PS3. I got it cause it was cheaper than any blueray player at the time... and then I got the game station with it. So it completely made sense to do that.

ok cool, i dont think PS3 has dolby truhd when i look it up.

i want the full 9, i dont play alot of video games so to me the extra is not a big issue. although playing PS3 on my projector may get me addicted.

I know the PS3 has the upgradeable firmware, which is something most of the original models didn't have. I'm not sure if the newer ones are updateable or if they just come with the upgraded firmware.

Seems TrueHD is possible, but it takes a little bit or work:

i spent 2 days trying to figure out how to make VGA inputs compatible with the new HDMI encryption.

Yeah...that's basically what the guy who wrote that blog post had to say. Regardless, it's possible...via HDMI cable and some changes to a few settings.

Scaling turns a DVD (not blueray disc, those are already hi-def) from standard definition to high definition format, making it play better on a hi-def tv. It's usually nothing noticeable, just helps the movie meet the native format of your HD tv.

When the samsung was on the DLP out in the living room, honestly it wasn't as crisp as it should have been...

And then in the living room, we now have the real sony blue ray...

You can get them online right now.. on some places for like $299... with a $100 giftcard.. I think hubby said MacMall had some right now for that special.

I'd be willing to bet that the reason there is so many PS3 owners here is
because they bought early.

The PS3 was certainly the best bargain in the beginning as it was cheaper
than most stand alone players AND you got the gaming.

Today you can get a blu-ray player for under $200 or half the cost of the PS3
and many of the high end players that perform as good or better than the PS3
are also going for less than the PS3. So now you are actually paying more
for the gaming aspect of the PS3 when choosing it as a blu-ray player.

The one I'm looking at is Panasonic BD35k and the BD55K is great as well
depending on what receiver you have to hook it up to.

i picked up the Panasonic Blu-Ray for $299 or less.

has SD card slot so you can view your digital camera pics on it.

picture quality of blu-ray is amazing. just bought wall-e and will be watching it this evening.

you could go with an LG or Samsung that allows for netflix streaming, but i read the fine print that netflix streaming was "near dvd" quality if you had a fast connection...and after seeing blu-ray (and HD), not going back to DVD, so definitely not needing to stream less than DVD quality, so wasn't a requirement.

my comcast has a decent amount of HD free movies.

Netflix has over 1,000 blu-ray titles..costs you $1/month extra..but definitely worth it

I was thinking PS3..but all the good games are on Xbox 360, so didn't seem worth the extra expense.

bluray players are cheap now, spend $250 now on one if you think you'll want to upgrade later, you can always move it to another room or pass it along to a friend or family member if you do upgrade

any bluray will have optical audio output for your surround sound in whatever format you want to use

if you do not have HDMI for blu ray the palyer will chop the output in half so 1080 becomes 540, or will sometimes display a blank screen even.

that is why i need HD fury, you may have just said that im not to sure hehe.

The component video outputs on a bluray player, outputs a 1080i signal.
The HDMI output, outputs a 1080p signal. If you cant use 1080p anyway, whats the point in using the 1080p output when you only need 1080i to begin with.

The red/green/blue cables on bluray = 1080i maximum.

i re read it a few times and what i think you are saying is go blueray<---component<adapter>VGA-->projector.
and not use hdfury

so that means blu ray>reciever>projector, and that is where the HD fury comes in. it is pretening to be HDMI all the way down the line.

yeah thats exactly how HDCP works, when using the digital output of a bluray player.

Component output is analog, not digital. That is why it is 1080i maximum.

My projection tv will not do 1080p, doesnt have HDMI input. I use component video output to it, and watch my bluray movies in 1080i.

i knew it was digital signal buti was not aware blu ray is capable of outputting in analog.
