half hour sounds right to me..

we usually deep fry about 5 turkeys each thanksgiving, (were not fat, we just have a biiig family) .. you've never experienced thanksgiving until you've had a louisiana redneck deep fried turkey..

that's about all my redneck uncles are good for... cooking

Fried turkey isn't any worse for you than baked turkey, if you use a good light vegetable oil.
"tasty" is a bit of an understatement as well.
Last year our 22 pounder took about 70 mins, but I started it a bit too early.
My Mom got me hooked on that shit, she started frying her Thanksgiving turkeys about 6 years ago, and when I moved away, Thanksgiving wasn't the same without a fried turkey

The oil is only on the outside of the turkey anyhow... so it isn't even as bad as a big mac. ;-)

I wanted to get the hubby a cooker this year and he didn't want anything to do with it. lol We have a Kroger's special dinner... heat and eat.

Man I have deep fried mine for the last 3 years and I will never go back to the old way there is no comparing the 2 as far as taste and moistness (if thats a word). I go between 2 1/2 to 3 minutes per pound. but do remember not to add too much oil (good point rj)cause when it flows over the pot and and hits that fire youre looking at a backyard bomb.

Just Be Carefull:

We had 3 homes in the midwest catch on fire last year due to those turkey fryers Exploding!

Tip : Do not use a frozen turkey in the fryer,. that was the main cause of explosions.

Also keep that fryer Far from your property!

Have a Hose Near by! to extinguish all flames...

Hope that helps.....

Hahaha! Have you ever thrown a piece of ice in a deep fryer? What kind of IDIOT would put an entire frozen TURKEY in one?

Deep frying may cause health problems.

Try turbo broiling the turkey. If you get a large enough unit, the turkey would fit and you would not have any cholesterol issues to worry about.

We are doing ours that way also this year. We have not done it before, but have heard great things. Most of the time we do them on a smoker, but that takes a long time. Usually 16 hours. And you have to stay with it the entire time. And you smell like smoke when you are finished, but DAMN what a taste!!!

Deep fried turkey's are awesome. My family's been doing it for about 10 years. An awesome flavor enhancer is to inject the meat with marinade before deep frying. (There are special injectors for this purpose, that look like huge syringes).

10lbs is about all you want...any bigger and it doesn't cook properly. Half hour is about right.

another option that alot of people are doing here is the Imu kalua turkey... cooked in the ground like the kalua pig.

I bet that's delicious as hell, but prolly takes all damn day just like the pig.

Dousing a grease/oil fire with water is the absolute worst thing you can do. A can of Haylon is much safer....and won't make a mess like CO2

I have deep-pitted a turkey and it comes out tasting really good. The meat stays really juicy and just falls of the bone. But it don't look to good at the center of the dinner table cuz the meat just falls apart.

Holy shit. Can't believe this is the first thread I see.

I've been getting everything set up, all evening. Got my turkey washed and already injected some marinade to set overnight. Measured my water to see how much oil I would need. Got everything set up outside and ready to go. Then it happened.

Dropped a 3 gallon jug of peanut oil on my kitchen floor, knocked a hole in the side of it, it spilled everywhere, and I then proceeded to cuss anything and everything in the house. What a nightmare of a mess.

I even had to throw some clothes back on and go to the grocery store and get more oil. I *thought* $10 a gallon was expensive at Sam's. It was more than that at the market.

I do 3 1/2 mins per pound, btw. And I use a 14-15 lb turkey, and it's always delicious.

Couple of questions:

1). Can you drop a turkey in frozen or do you have to thaw it first? (When I worked at KFC many many many moons as a teenager we dropped frozen chicken in the deep fryer is why I ask).

2). Is fried turkey still good for having turkey and mayo sandwhiches?

It's a big plastic syringe. It came with my fryer, but I think you can buy them anywhere. I inject it just under the skin in a few places. If you want your marinade flavor to be stronger, then also inject it straight into the turkey at each spot you put it under the skin. Turn the syringe and shoot it into the turkey in four or five different directions.

If you want your marinade flavor to be stronger, then also inject it straight into the turkey at each spot you put it under the skin. Turn the syringe and shoot it into the turkey in four or five different directions.

i'm sorry i meant to say what did you use for your marinade

Definitely. The flavor is better, but peanut oil has one of the highest smoke points, so you can keep the oil hot enough to fully cook the turkey. And for whoever was asking- NO you can't put it in frozen! It has to be completely thawed. And fried turkey is even better on sandwiches, to me. The meat will melt in your mouth, it's so juicy and tender.

Home Depot sells peanut oil in the big boxes too. Probably any home center that sells the cooker would have the oil and gear to work on it with.
