Can you deep fry with Olive Oil?
I want to deep fry some food but I want to make it as healthy as possible. Has anyone ever deep fried anything in Olive Oil? Is it even possible? The other alternative is Sunflower Oil.
Any recomendations?

Exactly what I was wondering ... why there was no "healt" restaurents using olive oil for fries...
My guess is that it wouldn't be cost effective and probably taste like crap |

yeah it's absolutely possible. get extra virgin if you are looking for the healthies/best tasting olive oil.
also start on a slightly lower heat than you would with vegatable oil and work it up. you should be fine though, i pan fry things in alot of olive oil all the time, never had a problem with it breaking down under prolonged/high heat.

Olive oil has a low temp smoke point so it will smoke before it is hot enough for frying food in it. It will also effect the taste of the food you are frying and will end up making fried food pretty expensive. Peanut oil is the best then canola, corn or safflower oil.

Olive oil smokes too much. Flaxseed oil is the healthiest choice, peanut is next best because it has a very high smoke point, and then sunflower oil is ok, but not as great. Canola oil soaks into the food a lot. Vegetable oils saturate the food as well. Of course you could always try beef tallow ;)
(so says the boyfriend who's done tons of research on this)

a friend once used the $70 per bottle super duper olive oil his girlfriend bought to make us some spring rolls when we were drunk - you can imagine her face the next morning ![]()

BTW you can fry with olive oil, though it flavors the food where many other oils have no flavor at all. It also has a very low smoke point and really is not recomended for most fry jobs.

Mix a bag of your favorite seasonings.
Put whatever potatoes (wedges, fries, etc) on a baking sheet. Spray them with cooking spray.. flip them and spray them on the other side. Then dump them in the bag of seasoning and shake well. Put them back on the baking sheet and cook at 400 until they are as brown as you like. The bit of oil will oven fry them. Serve with cold ketchup (and a dash of hot sauce ![]() ![]() |

No Olive oil isn't good for frying. Try canola or vegetable oil instead.

Read and learn, stay below the smoke points and you are safe. However if the smoke point is too low you don't fry you soak in hot oil.

burning temp of olive oil is too low need to watch out
as said the best is canola oil but you need to heat it well and dont over fill it with stuff otherwise the temp of the whole pot will drop and cause you fries or whatever to soak a lot of oil. |

I do this and the results are excellent, you can even try adding vegetables to the potatoes. There's a seasoning called 21 spices that tastes amazing when used in this way.
The guys who say don't use Olive oil to fry with are correct. It will burn before it gets to the correct temperature to fry food. When it burns it not only tastes bad but turns into a carbon substance that you don't really want to ingest. Virgin olive oils and flax seed oils are best added to food cold and not heated in any way. ![]() Quote:

Actually for years my wife has used olive oil for frying. Everything from french fries to eggs; works great. The secret is to use the xtra virgin oil and use a lower temp, takes a long time.
However food tastes wonderful and very good for you too; I'm surprised its not used by everybody but I guess it is a lot harder and takes practice, not to mention more expensive.
