Don't you think we're boring?
Porn marketing has gotten completely boring and pretty ineffective for the most part.
Some players hit the mark. Lensman's parties are excellent, for example. You can't go wrong with what Amateur Money does. Give people what they REALLY want. That's proven. Some thoughts on Gonzo Marketing .. http://www.opranoplus.com/askcolin/ Your thoughts? How do sponsors reach out in new and creative ways? Or do you think the same old tired ways are good enough? ------------------ TGP2 Bucks. $1/email. No deductions! The Neon Jungle! |

Reading your piece... you make several comments to the effect ... that adult companies aren't marketing their programs convincingly or effectively. I don't think you give the industry enough credit. Sure there is more to be done - and you're trying something new - which of course I'll back innovation - that's awesome. My point is that if you pick up AVNOnline...and thumb thru the archives ...notice the progression and evolution of the ads. It's actually quite impressive. To think, most of our companies are run by people who are self taught, self made millionaires. Typically they saw an opportunity, a few saw a need, and they moved on it. They knew nothing about staffing or marketing ... and less about the internet ... and over the years the knowledge they have learned truelly does show thru in the marketing efforts both b2b and b2c. |

now to commment specifically on gonzo marketing ...
I get a vague sense of what you are trying to do. by all means, correct me if I missed it. basically you want to promote a program... like CEN ... by promoting a lifestyle. You should sign up for this program because, we party hard with george clooney, own $6,000,000 homes, and sleep with J Lo. But, really, I don't give a fuck. Because we're not bank rolled by VC...we've had to do this on our own... the bottomline is very serious business... we don't take it lightly. It's about money. When companies have a shit load of it ... they might start to get a little cocky... but most companies are financially very conservative - as well they should be. Cash is King - Keeping a handle on it is critical. My point is just... that I might sign up and test a program that I hear about thru a catchy ad/marketing campaign...but it's just a test ... and I'm going to stick with the one that is the most profitable...not the most glamorous. the last thing is that ... while there may be merit in a man gambling with 40,000$ (suggesting his program makes him a lot of money...I could probably make money with it too). It also has negative connotations... 1) he is getting too much off of my traffic...and should share more of the profits with me. 2) if he risks that kind of money at a casino..what's he doing with his business? Should I invest any time/effort/resources into that company? unfortunately... perception is reality. Exagerating reality... may create an uninteded reputation that kills your brand...and jeopardizes your business. |

Brett,
Maybe I'm not giving the industry enough credit. I agree with you that "most of our companies are run by people who are self taught, self made millionaires." I definitely do see increased knowledge of traditional marketing tactics as the industry has grown. What disappoints me is the lack of novelty, GIVEN OUR PROFESSION, of marketing vehicles. It's not that they aren't effective or convincing but rather that I think whole new levels of effectiveness are possible with uniqueness. We are PORNOGRAPHERS. We have so much more latitude in our marketing strategies available to us than we currently see. I have Nov. 2001 issue of AVN in front of me. If you have a copy, maybe you could point out some good examples to me of novelty? ------------------ TGP2 Bucks. $1/email. No deductions! The Neon Jungle! |

Brett,
Essentially, yes. As free site webmasters, we all test various sponsors and stick with what works for us. One goal of ours, as sponsors is, how do we get webmasters to test OUR sites? I have no doubt that CEN's marketing of a lifestyle has been very effective. Porn is, to many, a lifestyle. So of course IDENTIFICATION with a lifestyle or company can be an effective marketing tool. In mainstream, companies spend all kinds of money trying to get certain segments to identify with their product (Pepsi=young). Bill Gates spent a LOT of money on his house and everyone knows it. I don't see anyone saying he makes too much money to buy Microsoft product (Well, ok, some do). ------------------ TGP2 Bucks. $1/email. No deductions! The Neon Jungle! |

I pretty much feel that the adult programs pretty much wait for our office to come up with good ideas, then just copy them.
Lately, I've been caught in the sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament, causing a general slowdown in ideas across the net. I'll start thinking of something new this week and see if I come up with something to help us all out. maybe if I paid more attention to dialers. There is something there, I just can't see it yet. ![]() |

re: novelty. novelty is attention-getting. However, the implication is to be constantly changing which has its own downside (lower comprehension and retention). Marketers strive for a balance, making changes to keep things fresh but not discarding all that has been developed through past interactions with consumers. Now to the Evolution. Aug 99, AVNOnline, page 2, KNB's Ad. cluttered and kind of trashy. the message barely gets thru. page 11, page 13, page 14, 15, page 31, 37, 40,41 46,47, 53.... by 2001 - about the half of the ads...have a little more thought behind them. Klixxx july, 2001 - inside cover, holio.net, pages 40-41 ARS, but page 43 is back to the same ol' Retardo Ads... moving over to avn july 2001 44/45 pornication, 121 topbucks, 140/141 Sexcounter, 150 nationalnet, 155 hustler, 157 ynot still some bad ads... like 123, 126/127 The most recent i have Jan 2002, avnonline, 46 Helmy, 63 helmy again, 106/107 ARS, 109 XXXPressToys.com, 121 Gamma, 141 XXXWebhosting, 147 VideoParty, 155 EmpireStats, 258 NetBilling and 259 PornKings |

