Is orange county considered the boonies?

I live in Orange County in California and I feel like it's the boonies. It's not as bad as say Idaho or Kentucky, I mean there are no fucken cows here and no farms and there are huge malls (south coast plaza) here and of course there is the beach but I still feel like it's the boonies and really boring.

For some reason I think LA is the most exciting city, like really busy and alive and energetic with lots of high rises (I like tall buildings) and it's the heart of the movie industry, but Orange County seems like the boonies, like it's in the middle of nowhere.

I've been to L.A.

It reeked of neuroses and desperation...

Laguna Beach to me is even more "boonies", it's isolated. It's a small town. Yes, it's a wealthy and all but it's not that exciting. That's why all the kids from the mtv show "Laguna Beach" all moved to L.A once they turned 18. (Lauren moved to LA and now is on mtv show The Hills). Seems like LA is the place to be cause all the Laguna Beach kids move there once they hit 18. seems like all the kids want to get out of there and go to Hollywood. Hollywood is more exciting.

Not sure where you live in OC, but I've lived in both OC and LA and I'll take OC in a heartbeat. Of course it depends what your tastes are, and I do enjoy some of the coastal parts of LA county, but no way I'd want to live in the heart of LA. Not sure how you can call it the boonies either as OC has a huge population base, tons of freeway and many things to do.

No it's not the boonies. Jesus.

Population 3,002,048 about 1 in 12 Californians live there and about 1% the the entire population of the US. 5th largest county in population in the US and you ask if it's the boonies?

Also 21 states have SMALLER populations than orange ounty

I would never live in downtown LA but around the West Hollywood/Miracle Mile area.

Why do you like OC more than LA? LA is more exciting, LA has sunset boulevard and movie stars!

It feels too suburban! It's not busy and exciting like LA. It moves slow. I even hate the roads, it's too big and there are too many lanes. In LA, the streets are smaller, like around Sunset blvd it's more crowded, it has more of a "city" feel. I feel like Orange County is suburbia hell. It doesn't have a ton of high rises like LA does, like when I drive to LA I can see all the gazillions of high rises from the freeway. It's just so busy and exciting and crowded. It feels like everyone is in a rush to "go places", like everyone wants to be successful and a lot of people go there to become actors etc. OC is boring, it's where people go to raise families etc

Oh and the most boring city in OC is Irvine. I cannot stand that city. Yes, it's SUPER SAFE (like the #1 safest city in the country) and it's SUPER CLEAN and SUPER WELL PLANNED (it's a master planned community) but jesus is it boring there. Every single house there looks the same, like every street there looks the same, it's boring as hell. It's live driving through one of those scary cities from the movie "The Stepford Wives" or something .

Yes, there are freeways freakin everywhere, there's like 5 by my house. And yes there are tons of people (too many people). I meant like boonies compared to LA. I think I meant boonies like too suburban. It's not like a busy bustling city alive full of busy people going "somewhere". I feel like LA has more life. It's hard to explain.

Yes, I've been to Holland before, and yes the streets are very narrow there. I think it's probably impractical to drive there cause there is no parking. I know people who live there and they would rather take the tram and metro than drive. I really like Holland too but I can't live there though.

Holland is even MORE isolated than orange county! They don't sell certain brands there, for example MAC cosmetics only got there within the last few years while it was popular here for like many many years already.

If you think Orange County is too "small" and boring come to where I live. You'd probably kill yourself within 15 minutes of arriving. Going to wal-mart is the most exciting thing to do.

i live in LA and while I love it (we have the best clubs, food, girls (in US), blah blah blah) some of the shit like the traffic is really really annoying. oh and the high rise buildings are cool until you have an office on the 25th floor and it takes 5 minutes just to get outside or 10 minutes to get something from your car that is right under you. not to mention the $250/month parking spaces u need to spend having an office in one of this high rise buildings. same shit different pile

Sounds like New York is the right place for you. If you wanna stay in Cali, try San Francisco.

I don't like NY. I know it's even busier and more hectic than LA, but I like La because of the glamour aspect of it and I like Hollywood. In NY people are very ambitious and want to be successful but in LA I think more people want to be stars. I like that more.

Yes, I'd probably die if I went there

At least I have palm trees here and instead of Walmart there's big shopping centers with every store imaginable. I hate the people that shop at Walmart. Everyone there is rude and trashy.

Personally I love the boonies.

Ideally my next house and what I am looking at has land owned on 3 sides by the USFS that will remain undeveloped which happens to be about at least 500 to 2000 or more acres in each direction on average. Small personal drive way, inability to see town from my house. If by chance I go to the local town it can be counted in blocks and only a select few of those are comercial in nature.

