Its never too late. I started Tae Kwon Do not long ago and I love it ! My kid got me in to it and I tell you what ! it’s the best work out you’ll ever have.. and you will learn how to kick some ass outside of the internet!

tae kwon do in the US is pathetic. its not "martial arts" - its jumping around like a poorly trained gymnast on crack, trying to do impractical shit because it looks impressive, while some dork who got his black belt in 6 months of training tells you that you will be catching bullets with your teeth in no time.

although good and bad trainers do exist in any style, martial arts in the US is mostly bullshit and tae kwon do is by far the worst offender in my opinion.

I did Muy Thai (Thai Boxing) and Kick Boxing for 4 years and Jujitsu for 1 year before I popped a hernia in my abdomen and decided jujitsu was no longer an option. I will go back to kickboxing eventually when I stop smoking completely. Down to a pack or two a week

My trainer is “legally blind” yet he has every trophy in state and national competitions. He has been in early Norris movies (I’m in Texas), and trust me, he has some students that would kick some Korean ass (proven) on any given day..

Since you brought up Chuck Norris... i trained with Bill Reuter for many years, who beat Chuck Norris in Japan in what i believe was the last tournament he fought in.

I did Kempo from 8 years old until 24 years old. I got my 3rd degree black belt, and was an assistant instructor for a couple of schools.

I switched gears and did Tang Soo Do from 24 to 27.

Done many types over the years... stuck with Hwarang Mu Sul Hak Gyo the longest to get my Black... about 8 years.

Tried out Kyokushinkai an Shotokan Karate here but they were how you describe TKD in the states. Promoting 6 month black belts, points tournaments without full contact and wearing protective gear, nothing below the waist etc... truly pathetic.

I'm taking up Modern arnis. Although we use sticks for practice. That's the same martial arts you seen on Tomb Raider 2 movie. You can basically apply the principles using a knife, barefist, or any hard object you can get your hands on.

Also tried MMA style grappling and it was just too gay for me, rolling around with guys heads in my crotch or vis versa just weirded me out. Coming off a back injury from last year, and I miss not making it to training. It's great you love TKD, as an excercise, but I'd think otherwise for self defense.

Just some quick questions about TKD.

How many times during class do you spar?

Do you spar against a fully resisting opponent?

I'm not as proud of that acomplishment as I was when I was 17 when I got it. As much as I talk shit about karate, and TMA's in general, I've actually used a Sanchin movement in a fight, though followed through with Aikido Ikkyo Nage. For me, those 4 years of training were worth it, because the one time I needed it, it came naturally.

That last fight was back in 2002, if I'm not mistaken.

I started up BJJ in 2003, and haven't looked back since.

because this summer we had a training camp (gashuku) here in Hungary and some okinawan senseis came here to teach us for 7 days. And I can tell you, these guys are not kidding! even the warm-up was more sweaty than some very hard trainings I had during this 16 years of practicing! Sometimes it was a bit boring because they don't know how to teach, but I admire and respect them very much!

As a veteran of many different martial arts, find one that you can compete in. As in every day. It's why I love BJJ so much. Every class, you put your skills on the line against someone else. Win or lose, you learn from it, and grow.

Nothing like pure exertion to calm the mind.

Judo, private classes with a 67 year old Japanese Judo Master who just finished 2nd in the Worlds this year but has won it many times previous.

I am open to anything and would chose based on the skill of the teacher in one style over another.

thats kinda funny actually.... i turned it into a business and started to hate it. later, i moved to russia and started training 2-3hrs a day for about a year and eventually got more into work than training.

karate (or any martial arts) is demanding. its not like weight lifting where you can just go when you have free time. with martial arts, you pretty much have to structure your life around it and the training schedule and thats hard to do for any real period of time. also, i started shotokan and was more impressed with the people i was training with (Russians in eastern Russia all trained by Kanazawa himself - http://www.fightingmaster.com/legends/kanazawa/) so it was real hardcore and a real eye opener. i liked it... but when i moved, i stopped. its hard to find great people to train with in a particular style if you move around.

Watched The Protector with Tony Jaa the other day. Much better fighting than in Ong Bak. Most of the movie was pretty corny and i often find plots in martial arts films to be about as useful as plots in porn movies... just something you tolerate. but there is definately some amazing fighting and choreography in that movie... not to mention the fact that most of the time, they are actually beating the shit out of each other for real.

Once again... BJJ is not some god given martial art... If it was Royce Gracie would've smashed the shit out of Matt Hughes... Sakuraba would've got his arse whipped by all four of the Gracies... Sudo and Kid would've been destroyed by Royler... list goes on and on...

You know of any good teachers or schools in the Boston area for a specific style. Most of the movie was pretty corny and i often find plots in martial arts films to be about as useful as plots in porn movies... just something you tolerate. but there is definately some amazing fighting and choreography in that movie... not to mention the fact that most of the time, they are actually beating the shit out of each other for real.
