![]() So get this I bought phones approximately 8 months ago for my staff to use (5 cell phones) from telus under their "Mike" network. Basically the same thing as Nextel with the "beep beep" bullshit.
Anyways I was assured the phones would work in our area and since I am usually at work or at home I seldom used my phone. Well apparently the phones don't work worth shit up here and my guys basically gave up using them because of dropped calls, missed calls and bad reception. The phones work great in Toronto (45 minutes away from us) but not very well at all up here. So I call Telus to ask them if we can switch over from the mike network over to their PCS network. I told them I would resign for another 3 year contract on the phones and pay for new phones. Well they tell me that I have to pay a cancellation fee of $1300 and then buy new phones + a new activation fee on the new phones. WTF!!!! So anyways I told them that was ridiculous and it's there fault the phones don't work up here not mine. They said too bad you signed the contract and we can't guarantee service??!! Well anyways I told them to go stick their phones up their ass and I am now stuck with a $1700 cancellation fee because I have 2 years left on my contract for the mike phones. Anyways what an enormous amount of horseshit, I am going to have our CTO send the consumer affairs department a nasty letter and also see if we can get someone farther up the chain of command to handle our complaint. I mean what a bunch of bullshit, I kept on telling them I just wanted to get phones that would work I didn't want to cancel my service. I was paying $500+ a month for phones that no one was using because the phones would not work!! JEEEEESH!!! Anyways rant over, I feel better now ![]() DH |

You were assured that the phones would work and they did not so I think that you should be able to get out of the contract for free as they did not hold up to thier end of the bargain. Talk to your lawyer about it.

damn, I would never lock myself into a 3 year contract on a phone. $500 for 5 phones seems like a lot also, hopefully you had a few others on that plan.

File a report with the Better Business Bureau, it does take forever to get a resolution but it usually does end favourably.

My favourite Telus move was when I had Telus Highspeed Internet... they suddenly introduced "Telus Spam Blocker" for just $4.95 a month.
Coincidently that month, my telus email address began getting bombarded with tons of spam of every kind you can imagine. Funny since I've never given that address out to anyone. |

This really sucks. With only 3 companies to get a cell phone from in Canada, Telus sure treats it's mobile customers like they don't have any options.
It's not like we were asking to cancel the phones, get out of the contract, or even really reduce the monthly bill, we just wanted the phones to work like they said they would. It's no wonder someone took the time to rearrange the letters in Telus and make some pretty new corporate logos. ![]() ![]()

![]() Every cell contract I've seen doesn't promise coverage. Hindsight being 20/20, the best thing to do is find a company that has a "trial" period (3-7 days) where you can tests the phones where you'll use them and return them if necessary. I live in such a remote area that only Cingular will work here and I lucked out that we have a Cingular tower on the top of our mountain or that probably wouldn't work either, lol! |

You can try this, sometimes it works if the accounting department are a bunch of morons. Write out a check to them for $1. Write on the back (in small print): When this check is cashed Telus agrees that all oustanding debt by me (put your full name or name of company) is paid in full.

That's fucked up DH.
If this had happened in the US, there are probably about 6 different government agencies you can call to try and get things handled when you're ripped off like that. Not to mention I just wouldn't pay the cancel fee or the bill. I would notify them in writing, registered mail, of my intent to cancel the contract for a breach on their end. When they put the account in collections you sue them to have the blemish removed from your credit, for your attorney fees, and for "damage to your reputation" for tarnishing your credit temporarily. But that's just me.

I had the same shit happen with nextel. The service was fine. But at the end of my contract I wanted to cancel and switch carriers. Well they said I never signed a year contract and signed a 3 year. They wanted to charge me like 700 per phone to cancel it. which was all bullshit cause when i got the phones I used my credit and only had to sign for the year...
Anyways... I went all the way up to the regional manager and he flat out told me to shove it. He also was very aggressive and also said he was going to "ruin my credit"... in which I replied with "I am going to burn your house".... what a shit storm I caused after that... |

I understand exactly what you are talking about. I bought the exact same phone as the guys in drinking hard's office. I bought mine for personal use thinking it would be useful and fun. All the fucking phone has caused me is headaches and missed calls. I use it for work as well as home use and I have no service even in the town of Orangeville. I called to complain and I got the run around. Then, of course, I drop my phone in a glass of beer and it no longer worked. I call telus since I had had the phone for a month and ask them what they can do for me since I had been a customer for over 6 years with them (ever since my first cell) and all of my family uses telus. i told them the situation with the phone and asked about a new one (free of course, or with a discount). I was told that it didn't matter and that I had to pay full price.
I had been very nice up to that point because I feel that most people would rather help out a nice person instead of a complete bitch. So anyway, no deal. They told me that i either buy a new phone or cancel my account. I signed up for 3 years just like mark and would have to pay $650 if I cancelled. I freaked out at this point. Talked to a manager and told him my situation. He told me he would give me a $50 discount. But if I wanted to cancel I had to pay right away and they wouldn't take payments and they didn't want me as a customer anymore. Well, I didn't get the discount. i bought the phone again cause I am stupid and the service still sux. Telus is the worst company to work with and they don't care about their customers at all. All I have been hearing lately is that they are terrible and not worth it. |
