Just make sure you get a quality Doctor.

Avoid clinics that advertise DISCOUNT EYE SURGERY

I have one already. My husband's cousin is an eye surgeon here, but no matter what he tells me, I can't bring myself to do it. I am such a baby.

Your not being a baby, far from it. Your using your head in realizing the risk associated with the surgery. One fraction of an inch of that laser going the wrong way and you could be blind for life. Sure it happens extremely rarely, but it still is something which could happen. Is it worth the convenience of not needing glasses/contacts, I don't think so. Just my opinion Jen.

My brother had it done.. he's an artist/architect and he was fine right after the surgery. He loved it.

On the other hand, a friend of ours had it done. One eye is okay but the other one didn't work out so well. He has to wear a contact in that one eye.

Funny thing I heard on the radio the other day. A clinic boasting they have 100% success. They explain the criteria for 100% success... they talk about the doctor's credentials and stuff..

and then.... they say "Join us in our Grand Opening!"

okay, so they achieved 100% success b/c they basically have had no patients?? LOLOL

I'm too chicken too.. just afraid b/c my eyes are so weird anyway...

~edited b/c i hate stupid mistakes~

I bet you haven't talked to anyone where their operation wasn't successful though. I don't know what the % of failure is, I know its probably under 0.1%, but that's still 1 in a 1000... just something to keep in mind.

While I'm here discouraging you from this operation ( ), I hope Roger and others here have successfully discouraged you from getting a boob job as I think it was posted here about 2 weeks ago?

lol. NO. I really do want that. I figure I should just do the eyes first so I can really admire the tits after they are done

Hahaha... That's Good Jen :-)

Why not get magnifying contacts, would take care of the enlargement and won't cause permanent damage to your eyes or chest :-)

I would wait like another year or two, from what I have been hearing that they are continuing to improve the the surgery. I am going to wait like 3 years or so. I can deal with contacts for that long.

Bifocal contacts. Upper half (where your boobs would be visible) would magnify and the lower half would be normal.

In all due seriousness though, getting a boob job is rather safe by comparison to eye surgery. I would never want to lose my vision, the world has so much beauty that I would never want to go blind.

i had it done,,
there's always risks when it comes to surgery,, the doctors try there best to screen risky people first,, ie old people,, or really bad eyesight,

but some just might wanna take the risk to get your money,,

the operation was painless,, i only felt a slight pressure when they cut the flap,

the operation only took 5 minutes for both eyes!!!
i walked out the door without my glasses

the damn doctor does like 50 a day,

it cost me like $2500 for the lifetime warranty,
i'm only 27 so i thought it was worth it since there is no gaurantee for the future,,

so after 5 months i still got 20/15 vision,

BTW what really got me doing was when i read this article
http://www.lasikplus.com/wash_post01.html
if the cheap ass government was doing it then i was sure that this was something good

I was gonna get it last month, but... they said I have to do LASEK instead, because my cornea is so thin...

4 weeks of downtime, etc... unlike Lasik which is only a few days.

I said fuck it, I'll spend the 4k on new glasses and contacts for now.

Dont worry about bought equipment.. better to find a high quality doctor.. most will use a central place and use their equipment.. i had mine done about 3 years ago now.. best thing ever.. well other then the penis enlargement..

One day I was reading that greg maddux was getting it done.. I figured if a cy young winner was doing it in his prime, the risk couldnt be too great..

Shit it takes about 10 mintues of prep, laser is about 30 seconds on each eye..

I've thought about doing it but what worries me is what might happen 10 years after.. or 20... or 30... There aren't any long-term statistics because it's all so new.

I've heard of people who end up far-sighted after a few years (needing glasses or contacts once again)...or their eyes get worse. Then there's the issue of problems when driving at night. Like most others here, I overuse my eyes. Contacts have always been a breeze for me.

this had concerned me also,, since this procedure is less than 15 years old,,

so thats why i got the full lifetime warranty,, whenever my vision drops i can get it fixed without any costs

I'd be worried about just how many times it could be redone before the eye tissue is too scarred.

from what they told me, the eye is fasted healing part of the human body,, when it gets cut it doesn't need stiches,
besides to do enhancements, the eye flap isn't cut again,
they just lift it back up no cutting involved

I'm so, so tempted...but scared as Hell. Mom got it done, but only after she started having to wear bi-focals. I can still acheive 20/20 with contacts (blind as a bat without) so it would really suck if I had to shift my prescription in any major way.

Thus far the surgery seems to have a better track record than, say, VeriSign does on domain transfers...might just go ahead and take the risk in a few years. I do find myself getting really, REALLY tired of contacts/glasses.

But I'd hate to trade a minor inconvenience for a major one.

