We had the turkey & sweat potato thread. Lets get important now.

Spill your favorite appetizers.
We all know the turkey, the taters, the cranberries, green beans, pie and stuff is just the stuff for the next days sandwiches.

I want to hear about the important part of the meal, the part we all fill up on before dinner is ever served. Just ideas or full blown recipes are accepted.

Oyster dressing and mac and cheese were the only 2 things I specifically requested be at the dinner table on Thanksgiving Day. I'm sure we'll also have collard greens and potato salad too, which is YUMMY

Im looking for other things besides side dishes.

Things to nibble on while the bird cooks or the game is on. You know that stuff between drinks you put in your mouth?

Stuff like deviled eggs, 7 layer dip, spicy nuts, salami and cheese, and so forth.

Ahh...I gotcha. We don't really have any "snacky" food on Thanksgiving. I save all my calories for the actual meal.

Different recipes for it but I use a box of Bisquick, 1 pound of cheese and one pound of hot sausage.

Make them into bite sized balls, put them into the oven at 350 till they're brown.

Google Bisquick sausage balls and you'll find all kinds of different measurements - PAY NO ATTENTION TO THOSE THAT MAKE YOU THINK YOU NEED MORE THAN THESE 3 INGREDIENTS!

not neccesarily a thanksgiving specific appetizer, but one of my all time favorites is beef crustinis.

take a nice load of baquette bread, slice into 1/3" pieces, brush with garlic butter and toast. then take a nice piece of prime rib or top round and cook to medium rare. slice into small pieces. take some butter at room temperature, and toss in a food processor with a little garlic, salt, and roasted red peppers.

now take your toasted bread, and spread a little of the red pepper butter on them. place a slice of beef, a piece of roasted red pepper, and a scallion on it and enjoy.

relatively simple and quite delicious.

oh, one more. take some chicken breasts and cut into strip. cut the strips in about 3/4" long chunks. roll in blackening spice, wrap in a small piece of bacon and bake until done.

tastes great either by itself, or with a little cajun bachamel sauce on it.

i reccomend using toothpicks to keep the bacon in place during cooking.

My mom asked the butcher in the grocery store the other day for a top round roast - it's all we ever made roast beef wise in NY. He told her, they don't sell top round down here! I mean, WTF? Bottom round is digustingly dry. Anyway, that recipe sounds delish!

I don't think we'll have any appetizers for T-day. How boring, I know. Christmas eve seafood dinner is where the appetizers are at!

I'm making a standing rib roast (it's aging in my fridge right now). Prepped with olive oil, kosher salt and fresh ground pepper with sage aujuis. It's like the only thing I know how to make hahah :-/

i'm not going to have any appetizers for thanksgiving either. gotta save room for turkey and stuffing and pumpkin pie.

and what the fuck? no top round? i don't think i would want to live in a place without that. you can get away with bottom round if you brine it or marinate it and then use a slow wet cooking method like braising. it won't be as good, but still tasty.

i've never had the seafood feast of the 7 fish on christmas eve. i need to make some more italian friends.

I often go to Food Network's website and do a search in the recipe field for ingredients.

I put in "bacon" and "toothpick" as desired ingredients: and got A few good leads

Last edited by NoHassleSteve; 11-22-2006 at 09:12 PM.. Reason: spelling correction on 'desired'

You make anything sound delicious! I love your recipes!

Oh I could write a book about the italian Christmas eve dinner. It goes on forever and it's all worth it. You should definitely try it sometime. Stuffed clams, squid, shrimp... ugh. Heaven! <3

I have to go with the puff pastries heat and serve appetizers from Costco.
They are Roasted Red Pepper, Florentine and two other kids that just blew us away. I would do those in a second, even though I'm against store bought items for Thanksgiving. I don't have the skills for puff pastry making.
