:mad Mentally Handicap Beats My Puppy With His Cane

So there is this mentally challenged guy that lives in my building by himself. I was down in P1 parking lot loading my car with a bin. I had my 4 month old puppy on his leash but roaming free. This guy comes out and my dog approaches him and starts to smell him. The guy decides to smoke my dog with his fucking cane in the head. I wanted to knock this guy out but held back of course because of his condition. My question is what should I do now? Should I report him or just leave it be?

On a side note this guy has also been in the elevator a few times coming up from the gym with his privates hanging out from his robe. He is obviously not all there but lives by himself so he can't be that bad.

tough situation man, i don't care if he was SOMEWHAT handicapped, if he smoked my dog in the head with a cane i would have punched him out...

if he is ALRIGHT enough to not need 24 hour supervision from a care taker, he should have the mental capacity to know if its okay to hit an animal for nothing or not....

If he was roaming free, then it would be your fault. Believe it or not, many people either are morbidly afraid of dogs or just do not want to be bitten. If the dog was invading his personal space and you DID NOT CONTROL the dog, then why blame the other person. It was your responsibility. I feel bad for the dog and would be pissed off too but

Just playing devil's advocate.

Actually, it does. Mental disabilities can cause people to have less self control, less feeling of what's appropriate for specific social situations, stronger reactions to events, etc. Locking them up for having a mental disability would, in many cases, be both extremely cruel and prohibitively expensive, so we just have to accept their limitations and try to find some understanding for them.

It's pretty clear from this thread that most people here have never spent any significant amount of time with mentally disabled people

It's also pretty clear that a) either you don't have a dog, b) you're dog has never been beaten up by somebody else or c) both

When someone starts injuring house pets, it's time to stop trying to understand them and instead keep the pets safe

bottom line
if you're dog was on his leash UNDER YOUR CONTROL that would never have happened.

it's part of being a responsible pet owner.

Nowhere did he say the dog was injured.

Furthermore, all you pet-loving hypocrits who eat a few dozen animals a year yet care more about the welfare of a dog than that of a mentally disabled man make me sick.

Don't let your dog sniff other people, including children. Let them approach you if they want to see the dog. More people than you think are deathly terrified of dogs, even small ones.

Report him where ? If the dog was roaming free and invading this person's private space, he will not get even a slap in the wrist from any authority at all.

On the other hand hitting a person with a mental disabilty may send you to jail.

If the dog approached the NON-HANDICAPPED guy, the guy legally has every right to defend himself against the dog. Some people are THAT AFRAID of dogs and that's why there are LEASH LAWS where the owner has to be in control of the dog.

If the guy approached the dog and smacked him, m.akingcoin has every right to defend the dog which includes knocking the guy out.

exactly .. if he lives by him self ..he's well enough to get a beating also ... however that it's too late for that so I'd file a report ... if he continues to do shit like that it will be good to have past behavior on file ...

Basically it was your fault to let the puppy roam, and I would be pissed, but would not report him (even if he was not mentally challenged) unless leash laws are nil where you live.

Threaten him a little and make him think you are more crazy than him.

How about getting up close in the elevator and whispering in his ear.
"You seem like a lucky guy. FUCK with MY dog again and if you are indeed lucky, you will wake up in the hospital... Are you feeling lucky?"

Tough call man..I would think the mentally challenged person could view that as a potential risk.He was trying to protect himself..sounds fucked up but there really isn't much you can do as the cops would probably ignore it

Hopefully his dog wasn't injured from the attack, but it certainly sounds like it could have done some damage.

All I'm saying is that if there's somebody running around with his balls hanging out of his shorts beating dogs with canes because it got near him, somebody should probably look into the situation. The guy sounds dangerous. Maybe he's not retarded, making the guy's a drunk or a junkie or something. Maybe next time it'll be somebody's little kid that gets too close to him and sets him off.

When people start attacking defenseless creatures, animal or human, I don't think ignoring it is the best idea.

Fuck that, here's what I'd do.

It's gotta be easy to whack a mentally retarded guy and cover it up. He could mysteriously die in a fire, or drown to death in his bath tub. Heck, he could even accidentally poison himself in a tragic cooking accident. People that abuse animals don't know how to share the earth.

"Mentally handicapped" is a very offensive term. The proper terminology is "retard".

No. The world shouldn't have to "adjust" to accommodate one person. That one person needs to adjust to the world.

Though I think what this particular person did was wrong and he should be held accountable somehow (I have no idea how), I always find it extremely fascinating how pet owners consider pets to be the "end all" and so many are quick to lock up this guy and throw away the key. I'm not excusing this guy at all, but until you spend a little time with the "mentally challenged", you will never have any idea how these people think.