Boring? Novelty? What are you asking for Colin? The "Pet Rock" of the adult business?
Well I understand where you are coming from to an extent. But, as a ?PORNOGRAPHER? I could give a rat?s ass about glamour, and nice cars, or even a sponsor giving someone 20k to get high. I would join if the sponsor spent that 20k to improve there internal up sales, more exclusive content, increasing payouts or something that would help ME out in the long run. Trying convincing a Webmaster that ?this could be you? bullshit doesn?t work in my world, maybe in yours. But hey in my world I recognize marketing as that, and an overabundance of BS doesn?t encourage me to jump either direction. Now maybe I'm to old-fashioned, or I?m the odd duck, either way I think honesty, and solid product sell more that the coke filled make-up you put on it. |

I agree 100% it's about image. But what should that message be? PaySites are such easy prey... let's stick with them for a bit. Let's say that this pay site has the image of beind wild and crazy and you find out that 70% of your webmasters are Rock fans. Given the chance to do 1 of 2 things - party with a famous rock band and take pics/vids of your girls going crazy with the rockers at a blush California Home OR getting the same ultra famous band to sign the checks for that week and sign their latest CD for 300 of your webmasters. What would you do? |

R3K .. I'm not saying everyone needs to push the image of "glamour and nice cars". Shit, be yourself. I like expensive clothes. I like to party. I drive a Porsche. I am being myself. This is me.
No one marketing idea can appeal to everyone. There will always be someone that says "doesn't work on me". I don't want to say specifically what our next Gonzo idea is, because I want to be first to market, but I will demonstrate at a future show. |

I've always considered money spent on image as money wasted.
![]() Don't get me wrong, I love the parties, but would WMs NOT use your program if you DIDN"T spend money? The answer is no. If you have a good product, image means nothing. |

Brett,
It's an interesting choice. I don't know which would be more effective. For the specific choice you mentioned, reaching only 300 of our webmasters would be too small a percentage. Of course, reaching THE CORRECT 300 webmasters might be really valuable. I'm adding a line in the webmaster database right now, "Likes Kid Rock"! ------------------ TGP2 Bucks. $1/email. colin -
everybody would get the signed check. select webmasters would get the CD - you could distribute them anyway you'd want... but i'd do it in a promotional way... 200 webmasters with the most personal sales for the week of Feb 1- Feb 8 get one. and 100 webmasters with the most referred webmaster sales for the same week also get one. =) (this board is addictive) be back in a bit |

Oh Colin I enjoy nice cars and a bit of glamour also. But this type of advertising seems like your holding someone down and feeding them shit. Err, maybe that?s a bit crude, well your saying I like nice cars and I like to spend allot of money so if I show this to a webmaster he knows I'm the shit
![]() There is a level for things and a happy medium. You market a pet rock bro, and at the same time ill come out with a solid program, within 4 months your ?novelty? will wear off and ill be racing helicopters against lightspeed ;-) Hells take them for example, solid company, great business model, excellent support and real people, and there is a hell of a lot of webmasters out there making solid bank with them. That?s marketing. |

R3K. We've built a solid program for the past 5 years. Nothing can replace a solid program. I can't disagree with you there. A solid program is better than anything else.
What goal is unobtainable? If this business should teach us anything, it's that rags to riches can happen FAST! Brett, I LOVE promotions! Eraser Cash was a FANTASTIC example of how one can take the industry by storm. Everyone should learn from it. I think promotions are extremely under-utilized still in our business. ------------------ TGP2 Bucks. $1/email. No deductions! The Neon Jungle! |

It works! I'm going to go get a new digital camera and find the closest flea market. I broke the last one at the show. They still sell baseball cards? (My first business. I sold baseball cards at the flea market when i was 14. Weekly income. $100. Until we started selling candy, then it jumped up to $150. Add ons. ![]() ------------------ TGP2 Bucks. $1/email. I'm a free site webmaster, your targeted audience, the guy that you have to sell your program to (since I don't have my own program). What do I want? conversions, more money in my pocket, sincerely, I'm glad that you all go to Vegas and have a blast, but, it's almost impossible that I can make it there, and even if I could , it would be almost useless to me (except for the parties) so, what good does it make to me, being a realist, knowing that you spend thousands in your 'playa' parties? that you live the porn lifestyle? Kittykat was right in that you are pornographers (old post) and we are pornsters, the difference is painstakingly obvious, and that's what you'd keep in mind when designing your sponsor program. How do I select my sponsors? I have a definite set of rules of what works for me, if a sponsor falls within that category, I'll give them a try, if they convert well, and send me the money on time, I'll keep using them until their sign ups go down... That's what I want, and most of the people I know that doesn't have a program wants too. As to fresh ideas, I have quite a few of those every damn day of my life, and I'm sure many people has them, some are even geared towards certain people (being the only ones that I think would be able to carry them out with success) I'm sure that there are hundred's of those around, but the financial support that's needed to carry them out, doesn't grow on trees, so it's just a matter of time until the guy with the idea either contacts someone with the money or gets enough cash to make it on their own. hope my random rant helps your cause ![]() |

I don't have anything intelligent to say
![]() Colin, you are a porn scholar. What a strange combination. I like the lifestyle, the cars, the food, the booze etc. I go to Vegas to meet people and very often that leads to doing business with them which in turn helps support my lifestyle and theirs. It's also a welcome break from the grind. Shianna and I put in anywhere from 8 to 16 hours a day in front of these one eyed monsters and it's great to get out of dodge for a time, even if it's under the guise of doing business. I don't primarily pick sponsors for the flash they promise, nor do I intend people to promote my upcoming programs for that reason. I work with sponsors who work with me to help me understand and sell their product. I like to work with people who are fair and pay their bills on time. If you have a good site with strong retention and understand what your members want then I want to work with you. Let me sell it and you pay me so I can afford my fancy house and car...don't promise it to me, show me how your program will allow me to achieve those goals. |
