It amazes me these days. It was not but 12 to 15 years ago that I was doing all kinds of jobs. I worked at McDonalds, Taco Bell, I worked roadside construction, I worked in a Louisiana swamp, I mowed lawns....etc....

Don't take this wrong, but when was the last time you saw a non-immigrant doing these jobs?

I was watching this show, CBS or NBC I believe....they were focusing on this Colorado construction company that was relishing in a booming housing market. They said that if they couldn't take illegal immigrants, their business would collapse.

In other words, they said on national tv that if a raid were to occur (even though that isn't feasable due to a logistical nightmare on the government end of things) that the entire housing market would collapse, locally of course.

They said that they would be majorly shorthanded and those "citizens" available to work would want the moon, the sun and the stars for compensation.

The guy said 10 years ago, it was no prob to get some 17 or 18 year old to do the job. The summer I graduated highschool and the summers that bookmarked my college years were all spent with "labor" jobs, at least most were. It was a big deal. My friends and I all did it because we got paid higher hourly rates. Plus, we enjoyed being in the sun, keeping in shape, etc.

What happened?

I know I live in Los Angeles which makes the issue of immigration more of an "in my face" type deal, but really, I can't recall the last time I saw some white kid working on a construction site.

This isn't an anti-immigration thread, in fact, it is the opposite. If our people don't want the jobs, give them to someone else. When you hear that there are "no jobs available," one must take it with a grain of salt.

The definition of "job" has really changed for our youth and for our desperate.

Did the computer age kill it? Did illegals undercut the hourly rates? Did the onslaught of telemarketing jobs convince kids that AC and reclining chairs are the way to go?

I sure in the hell know it is not that illegals have undercut the wage standard. My fiance runs a landscaping company. She only uses legal status workers. She has a damn near impossible time finding Americans who will do the job. They just do not seem to want them, they do not want to be out working in the heat or cold, they do not want to put in long hours of hardwork.

More often than not it almost seems as if manual labor is beneath to many Americans under the age of thirty something.

By the way if anyone has been paying attention to California's citrus freeze issue, you will have noticed how even the Govenor wants to ensure even the illegals that there will be assistance for them as well. They really do not want them moving away and possibly not returning the following season.

Cory, you have to look harder if you want to see the white guys at a construction job...look for the guy snoozing/talking on the cellphone in the air conditioned white or orange truck. I agree with you but I think alot of the blame has to come from those jobs not being "cool" or respected amongst peers. I am often times reluctant to say in certain circles that I worked at McDonald's when I was 15. When I was younger, just having a job period meant that you were cool. Now we tend to categorize someone based on the job they have.

Actually they ARE doing raids chief.

My old college roommate is homeland security. They just did a sweep on SWIFT meats a month or two back. Arresting 6000 in one day.

He told me about all the boo fucking hoo's the town's people were saying. Mothers and kids yelling at them, and telling them to go back to England, etc.

Laughable.

The costs are not an issue, we offer health insurance, we pay social security tax, we pay workers comp. We pay wages on par and actually higher than union wages though unions can lick my ass during flu season.

I would have agreed 2 years ago, but I've tended to notice poor management uses issues like this to scapegoat for them running a poor company.

Perfect example is the american car companies. They can complain about wage hiking all they want, but really it was never a problem when they were actually selling cars (not to mention that if they'd done things correctly in the first place the unions wouldn't have aquired so much power).

Any time a major company goes bankrupt look at the lame duck excuses the people in charge tend to give. It's rather amusing that it's never THEIR fault.

WegCory, I have been there many of the same jobs you gave as what you used to do, so did i. When i finally got up on heavy equipment it was a dream job... had to work your way to that seat though.

when i got in factory work, same thing, had to work your way up to welder

believe it or not there are times when i very much miss those jobs i had back then, there was a certain feeling working outside all day..... of course i sit back in my comfortable chair, turn on the AC in the summer and sip a cool beverage of my choice and I get over the nostalgia heh heh

Americans want at least 2 times the money, with a 15 minute smoking break, a coffee break for another 15 mun and a one hour lunch, and then another smoking break, followed by another coffee break. And by law, the companies have to give them. So, now the the construction company is paying 4 times the amount to build a single home, you will be paying 6 or 8 times what it would have cost.

But dont worry asshat, thats not all that you will be paying more for. No way, now the price of strawberries has gone from 3 or 4 dollars a pint, to 12 or 14, because it is americans and thuer lazy asses picking them. And it dont stop there.

So keep thinking that way, and you will one day pay far more than you think.

Hell for that matter we tired to hire a guy to work 40 hours a week here in mexico. He is Mexican American. Has his citizenship, and needs money bad. We offered him 6$ an hour, free lunch, and work hours are flexable. as long as the work is done. Now this is in mexico, and the daily mininum wage is 5$ a DAY!

and guess what. His lazy american ass did not want the job. Plus he would be making extra money by submitting galleries every day for a 50/50 profit split with me. I make the gallery, and all he has to do is submit. he still said NO

while i will neither agree or disagree with your statement about the previous poster... your assertions about what American workers demand and get is so far removed from reality it is laughable. Dude I did those jobs and I worked a hell of a lot of hours with NO damned breaks and there certainly wasn't any government looking out for my well being and guaranteeing me breaks!! That's insane.

He says that the americans use the unions to get the breaks that they want, and push for more money, and they dont deserver it. He said that when they are behind on a deadline, he can always count on the immigrants to pick up the slack.

No offense about where you worked. And I dont know WHEN you did that either, but you and I BOTH know that the labor laws in the US are amazingly stupid in a lot of areas.

Very simply if you paid any attention to previous posts. She only hires legal workers. So it is no magic trick. Facts remain the same.

Every worker we have had that was under thirty four or so has been a lazy bitch or quit. I do not need to think the American work force ages eighteen to mid thirties are lazy, they fucking are. We still try out younger people but still results remain the same, all of the time.

no BS it has been awhile since i have slung dirt. but where i did it was in Virginia Beach and Jacksonville Florida. I always worked for smaller companies and have no idea what working for a big company was like but i know i burned up a lot of sweat getting paid nothing before i landed a factory job which was UAW and was exceedingly sweet. I'n not surprised that in a city like Miami or any really large metro area that it would be more expensive to hire legal workers by a long shot and they might even get those breaks and stuff you're talking about. But i never saw them LOL

Thats how it goes in some of them. Not all mind you, but most. the one that my friend works for, they all get paid well. they do high rise work, and he is making about 46 an hour as the foreman. his lowest paid guy is making 22 an hour. so not bad money, but the work sucks.

I worked for an pharmaceutical company for a few years, and it was amazing at how many employees they had, and how little got done. I know I did as little as I could, even though I was on contract.

Why work in the fields when you can have a nice easy job in an office?

When I was younger I worked for the phone company for dirrectory assitance. The company was Pacific Bell (then Southwest Bell and now it seems AT&T). My starting wages were $14/hour plus full benefits and all I needed to do was sit behind a desk, talk to people on the phone, and every now and then push a handful of buttons on a computer. A few years later I was making $70k a year at that same job. Why work in the fields doing real work when you can make $70k a year doing next to nothing?

Before the phone company I was working in fast food - for seven years!

When I was younger I worked for the phone company for dirrectory assitance. The company was Pacific Bell (then Southwest Bell and now it seems AT&T). My starting wages were $14/hour plus full benefits and all I needed to do was sit behind a desk, talk to people on the phone, and every now and then push a handful of buttons on a computer. A few years later I was making $70k a year at that same job. Why work in the fields doing real work when you can make $70k a year doing next to nothing?
