Can you deep fry with Olive Oil?

I want to deep fry some food but I want to make it as healthy as possible. Has anyone ever deep fried anything in Olive Oil? Is it even possible? The other alternative is Sunflower Oil.

Any recomendations?

Doctor Dre 10-08-2005 04:07 PM

Exactly what I was wondering ... why there was no "healt" restaurents using olive oil for fries...

My guess is that it wouldn't be cost effective and probably taste like crap

RRRED 10-08-2005 04:08 PM

It will taste like shit and burn too... Use canola oil. That's the best :)

smack 10-08-2005 04:09 PM

yeah it's absolutely possible. get extra virgin if you are looking for the healthies/best tasting olive oil.

also start on a slightly lower heat than you would with vegatable oil and work it up.

you should be fine though, i pan fry things in alot of olive oil all the time, never had a problem with it breaking down under prolonged/high heat.

DateDoc 10-08-2005 04:14 PM

Olive oil has a low temp smoke point so it will smoke before it is hot enough for frying food in it. It will also effect the taste of the food you are frying and will end up making fried food pretty expensive. Peanut oil is the best then canola, corn or safflower oil.

mrthumbs 10-08-2005 04:16 PM

palm oil.. makes deep frying healthy even.

Elli 10-08-2005 04:18 PM

Olive oil smokes too much. Flaxseed oil is the healthiest choice, peanut is next best because it has a very high smoke point, and then sunflower oil is ok, but not as great. Canola oil soaks into the food a lot. Vegetable oils saturate the food as well. Of course you could always try beef tallow ;)

(so says the boyfriend who's done tons of research on this)

ThumbLord 10-08-2005 04:20 PM

olive oil CANNOT be used for deep frying .......... there is a new thingy called FOOGLE or JOOGLE, no sorry it is GOOGLE ( funny name ) and it seems you can get your answers there, well so I am told

MaDalton 10-08-2005 04:27 PM

works - but i wouldn't recommend it

a friend once used the $70 per bottle super duper olive oil his girlfriend bought to make us some spring rolls when we were drunk - you can imagine her face the next morning :1orglaugh

its not healthy to eat anything deep fried in anything. stop and look at how many calories you need in a day, figure out what your daily fat intake should be and then you will see that you are eating more than that in one sitting.

it you want to eat healthier, stop frying food. that would be your best start. oil is still fat.... regardless of what type of oil it is.

You are aware if proper frying procedures are followed fried foods will not gain nearly any oil from the frying. Correct temperature is crucial though. The water in the food tries to escape via steam and this pressure pushing outward prevents the oil from saturating inward.

BTW you can fry with olive oil, though it flavors the food where many other oils have no flavor at all. It also has a very low smoke point and really is not recomended for most fry jobs.

BV 10-08-2005 05:57 PM

I deep fry in peanut oil and pan fry with olive oil.

no to olive oil, bake is the only healthy suggestion.

mardigras 10-08-2005 06:23 PM

Mix a bag of your favorite seasonings.

Put whatever potatoes (wedges, fries, etc) on a baking sheet. Spray them with cooking spray.. flip them and spray them on the other side. Then dump them in the bag of seasoning and shake well. Put them back on the baking sheet and cook at 400 until they are as brown as you like. The bit of oil will oven fry them. Serve with cold ketchup (and a dash of hot sauce:))... you will never miss the grease. :thumbsup

No Olive oil isn't good for frying. Try canola or vegetable oil instead.

Yes

but if you REALLY want to deep fry some stuff, and the ONLY oil you have is olive oil, it's possible.. :)

Nylz 10-08-2005 07:09 PM

oh and to answer the question about the healthy stuff:

Like other people said, if you really want to be healthy, don't deep fry food...

Sarah_Jayne 10-08-2005 07:12 PM

rapeseed oil is good and lower in fat

Probono 10-08-2005 07:13 PM

Read and learn, stay below the smoke points and you are safe. However if the smoke point is too low you don't fry you soak in hot oil.

rapeseed oil = Canola oil and oil = fat. there is no such thing as cooking oil with lower fat content... only oils with different proportions of different types of fats. canola is high in mono-unsaturated fats.

is it possible? hell ya. i do it a couple times a week. is it healthy? yup! is it expensive? hell ya :Oh crap (abotu $6 for a small bottle) :helpme

woj 10-09-2005 01:37 AM

Even if you manage to pull it off, it will taste like crap....

Ace-wtf 10-09-2005 05:18 AM

burning temp of olive oil is too low need to watch out

as said the best is canola oil but you need to heat it well and dont over fill it with stuff otherwise the temp of the whole pot will drop and cause you fries or whatever to soak a lot of oil.

$5 submissions 10-09-2005 06:11 AM

It will probably burn quicker than regular oil used for deep frying.

Probono 10-09-2005 07:21 AM

As long as you do not exceed the smoke point you are good.

Olive Oil: Unrefined 320 F
(Good Eats) 375 F
Extra Virgin* 406 F
Virgin** 420 F
Olive Oil* 438 F
Pomace Oil** 460 F
Extra Light* 468 F

Once you heat an Olive Oil you destroy all and any health benefits you might receive from it. In fact deep frying anything pretty much assures that whatever you stick in your mouth is useless cholestrol fat calories.

Do yourself a favour and bake your frites in the oven. I do with a bit of garlic powder and rosemary.

Funbrunette 10-09-2005 08:10 AM

This thread is useless without pics...lol :1orglaugh

imageman 10-09-2005 09:41 AM

I do this and the results are excellent, you can even try adding vegetables to the potatoes. There's a seasoning called 21 spices that tastes amazing when used in this way.
The guys who say don't use Olive oil to fry with are correct. It will burn before it gets to the correct temperature to fry food. When it burns it not only tastes bad but turns into a carbon substance that you don't really want to ingest. Virgin olive oils and flax seed oils are best added to food cold and not heated in any way. :2 cents:

I don't use any oil at all if I can help it these days but i perhaps should have said saturated fats.

I haven't deep fried anything in about seven years.

Jimbo 10-09-2005 10:00 AM

you'Re all fat and need colestherol check

elitetec 10-09-2005 05:54 PM

atkins guy

TheSaint 10-09-2005 06:19 PM

Actually for years my wife has used olive oil for frying. Everything from french fries to eggs; works great. The secret is to use the xtra virgin oil and use a lower temp, takes a long time.

However food tastes wonderful and very good for you too; I'm surprised its not used by everybody but I guess it is a lot harder and takes practice, not to mention more expensive.

reynold 10-09-2005 08:08 PM

I am not really particular with oil brands, or if it's zero cholestrerol or what. JUst making sure that I aint getting same fried menu everyday.
