcs water weight, but i do find its measurements to be consistent over time. maybe not perfectly accurate, but consistent.

It's probably a difference in water weight. You need to need to add together body fat and water to get the full picture.

Check it on your dog over a one week period and see the results compare to yours.

I know the machine that I use at the gym, which is quite an expensive machine, measures body fat, lean muscle and water. So you can see individually where the gains or losses are.

If your diet has been consistent then water retention should just show up as a spike and will probably go down again. You did say you upped your calories quite a bit. Any chance you're getting substanially more sodium now? That will cause water retention outside the cells, or bad water weight.

Are you using a machine to do measurement by electric current or are you doing it all with calipers? Remember that fat not only stores on the body, but also stores inside the muscle between the fibres. So you can gain fat that won't be measured by calipers.

good idea, i will do that.

i had my bf measured ~18 months ago via hydrostatic, the omron was off 1.5% from that, so while it is not perfectly accurate, it is consistent and has been since that time.

so the 5 pound muscle gain isn't a measuring device inconsistency.

i am going to change the profile on it to athlete tomorrow and see what the results are. maybe with the new exercise regiment, i've moved into that category, but even if it is off by 30%, that is still 3.5 pounds of muscle in 5 days.

good points.

i am staying under 1000mg of sodium daily, but that is ~2x more than i was getting in phase 1. my waist measurement is also very close to what it was prior to the 5 pounds 30" v. 29.5"

but i do think you are prolly right to some degree, i would venture to say it's a combo of water and muscle.

the machine i use is the omron

What you are saying can be done. Have you added more weight on your work outs? More sets? More days days? or dropped your cardio?

Changing your routine and adding calories will give you gains.

What is the most you ever weighed? Because if you were big before its pretty easy to get bigger quicker.

You are a lean guy who seems to really have his diet in check. I saw you staring at Porno Dans giant junk food cabinet (which is huge) while you were hungry and the only thing you touched were mixed nuts. Thats impressive control.

hey Dave!

yeah, the treats around porno Dan's set looked good! i've weighed 195 after a year of serious bulking. the problem for me has always been the cutting phase, i've never gotten even close to vascular, 14% bf is the lowest i've been for a summer time.

this year, i decided to cut to ultra low bf on the front end and then bulk, maintaining solid control over my food intake.

i did completely vary my routine beginning feb 5th and really getting into the groove the last 10 days, adding serious calisthenics & cardio 6 days a week, 30 minutes. my energy level during w/o has jumped, i figured that was due to the increase in carbs, i was below 30-45 g /carbs per day prior, which is insane! that was rough, lolz.

Sounds off to me. I would bet it has to do with your water intake. Just for kicks I have checked my body fat percentage multiple times a day and the readings can fluctuate 5% depending on the time of day and what I have had to eat/drink.

Thats it. You varied your excursus routine, raised your calorie count and you weighed more before.

Good job dude

I will predict you will pick up a quick 15lbs of pretty solid muscle with in 30 day.

you might be retaining water in your muscles. its pretty difficult to put on 5lbs of muscle in 30 days let alone 1lb a day unless you are taking some "supplements"

I agree with you if you are always working out. But if you are not working out and you start hitting the gym hard and you have a good diet, there is always a quick 15lbs gain that most people get.

fluctuations do happen, hell even though i measure same time/ same situation as much as possible, i still get .5% fluctuations, which for me translates to 1 pound.

^ THIS, maybe if your on anadrol and test and its your 2nd week in and its 80% water lol. something is off, wether it be your math or your scale. your not gaining 5 pounds, let alone that in a DAY let alone PURE MUSCLE...cmon now

Edit: i just see you added creatine to your supplement stash...theres your culprit. water is usually calculated as LBM by your device. your merely retaining water from the creatine, especially if its mono

thanks for the feedback peeps, however fast, i am glad i am going in the right direction of adding muscle and still losing fat!

i'm not at all worried about water weight in this phase, in fact, prolly a good thing as i really increase the w/o intensity.

it's fun to monitor everything and see how things change over time.

there we go. i couldn't verify if this was the case or not.

+, i have started the test (day 2)but not the creatine, i've got jack3d on the way.

with only an increase of 1/2" in my waist measurement, i am confident it is a combo increase. the only way to tell for certain is to go get the hydrostatic done again, i will, but closer to summer, prolly mid-april, to give me 6 weeks to peel off a layer or 3 of that pesky last bit of flab

You're not going to gain 5 lbs of muscle in 5 days. You'd be lucky to do it in 50 days.

arnold schwarzenegger said if you're lucky you can gain 5 lbs of muscle in a year. and that's from the grand-daddy of fitness. (set aside all the roid-age dudes do). If you gain it quick you also lose it quick. probably water weight and a full stomach. i'm a gym rat and i fluctuate between 225-230lbs depending on water consumption, sweating and the amount of ass garbage i leave in the toilet. the size of islands i tell you. the inhumanity.

i'm trying to put on some more size on my legs so shooting for 10 more lbs but it's hard. congrats on your progress, i respect the process. pose down! lol
