I use melons, berries, bananas with black cherry juice and some ice cubes then put the blender in the dishwasher. Buy a new $20.00 one every year or so. Works great. I have 2 big buck hard to clean juicers with a bunch of attachments buried in the pantry.

Juicers are good but they take out all the fiber. I prefer making smoothies w/fruits & veggies using a blender. Using a blender will allow you to keep all the fiber. Fiber is good for you. I think VitaMix makes the best high-powered blenders although cheaper models will work fine.

My breakfast this morning, 32oz. of goodness. Kale, banana and blueberry.

My girl informed me a few weeks back that she ordered a $500 Vitamix blender.

I was pissed because she veto'd the bigger TV when we bought a new one the week before.

Here we are two weeks later and I'm using the fucker 2-3 times a day and love it. I have been buying a TON of fruit and veggies at the public market, freezing most of the fruit. I eat a lot of shitty food or not much at all. I feel much better just including this in my daily regimen of shit ass food I'm trying to cut out.

Not even in the same league as something from Vitamix or Blendtec. That was the one I figured was a suitable alternative, but they don't even come close.

That Vitamix will turn frozen fruit into liquid. It's nuts.

I'm also looking into getting into juicing but don't want to drop $300+ on a good juicer then watch it sit on the counter unused. There is a good film called "Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead" that was on Hulu about a guy who juiced for several months straight, it will motivate you to buy a juicer after seeing his results.

I looked at some reviews comparing the two...

Ninja is good, especially if you don't want to spend so much money -- but the Vitamix is in its own class from every aspect.

No. But I really had no say in the matter. Her friend who recommended the Vitamix had burnt through 2 Ninja XL models in less than 2 years. The first replacement was covered by warranty but the second replacement wasn't, so she went with the Vitamix.

I've held the Ninja in my hands at the store. It's definitely not built the same way as the Vitamix. The Vitamix has almost twice the power and the length of the full warranty is 7 years.

I'm sure it does a good job. The key for me is, will it hold up. Reviews and experience of friend seemed to suggest otherwise.

That one he posted is my kids favorite. The kale has a flavor that is usually noticeable. In the case, the bananas are the overpowering flavor in the mix.

What Dean said. Fruit without the fiber is just sugar water and not good for you.

use frozen vegetables. Supposedly holds the nutrients better for storage.

---and bananas will help neutralize the greens taste. I also add a scoop of Garden of Life Superfood, which has chlorella and spirulina.

With fruit, a nice 50/50 mix of frozen and fresh is quite nice.

Without the fiber stripped away your body has to go through the process of digesting which not only slows down the absorption of nutrients (4-5 hours) but it also takes other nutrients and energy from your body to digest. The most efficient way to nourish the body is through pure juice which is completely digested within 10-15 minutes.

True, you're getting a handful of micronutrients, but you're also pounding your liver with fructose. You might as well do a couple tequila shots.

It tastes great. The bananas & blueberries overpower most of the green taste. You can also throw some mango in there, pineapple, or any other kind of fruit. The sky is the limit when it comes to this kinda thing. Youtube has thousands of "green smoothie" videos so check there for inspiration. This is a nice replacement for breakfast : )

Yes if you're juicing fruit (or carrots or beets) that is certainly true and if you want fruits probably blending is better. I personally juice only green vegetables and drink at least a quart of it a day, since I started this a few months ago I cant even describe how much better I feel, its like night and day.

You can always start with one of those $49.00 junkers, and if you find you like blending and juicing, you upgrade accordingly. That is what I did. I started with a $99.00 deal, and worked up from there.

I have never been a fan of juice, or smoothies, so I honestly just did not think I would stick with it. After a few months, I found I feel much better with a smoothie a day. I also became more "regular" which also helped. But the energy boost middle of the day was lovely. I typically would have around lunch time, or middle of the afternoon.

Over time, I would dabble in different combinations and fruit mixes to find what I liked the best in taste, as well as the vitamin mix that packed the most punch IMHO for my preference.

That being said, if you find you do not like it or can't stay with it. Your 'investment' is minimal if you buy a junker and toss it. No need to get a $300-500.00 deal right out of the gate.

I cook with kale all the time, it's prominent in a lot of portuguese dishes, but never considered having it with fruit though, worth a shot, I know its loaded with good stuff in it.

I think speed and efficiency (pulp dryness) are the 2 biggest factors to look into.

They say a super fast spinning juicer will oxidize your juice and it will be frothy from the aeration. But it will make your juicer way quicker than the slower quieter auger types.

I agree with the post that recommended trying it out with a 'cheaper' model and if you liked it then you could upgrade. Ease of cleaning should also be a factor since you dont want to get discouraged and stop using the unit.

Looks like the difference is only the accessories. The more expensive models include a jar to grind grains into flour, and the most expensive model also has a 2L jar for large quantities.

So I guess the question is whether those are useful options for home use. I'm pretty sure I could live with buying flour and blending in batches.

The warranty might be different too, they mentioned 7 years and 5 years in different places on the site.

Ah I see, thank you for the good explanation. I guess it might be nice to have a capable blender as well as a good juicer for greens where extracting the nutes is all you need/want to do.
