Jen.....
First, ANY eye surgery is a risk.
It's not for everyone. A compentent Dr will screen you for your suitability, thickness of cornea, pupil dialtion...etc.
However, I had Lasik in Nov '99.
It was the best fucking money I ever spent.
I was very nearsighted and had astigmatism as well.
I was running around with two pair of glasses, one for near (computer screen distance) and one for far (driving).
I was going mad! And the contacts suck!
The surgery itself was a breeze, they even gave me a Valium first.
Took about 15 mins per eye. When I sat up I could actually read the clock on the wall.
In my case, the doctor "tweaked" my eyes with what is called monovision.
My right eye was brought up to 20/20.
Left eye was brought up to only 20/100.
This allows me to read close up, and to see distance, without any additional help, such as reading glasses.
(You contact wearers can test this if you are nearsighted first, just use one contact lens, in the primary eye, usually the right if you are right handed, or visa versa, and your brain will decide which eye to use for primary focus)
Anyhow, it works like a charm for me......BUT
ANY surgery is a risk. Make sure you find a good opthmologist with experience with this new technology would be my best advice.
Most people have night time "halos" from things like oncoming headlights for a few weeks, but in my case it went away in about a month.
Good Luck!
