I also hate small towns because everyone knows everyone.

I would not be to far from the city I am in now so not a whole lot would change. Yes my selections would be a little more limited but as you already expressed could be ordered online or I could make the not so small but less than an hour or so drive back to where I am at now. I however rarely try many things before I buy them as I typically am pretty sure of what I want before I even consider it.
The isolation is far from an issue for me. If something did happen the effects are about the same as if I was living in a city. Seen plenty of newstories where someone was dead and it took weeks or months for the body to be found in a major city. Also know you can often scream you head off and in many cities others just do not want to get involved. I find the level of help a bit better in smaller towns.
I will agree in most small towns most everyone does know most everything pretty quick as gosip travels fast. Though there happen to be plenty of skeletons in everyones closets that nobody still knows of. I have also seen many small towns where the entire town can keep quiet about matters. I suppose it just goes down to what you share or let out in your life.