I am tired of busy and high energy, though they did allow me to have what I want when I do move.

You can support any argument you want with numbers. Fact of the matter is that there is significant land mass in the OC, and yeah, parts of it is the boonies. It isn't Wheatfield, IN but relatively speaking, yeah it is the sticks in places.

Just because it has a big population and there are freeways everywhere doesn't mean it's not the boonies.

For example, the inland empire also has a big population
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inland_Empire_(California)

Population Ranked 14th in the U.S.
- Total CSA - 17,775,984 [1]

MSA - 4,026,135[2]

but I consider that the total boonies, it's out in the middle of nowhere and I would die if I live there. I'd MUCH rather live in OC than the Inland empire or San Bernardino County. Those areas are even more depressing. Like REALLY depressing. They are so far out there they can't even receive the popular Los Angeles radion stations like KIIS FM. I don't know how to explain it, it's just the total boonies, even though there is a large population, there's shopping centers and malls everywhere, freeways everywhere, they probably have plenty of nightclubs (but not cool ones like in LA) it's still considered "out there in the sticks". Yes, they are all big cities, but not "LA" type cities, but like boonie cities.

What city do you live in? I want to read about it on Wikipedia and compare populations with OC etc

I do agree OC is nowhere as bad as cities in the midwest etc like somewhere isolated and desolate like in Idaho or Kentucky where they have potato farms and cows, that's even more depressing. At least we have the beach here and more city-like and you can find anything everywhere, such as any type of restaurant and of course there is Disneyland etc but it's not AS city like as LA. I hold LA as the holy grail of "cityness".

Bausch, you're a somewhat strange person. Holland isn't isolated, it's just a different country with different needs, a different market (hence the lack of "MAC"), a different culture.

In fact, I bet people in LA, NYC or London are more isolated than they are in what you call "the boonies". People who are always going somewhere are isolated, take that as a rule of thumb.

I don't like this at all. It sounds scary. What if I get killed or something, who would hear if you're isolated like that? It's dangerous and scary. Small towns also have small selections of things. If you want anything good you're going to have to buy it on-line and what if you want to try something first before you buy it? It's going to be hard to do that in a small town.

I also hate small towns because everyone knows everyone.

No, I like Holland a lot. I just meant that some products that are popular in America take longer to arrive there. Everything is faster now but back in the 80's I remember living in Holland and we got tv shows that were at least a season behind from what was showing in America.

I know Holland is not isolated, but sometimes certain products/brands are not available there. It's probably because most Dutch people could care less about them but I know that SOME Dutch people do like those items because they are asking about it on-line on other forums and complaining how they can't buy this product or that product...

dude oc is so diverse and the economy is great, just look up the demographics of oc - a little of everything. education is huge here, you aren't in the boonies or near a small town in kentucky or idaho where the walmart is the main attraction.

not sure where in oc you are or who you socialize with but oc is really a top choice in the country for entertainment, to live, raise children in and pretty much is a very cool place. maybe if your not in downtown santa ana or the ghettos of anaheim in some horse barn.

I would not be to far from the city I am in now so not a whole lot would change. Yes my selections would be a little more limited but as you already expressed could be ordered online or I could make the not so small but less than an hour or so drive back to where I am at now. I however rarely try many things before I buy them as I typically am pretty sure of what I want before I even consider it.

The isolation is far from an issue for me. If something did happen the effects are about the same as if I was living in a city. Seen plenty of newstories where someone was dead and it took weeks or months for the body to be found in a major city. Also know you can often scream you head off and in many cities others just do not want to get involved. I find the level of help a bit better in smaller towns.

I will agree in most small towns most everyone does know most everything pretty quick as gosip travels fast. Though there happen to be plenty of skeletons in everyones closets that nobody still knows of. I have also seen many small towns where the entire town can keep quiet about matters. I suppose it just goes down to what you share or let out in your life.

No, I don't live in the ghetto at all. I think even the nicer parts of OC are boring. Like Newport beach for example, it's great for the summer to go to the beach there and there's SHITLOADS of money and very wealthy people there but it has too much of a "beach town" feeling to it. It's too laid back there. I get more of a city feel in Santa Monica, it's more city-like.

I like L.A because it seems more glamorous and I like the grittiness of it, even tho some parts of LA are ghetto I think it gives it more character. Irvine is SUPER SAFE and SUPER CLEAN and I cannot stand it because it looks like a city from a horror movie like Stepford Wives because everything is TOO perfect and TOO safe and TOO well-planned. It lacks character. It's suburban hell.

