Yes. What happened is considered a civil rights violations: both free speech and voter's rights. The owner is crazy because the burden of proof in Federal court for this type of thing is very low.

A boss has certain rights when his employee is representing his company in an official capacity. If she were wearing a t-shirt at work that was pro-Kerry maybe he'd have a leg to stand on in telling her to stop wearing it to work or be fired. But her car?

He could have told her to park her car off company property I suppose, but I don't see how sporting a Kerry sticker would impact negatively on anyone's business in the first place.

Her car, his lot. At a factory I don't see the sense in getting fucking upset over a bumper sticker. A more public establishment may want a rule that preculdes making politcal statemenst on company properity. About any statement you make on the subject is gonna piss someone off so why lose business.

Free speech has NOTHING to do with your boss deciding if they want to fire you or not....unless your boss is the government

In a right to hire state, you can be fired for ANY reason except those protected by law (race, age, disability, etc.). Period.

Was it a stupid overreaction on his part? Yes. Did he have every legal right to fire her? Yes.

She was a factory worker, probably unionized. If it's a decent union and they have good language in their collective agreement, well, any collective agreement worth it's salt should/would have wording in it regarding unfair management practise.

Hard to see the legitimacy of how a boss can tell an employee what they can or dan't put in or on their own car. Like I said earlier, he probably just should have told her she can no longer park her car on his lot, but even in that it could blow up into a big mess.

Depending on the employment laws in her State, I'd say her boss knew what he was doing before he shit canned her. In Florida, my boss can come up to me and say, "I don't like what color your car is and you dress funny. You're fired." and I couldn't do shit about it.