I like dogs. When I was a kid a puppy bite me that required stitches in my knee. The doctor reported it and the owners did not have documentation of the puppy's rabbi (sp) shot. The puppy was going to be put down over the doctor's report, but we all agreed to let the puppy stay at our local vet for two weeks.

I believe the owners of the puppy were sited over leash laws and their home owner insurance had to pay my medical bills. My parents just took me to the doctors and were not blaming anyone.

Some people are afraid of dogs, other are not but it is the owners responsibility to make sure that their dog is in full control among the public and in common areas where you live.

And I've seen about 4 cases where puppies have either bitten someone or have dug their claws into someone's leg and caused them to get stitched up.

Bottom line is that the dog should have been under control via a leash

I think the best solution here Coin is for you to sleep with the mentally handicap guy and have your dog lick peanut butter off both your balls...

Ok is that a little over the top or no?

DH

P.S. In all seriousness I would have beat Corky down. ;)

The dog was leashed and under control, just because he is roaming doesnt mean I don't have control. I call him back he comes. Smelling a guys leg should not result in a cane across the skull. 'Shakes' was simply smelling the guys leg. Bottom line is the guy should not have smoked my dog in the head with his cane.

I have been bitten by a puppy before and recieved stiches in my brow. I am not about to go punting dogs across the road because they come up to me. If a dogs attacks me of course I will defend myself, but beating a dog for no reason is uncalled for and cruel.

I also have an uncle thats mentally challenged and has been living in a care home for 20 years now. One of the reasons I didn't knock him the fuck out.

We agree to disagree.

IMO and probably the law's as well, if you're not holding the leash then he is not under your direct control.

The retard should not have kicked your dog but maybe he perceived danger. You have to admit that everyone has a different level of comfort. Some people are sincerely morbidly afraid of dogs or germs

Besides, don't you think it's kind of rude to let your dog lick/sniff/explore strangers? I personally do not want to be licked and even when I give the "leave me alone" face, dog owners still are clueless. Their usual response is "don't worry, he's harmless" and my silent response is "I don't fucken care, now get the dog out of my personal space" but then again, I'm not rude enough to say that

PS: IMHO, I would've at the very least pushed the guy after he hit my dog.

No I don't find it rude for a 4 month old puppy to explore and smell people.

Do you think it's ok for someone to hit my dog in the head with it's cane because he smelt his leg?

Let me rephrase it. Could you understand how some people do not want their personal space invaded by other people's pets and may find it rude?

PS: kosta and many many other people find that it's rude so you should definately keep the dog away from people. It is in fact rude.

Yes and no.

No it is not okay if it is merely sniffing but it should not be there in the first place.

Yes it is okay if the person felt in danger... but then again, only that person would know - not your nor I.

If you let your dog go over and sniff people you have to expect it to be hit or kicked. Once or twice when my dogs have been off the leash they've wanted to "play" with kids that have suddenly turned up after i've started walking on an empty beach and i've had to make a mad dash after them to keep them away from the kids in case dad takes a boot to the puppy (puppies can be quite large) thats jumping on his little princess. It would be totally my fault and his right to disable the dog in any way he saw fit and i wouldn't complain. It would suck but it's not his fault - it would have been mine.

Personally In most cases I would definately keep someone's dog away from me with my foot or a cane if i had one, I've been bitten before and I can't vouch for how some other retard treats and trains his dog and at the very least i don't want their shit eating mutt to put dirt all over my pants.. NO ONE should have to put up with being accosted by an animal in a public space even if it just wants to sniff and lick.. What would YOU do if a MAN came over to you and sniffed and licked you? Same shit.. violation of personal space and right to be left the fuck alone animal or no.
Just because someone doesn't mind letting their dogs kiss them on the lips and eat off dinner plates doesn't mean everyone wants to cuddle your ball-licking fur sack.

Basically it's your fault for not controlling the dog. Some people have real issues with animals and it's your responsibility to your pet to make sure they are not exposed to them and potential harm and responsibility that the public isn't exposed to your pet and potential harm.

A simple, "Can you get your dog off of me" or "I am uncomfortable with your dog" would have worked just fine. If a dog attacks you I understand defending but kicking a harmless puppy is uncalled for.

Of course... but a large section of the population are total fuckups.. you shouldn't let your dog approach them just for it's own safety.. if you can't drive without someone with road rage beating you with a wrench, how can you expect everyone to put up with being licked by a dog. And the inverse is also true, how can I trust someone to have trained their dog properly with the amount of fucktards out there. I never let my dogs sniff of lick people even on relaitvely narrow walkways I always yank them away to give ample space.
