How many of you mofos are into MARTIAL ARTS? If so what school?

Its never too late. I started Tae Kwon Do not long ago and I love it ! My kid got me in to it and I tell you what ! it’s the best work out you’ll ever have.. and you will learn how to kick some ass outside of the internet!

shake 09-13-2006 11:04 PM

I eat chinese food, that's good enough for me

Pleasurepays 09-13-2006 11:28 PM

tae kwon do in the US is pathetic. its not "martial arts" - its jumping around like a poorly trained gymnast on crack, trying to do impractical shit because it looks impressive, while some dork who got his black belt in 6 months of training tells you that you will be catching bullets with your teeth in no time.

although good and bad trainers do exist in any style, martial arts in the US is mostly bullshit and tae kwon do is by far the worst offender in my opinion.

Pleasurepays 09-13-2006 11:31 PM

i have a black belt in Go Ju Ryu btw... but i am more partial to shotokan. haven't trained in many years.

xNetworx 09-13-2006 11:34 PM

I did Muy Thai (Thai Boxing) and Kick Boxing for 4 years and Jujitsu for 1 year before I popped a hernia in my abdomen and decided jujitsu was no longer an option. I will go back to kickboxing eventually when I stop smoking completely. Down to a pack or two a week :helpme

My trainer is “legally blind” yet he has every trophy in state and national competitions. He has been in early Norris movies (I’m in Texas), and trust me, he has some students that would kick some Korean ass (proven) on any given day..

Competing in tae kwon do competitions and actually fighting are two VERY different things. you dont get points on the street. You don't get points on the street for sloppily throwing your leg out in panic and accidentally making some sort of contact.. or for throwing your fists around as someone lunges at you.

like i said.. there is good and bad everywhere. in the US, Tae Kwon Do ranks right up there with the worst of the worst.. because the fact is, as a business, traditional martial arts just doesn't sell. I learned this the hard way from owning my own school. The sad fact is that Fantasy sells. "Easy" sells. "I want my black belt in 6 month" sells. "I want to work for it and master something at any cost and any hardship, no matter how long it takes or how much it hurts" doesn't sell at all, except to a few hardcore people. tae kwon do more than any i have seen.... sell the fantasy (with the chinese styles right behind) and the primary appeal of Tae Kwon Do is how fast you can get your black belt.

everyone is in love with what they study. thats a big mistake. there is a japanese word for it.. but i forgot it and i'm too lazy to look... but if the last 10 years has shown us anything with all the UFC, MMA fighting.. its that NO particular martial art is enough to be a superior fighter.

Since you brought up Chuck Norris... i trained with Bill Reuter for many years, who beat Chuck Norris in Japan in what i believe was the last tournament he fought in. :) -- tried to google it... hahaha... Chuck Norris gets much more attention than he deserves.

“you dont get points on the street.”..
I’ll get point on the street just by braking some niqqaz jaw because he asked me to pay for his gas, just like it happened to me 10 years ago when I was in college driving through ghetto.
And speaking of UFC and Pride???? .. Who owns it now??? Sambo.. Fedor and his so boring style. Please tell me your teacher is better than him!!

Phil 09-14-2006 12:56 AM

Nigga.. 6 month??? Shit my brother has been doing it for 5 years and still red belt.

hey man! I've got black belt in goju too! I'm doing it for 16 years. wow.never thought I'll meet someone here with the same grade :)

edgeprod 09-14-2006 01:21 AM

I did Kempo from 8 years old until 24 years old. I got my 3rd degree black belt, and was an assistant instructor for a couple of schools.

I switched gears and did Tang Soo Do from 24 to 27.

if i'm not mistaken, Anthony does as well.

ilbb 09-14-2006 01:27 AM

Shotokan for 11years and then Kyokushin for 4 years

reynold 09-14-2006 01:32 AM

I once attended a Tae Kwon Do school when I was still 15. I just quit after 4 months after I got a fractured arm from a basketball game.

why did you finished it? I started it when I was 9, and I couldn't stop since then:)

Enema 09-14-2006 02:11 AM

Done many types over the years... stuck with Hwarang Mu Sul Hak Gyo the longest to get my Black... about 8 years.

Tried out Kyokushinkai an Shotokan Karate here but they were how you describe TKD in the states. Promoting 6 month black belts, points tournaments without full contact and wearing protective gear, nothing below the waist etc... truly pathetic.

msan 09-14-2006 03:48 AM

I'm taking up Modern arnis. Although we use sticks for practice. That's the same martial arts you seen on Tomb Raider 2 movie. You can basically apply the principles using a knife, barefist, or any hard object you can get your hands on.

Klen 09-14-2006 03:50 AM

I was go to mushasi karate some time.

munki 09-14-2006 03:53 AM

Studied shitu ryu itosu kai for many years.

emthree 09-14-2006 04:04 AM

I'm trained in dong dong foo

KingK7 09-14-2006 04:06 AM

I am a ninja

SinisterStudios 09-14-2006 05:38 AM

Shorin Ryu and Goshen Ryu here, did them on and off for many years. Also tried MMA style grappling and it was just too gay for me, rolling around with guys heads in my crotch or vis versa just weirded me out. Martial Arts in the US is mostly a joke, especially Tae Kwon Do and their points style tournements.

Go Full Contact or Go Home!!!!!!

