Hm, I would say realistically it would be 20 men on one end vs the tree because the tree has no give. Even if the ten men on each side are of equal strength, they will lose footing, sway back and forth, etc.

I can also think of reasons it could go the other way, too, because of the amount of rope exposed to force. I doubt either of these are the answer you are looking for, though :)

Edit: I see we settled on "c". I guess we were assuming there were no variables such as give or the amount of rope used.

Correct - specifically ill-gotten gains . It's one word I will die if I ever use over here :)

freeadultcontent 08-13-2003 08:31 PM

Which number is next in this series.

10,4,3,11,15 ...?

14,
1,
17,
12,
None of the above.
and why, unless your answer is non of the above.

I will try to alert you if there is odd variable. Generally assume there is non. Most are just based on the words (if I spell the correctly)

To be honest I guessed - figured I had a 1 in 3 chance of being right :)

John3 08-13-2003 08:37 PM

then you wrote the question wrong.

10 pulling one way versus 10 pulling the other way would break a rope much faster than TEN pulling against a tree

Whoa, I didn't notice that. I thought it was 20 either way.

Without variables like said above, if they have equal stregth it would be the same.

completetosser 08-13-2003 08:42 PM

This is beginning to remind me of the old Monty Python 'is this the room for an argument' sketch

might want to check your physics :winkwink: :glugglug

freeadultcontent 08-13-2003 08:43 PM

I rechecked the question. Did not see error in it.

if 20 men pull on the rope (10 on each end), the stress on the rope will be no greater than if 10 pulled from one end and the other was tied to the tree. The tension on a rope is no greater than the pull at one of its ends.

Oh yes... Sainsbury's just sold out of the Monty Python DVD box set, was dying to get hold of it :)

Which was the cheddar sketch?

Ok no answer for that question.

Correct answer was a. 14
Why: when spelled out, each number in the series is longer than the previous number by one letter.

Two of the fastest horsemen in the kingdom proposed to the king's daughter. The king did not like either suitor, but wanted to look fair so he suggested a horse race in which the winner would have his daughters hand. The only catch was that the winner would be the person whose horse came in second. The kind was certain the race would never take place because he felt that neither horseman would let the other win. Finally, the king's daughter made a suggestion to the two horsemen that would guarentee a fair race. What did she suggest?

It was a pretty old one (I'm 49 and I was probably at grammar school at the time) set in a cheese shop. Cleese wanted to buy some cheddar and they didn't have any. Cleese said 'it's the single most popular cheese in the land' and Eric Idol (I think) said 'not in this manor squire'

freeadultcontent 08-13-2003 09:06 PM

The Monty python ones reminded me of that one.

Free sex to the one who came in second...he might be the loser but the other one won't get laid....sounds fair! :Graucho

The cheese shop guys say "We haven't much call for it around here." That routine is one of my favorites, right up there with "Michalangelo and the Pope" (but you need to see the one with Eric Idle as Michaelangelo and John Cleese as the Pope).

She suggested that each man ride the other man's horse.