Why don't you tell us what city in OC you live in? You also sound a bit star struck as if you want to be in LA because there's the chance you might actually get to see someone famous. When I lived in OC, if my friends wanted to go to the clubs on Sunset, we would drive there and then drive home, you act as if LA is a few states over. Also, if you don't like OC that much and love LA, why not just move there, isn't much of difference in cost of living.

I'm in Huntington Beach... and love every minute of it...

You can't judge a city by it's tourist traps... Lame St. is horrible. Only reason we ever go near it is for a nice walk on the pier, or if friends are already planning a bar excursion starting there.

The city, and county both are quiet when you want them to be, but plenty going on if you know where to look.

My only problem with OC has been vacationing typically sucks... We go anywhere else, all we look forward to is coming back home to OC where it's nicer.

I spent like 6-7 years in Huntington Beach (on and off) and I hated it. I just really hate it. I don't know if it's because I had bad high school years there but I just hate it. After that I lived around Newport/Costa Mesa, the only thing I liked about that area was the beach and that was about it. Now I live in the South Coast Metro area, maybe 2 min away from South Coast Plaza. I live in a decent place (I pay almost 2k for 1 bedroom) and it's not ghetto, we have concierge here and free pilates/spinning classes, there are lots of yuppies in my building. There was an article in the OC register about the place I live in, they are doing a 50 million dollar renovation and it's going to be one of the more upscale places in OC because they are going head to head and competing against the Irvine Company.

I can't move to LA because I don't know anyone there and I'm afraid to move somewhere by myself where I don't know anyone.

To be honest I get kind of scared when driving so far. Yes, I drove to LA many times but I'm not the best driver and I tend to get lost up there, merging on the wrong freeways, I always end up missing the 110 or 10, I think, I get them mixed up, it's the one that's one the far left and you have to be on in the left lane from the 405 to merge in there (I always drive on the right because I drive slow on the freeway) and I end up missing it and getting lost. I get nervous when driving on the freeway for that long. I like driving slow in inside streets. People just zoom and speed on the freeway going 80mph plus and tailgate etc. It scares me.

I live a 711 Ocean, the condos west of the pier on the beach. It was great living there. I would walk to Main street at night and hit up all the bars and clubs. Lowest crime rate in California

Oh. I walk by there all the time!! (I probably walked by there 100 times). During the summer I used to walk on the "trail" there (you know what I mean), and it would pass all those condos all the way down.

Where is the link to the description/info to those condos? I am looking here http://www.calcoasthomes.com
but can't find it. How much is a condo there btw?

you've said a whole bunch of times you're anti-social and don't like to go to bars and clubs - so what difference does it matter whether the city you're in is exciting?

all you need is a place with a good mall, cable and internet and subscription to the National Enquirer to make you happy.

No I'm not telling you exactly where I live. I will say OC has half the population of my state. My county has less than 20,000 population in fact within a 50 miles radius( about 8000 sq miles ) of my town the popualtion within that circle would be under 300,000. I have to drive over 60 miles to get to a city with over 50,000 population. In fact there aren't any cities with a popualtion over 15,000 within 50 miles of me. Is that boonies enough for you?

I would go clubbing in LA. I like it in LA. Me and my ex went clubbing and eating out in LA all the time, I really liked it. We didn't go clubbing A LOT in LA (just a few times to see specific DJ's) but more like exploring and eating out, but I always had fun when I went there. I would totally go clubbing there.

No it's NOT the boonies. Try looking up what boonies means.
boonies refer to RURAL areas

Quote:
For example, the inland empire also has a big population
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inland_Empire_(California)

Population Ranked 14th in the U.S.
- Total CSA - 17,775,984 [1]

MSA - 4,026,135[2]
The fact that it's in a MSA which stands for METROPOLITAIN Statistical Area means it's not RURAL and therefor can not be BOONIES.

It might not be technically the boonies by definition but I bet that if you just ask random people in LA they would probably think any city in the Inland Empire, such as Victorville http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victorville,_California "in the middle of nowhere". Of course they have freeways connecting them to other counties etc but I meant figuratively speaking, it's considered "out there in buttfucking egypt)

Yea, I found some properties in Google, they are going for over a million now for 2 bedrooms (only 968 sq feet).

I was thinking the same thing, the more he describes himself and his likes and dislikes, it appears the real boonies is the perfect place for him. An anti social who has trouble navigating busy freeways and fast drivers, try Nebraska, not southern California.

Dude you live at the Pinnacle, of course you are going to run into Yuppies, by the way yuppies don't really like to live in the Boonies as you call it. I think the real issue is who you socialize with and the circles you run with