From what I've seen on TV about it, a large number of people have decreased vision at night. I have very poor vision, and have problems walking around without my glasses. I still won't get this surgery done.

My girlfriend had it done, and she swears by it. I watched the whole thing on the little TV out front and it was quite a thing to watch.

She was able to walk out with no contacts or glasses. She did have decreased night vision for about a week, but that cleared up quite a bit. She recommends it, and is currently shopping around for a dcotor for her breast augmentation also lol sounds like you two should chat....

Can't comment on the rest of the problems, but this occurs naturally as the body ages - the muscles in the eyes harden and make it harder to focus the lens on near objects...

I've been keeping an eye (no pun intended!) on this subject for about 10 years, and I'm still not convinced yet - some doctors claim that much better than 20/20 vision will be easily achievable shor t l y (Damn Lensman and his R T L adversion! ). Do I have my eyes done now, or wait a few years to get cat-like vision? When cat-vision is available, what will be available in a few years time?

Damnit! Why can't I have everything now?

LASEK doesnt involve 4 weeks down time thats the most popular
way to have it done cause you see as soon as you get up

thats what I had and probably what playa had

also the laster doesnt cut a flap in your eye its and actualy blade that does it

if anyone wants to see it done most offices do it behind a glass wall so you can see and you can see on the television monitor what the doctor is seeing through the microscope

Hey PK its actually not that new

its new having the convienence of a laser

back in the 50's and 60's they did it with a knife and a somewhat steady hand never able to get it perfect but abler to make the person see much better

I had mine done here they are all across the country

Jen.....
First, ANY eye surgery is a risk.
It's not for everyone. A compentent Dr will screen you for your suitability, thickness of cornea, pupil dialtion...etc.

However, I had Lasik in Nov '99.

It was the best fucking money I ever spent.

I was very nearsighted and had astigmatism as well.
I was running around with two pair of glasses, one for near (computer screen distance) and one for far (driving).

I was going mad! And the contacts suck!

The surgery itself was a breeze, they even gave me a Valium first.

Took about 15 mins per eye. When I sat up I could actually read the clock on the wall.

In my case, the doctor "tweaked" my eyes with what is called monovision.

My right eye was brought up to 20/20.
Left eye was brought up to only 20/100.

This allows me to read close up, and to see distance, without any additional help, such as reading glasses.

(You contact wearers can test this if you are nearsighted first, just use one contact lens, in the primary eye, usually the right if you are right handed, or visa versa, and your brain will decide which eye to use for primary focus)

Anyhow, it works like a charm for me......BUT

ANY surgery is a risk. Make sure you find a good opthmologist with experience with this new technology would be my best advice.

Most people have night time "halos" from things like oncoming headlights for a few weeks, but in my case it went away in about a month.

Good Luck!

I talked to atleast 25 of my coworkers and friends and they all swore by it. I had about 3 - 4 weeks of prechecks (due to the fact that I'm diabetic) Once they decided that I had no problem healing they went forward with it.

ALL of the people I talked to said they had no trouble and everything was great.

Now the hard to explain part. Apparently my pupils when dialated at night get very large, so large in fact that they catch the outter rim of the cut. What this means is, during the day or in a well lit area I see 20/15. At night or in a dark room I see 20/15 until you add light, then it's like looking through a piece of plastic, still seeing 20/15 but with horrible halo/hazzing. I have a feeling as I get older that I will not be able to drive at night, currently I deal with it ok.

For ME, it wasn't worth it, I would still gladly wear glasses to see correctly at night or in the dark, but I think I'm a minority, I find very few that don't like their results.

Basically find a damned good Dr. and you are still just taking a chance, there is no guarantee.

Hope that helps,

MoTives

I had Lasik on 11/1/01. The first night, the flap detached and it hurt like crazy. I went in the next day and they put a 'bandage' lense on my eye, and it felt fine. The other flap detached later too. They put me on some different drops, and eventually everything healed up nicely.

It has been almost a year, and my vision still fluxuates slightly on almost a daily basis. Some days my right eye sees better, the next day, the left is better. But my vision is still good.

I had some ups and downs, but overall, I am glad I got it done. I really hated glasses and contacts.

If you are extra nervous, they can increase the dosage of valium. I couldn't believe how quick the surgery itself was. When the doc said they were all done, I thought he was joking.

Erm, what are you talking about Willis?

LASIC and LASEK are 2 different procedures.

LASIC is where they use a blade to cut a flap, and use a laser to shape it.

LASEK is where they use a solution to loosen the flap, and move the whole damn thing over, use the laser, then move it back.
No blade is used, because its too thin, it would risk damaging the remaining cornea.

LASIC is the most popular, LASEK isnt.

LASIC there is basically little to no downtime, LASEK there is between 3 and 5 weeks before you can drive again, generally.

We on the same page here Tanker?