MyNameIsNobody 09-14-2006 06:06 AM

TAE.....KWON......DO!!!!!!

(I trained "wtf" and not the boring, karate-like "itf")

rigrunner 09-14-2006 07:02 AM

My gym offers Karate.. I've been tempted to try it but wouldn't wanna piss off the pros by wasting the coache's time looking after my new dumb self...

So I'm thinking of beefing up first, then I won't look so stupid when I start..

psili 09-14-2006 07:06 AM

Was in Kuk Sool Wan for six years when I was a kid. Great way to keep ADD in check without the ritalin.

Nicky 09-14-2006 07:13 AM

Is street fighting a martial art? :upsidedow

Enema 09-14-2006 07:14 AM

I'm rather surprised the thread hasn't been drowned in the "BJJ is king, your standing up martial arts wouldn't stand a chance in a real fight" guys.

To answer your questions, I am a member of American Top Team

Coming off a back injury from last year, and I miss not making it to training. It's great you love TKD, as an excercise, but I'd think otherwise for self defense.

Just some quick questions about TKD.

How many times during class do you spar?

Do you spar against a fully resisting opponent?

carol.prime 09-14-2006 07:26 AM

I took Taekwondo when I was in the 3rd grade and now kickboxing

Damnit! :) I'm not as proud of that acomplishment as I was when I was 17 when I got it. As much as I talk shit about karate, and TMA's in general, I've actually used a Sanchin movement in a fight, though followed through with Aikido Ikkyo Nage. For me, those 4 years of training were worth it, because the one time I needed it, it came naturally. :) That last fight was back in 2002, if I'm not mistaken.

I started up BJJ in 2003, and haven't looked back since.

hzoltan 09-14-2006 08:02 AM

and have you ever been to Japan or China to learn something there for a while?
because this summer we had a training camp (gashuku) here in Hungary and some okinawan senseis came here to teach us for 7 days. And I can tell you, these guys are not kidding! even the warm-up was more sweaty than some very hard trainings I had during this 16 years of practicing! Sometimes it was a bit boring because they don't know how to teach, but I admire and respect them very much!

shuki 09-14-2006 08:18 AM

Anyone have a suggestion as to what a good style of martial arts would be to focus on the mind. I want to really concentrate on having better control over my anxiety and stress levels from work.

As a veteran of many different martial arts, find one that you can compete in. As in every day. It's why I love BJJ so much. Every class, you put your skills on the line against someone else. Win or lose, you learn from it, and grow.

Nothing like pure exertion to calm the mind. :)

WarChild 09-14-2006 08:27 AM

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at Gracie Barra Costa Rica under Sydney Machado.

Judo, private classes with a 67 year old Japanese Judo Master who just finished 2nd in the Worlds this year but has won it many times previous.

shuki 09-14-2006 08:28 AM

That is an interesting point.

Any resources to get a good overview of the different styles?

You know of any good teachers or schools in the Boston area for a specific style.

I am open to anything and would chose based on the skill of the teacher in one style over another.

Boston is like the Mecca of North East US MMA!

Anthony,

Shows how much I know :)

Thanks for the link. I will check in to it over the weekend and post more questions I am sure :thumbsup

No martial arts training is going to help you in this sceanario.

Build up your common sense, so that you never get in this situation.

thats kinda funny actually.... i turned it into a business and started to hate it. later, i moved to russia and started training 2-3hrs a day for about a year and eventually got more into work than training.

karate (or any martial arts) is demanding. its not like weight lifting where you can just go when you have free time. with martial arts, you pretty much have to structure your life around it and the training schedule and thats hard to do for any real period of time. also, i started shotokan and was more impressed with the people i was training with (Russians in eastern Russia all trained by Kanazawa himself - http://www.fightingmaster.com/legends/kanazawa/) so it was real hardcore and a real eye opener. i liked it... but when i moved, i stopped. its hard to find great people to train with in a particular style if you move around.

Not to dissappoint! :)

TKD Vs BJJ.

5 subs in 5 minutes, BJJ wins again!

Both guys belong to a MA board I admin and moderate. We have local events called Throwdowns, where members meet up and test their skills. These two guys, Cris and Hector are both members.

BJJ = Basically Just Judo :)

Watched The Protector with Tony Jaa the other day. Much better fighting than in Ong Bak. Most of the movie was pretty corny and i often find plots in martial arts films to be about as useful as plots in porn movies... just something you tolerate. but there is definately some amazing fighting and choreography in that movie... not to mention the fact that most of the time, they are actually beating the shit out of each other for real.

don't bring up rickson gracie... a guy with a 400-0 record... majority of it not documented... lost in a sambo tournament but cried about it... fought 2nd rate fighters in mma... supposedly takes all challengers yet denied bas rutten TWICE...

it's a myth...

Once again... BJJ is not some god given martial art... If it was Royce Gracie would've smashed the shit out of Matt Hughes... Sakuraba would've got his arse whipped by all four of the Gracies... Sudo and Kid would've been destroyed by Royler... list goes on and on...

I should add Frank Shamrock to that list since he recently beat a Gracie...

Pffftt.

If it werent' for the Gracies you'd still be doing your kata "Flying Dragon into Tiger Cleavage", instead of being a proper MMA fan.

I don't know many Gracie nuthuggers who think the Gracies will win any contest they get in, so I don't understand why a Gracie Hater thinks so.
