Depends on the use of the product. Do you want to spend $500 on a production server only to have it drop dead on you a year down the road?
Its different with powertools and stuff. If you can get a no-name drill for $25 for general use rather than spending $125 on the Makita, you will get your value out of it long before it dies. A Carpenter wouldn't.
I try and buy off-brand as much as possible when I know its not going to make a difference.
