Why do you guys love so much popular brand name hardware?
Don't you first look at the specs of each item and if they equal buy the less expensive one?

I type this post from an Asus laptop.
Fuck popular computers, when they're all built on the same parts.

and as for the brand name hardware, whatever I need I find the best deal on the part that had the highest reviews...doesn't matter what brand as long as it has tons of good reviews
shit, i would have never trusted Lite-On if it hadn't been for all the good reviews....and Lite-On makes some of the best low priced parts in the world |

In the last week, there's been a thread by RRRED and Juicy asking for laptop 'puters and I've only seen "Dell, Toshiba, Sony, HP, yadda yadda" thrown around. That you know "Asus", I think, makes you part of the minority. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Lite-On is a rock solid company. My second burner was a Lite-On and I've had many since. When Sony gave up their dvd burner manufacturing, Lite-On took it over and now make all their components. Kick ass company.

hmm i don't know about that.. i'd think most people here would know Asus.. i use Asus GPU's and MOBO's and the laptop the local computer store here was going to resell me last week was an Asus laptop. Amongst everyday people who only see dell on tv or whatever sure.. but most people here would know them they're so prevalent. |

I just threw "asus" as an example. Mention "sager" and most alienware / falcon nw people will have no idea their 'puters come from the same standard parts. Oh well. I was just trying to mention how I dig my generic, even if I'm wrong about where it comes from.

For example, you could be buying a new CD-Rom drive, You could buy a cheap CD-Rom drive from a brand you're not familiar or you could buy one from for example, LG for 10 bucks more. What do I personally know about the cheap brand I'm not familiar with? Nothing. What do I know about LG? I've used their equipment in the past and never had any problems, I know they make a lot of money every year. They could both come with two year warranties, so why not just pay $10 less? Because the LG is less likely to fuck up while it's under warranty and even if it does, LG are a big company and are far more likely to replace my broken CD-Rom drive with a brand spanking new one. It's about trust, and saving time. I'd rather pay more money for something I know is good, than something that I don't know is not.

I personally like and buy a lot of Sony products. I also buy all Dell. I have been happy with my experiences with both companies so I tend to look for those products. Do you go to the trashy titty bar because they have cheaper dances or the nice titty bar because you like they're girls? This is one of your few threads that has nothing to do with strippers, it didn't feel the same.

I've been around computers all my life and hadn't really heard much about generic computer brands (Asus / Sager, others) until last summer. Even on this board, find a thread where someone is asking about laptops / desktops and find a post where someone mentions a generic brand; if any, they're few of them.

What I want is compatibility. Since there is no real industry standard for PC, I've researched those parts that work together synergistically, giving me the best performance.

asus is huge, only reason they are not as popular is they specialized in parts more and only recently full comps.

Yes, Asus is nice. I had used their MOBO's in past 3 computers I built over past 5-6 years. The most recent one, I made a change to DFI and picked up their LanParty. Not too shabby. Although it's mainly (from reviews) used for gamers, and people who love to overclock.
I generally do not overclock my machines, even though all of them have good multiple, or dual fans in the casing. I haven't had time to game on it, but the MOBO, and Athlon 64 chip are blazing compared to other machines I work on. I can't say much for their support. I had a problem in the beginning, and they will not talk to you until you until you had over a certain wattage PS. Some of their MOBO's require a bigger supply than comes in your case. What I love most although not a problem for me because I have multiple PC's is when you are having a problem, you refer to a manual, and they tell you to go check online. I can only imagine the annoyance for someone with only ONE pc. |

Because most people prefer to buy a 'package' something that is guaranteed (to a certain extent) to work. When it comes to computers I'll check for the best bang for your buck product, but when it comes to say something like cars. I'll just buy the package/severly overpay because I don't have a clue. Same for most industries... now how to apply this to porn.

Depends on the use of the product. Do you want to spend $500 on a production server only to have it drop dead on you a year down the road?
Its different with powertools and stuff. If you can get a no-name drill for $25 for general use rather than spending $125 on the Makita, you will get your value out of it long before it dies. A Carpenter wouldn't. I try and buy off-brand as much as possible when I know its not going to make a difference.

So many electronics are the same inside. I tend to buy the cheapest thing I can find. I have almost never been burned doing this. I have owned low end compaq and tons of names no one has ever heard of since. They all worked. I have used AMD chips forever do to cost. Even when doing some big processing stuff, we have never had an issue.
I am not sure I even equate Dell or Sony with quality. They have to be so price competitive that you know they are cutting corners to get there. |
