i love all the religious experts here

i've sat by and read one too many threads were gfy experts have come out and made blatant ignorant statements.

how many of you have lived amongst muslims in sudan, or jews in gaza, or christians in lebanon, or hindus in kashmir, or buddhists in tibet....etc....

if all you base your knowledge on is reading an article here and there, then wtf do you really know about someone elses religion?

religion isnt what is fucked up, its the people that misinterpret it.

i was all over the place with that example.

what i mean is that a person making comments about a certain religion should not just repeat what someone else told them, they should actually go visit a land where that religion strives and overcomes, so that person can see the religion for real and then make a judgement based upon the experience.

yeah I see your point...

but sometimes, REPEATING negative actions from groups who belong to a specific religion and dedicate these actions to their religion can put a stain on the religion as a whole

No, it is the religion. And the less literally the people interpret it, the better.

thats true.

i grew up with every kind of culture imaginable, but i never stereotyped people by their religions. unfortunately, theres a large majority of people that made up their mind about certain religions based solely on someone elses opinions.

b/c plenty of religions and religious doctrine of judeo/christian protestant sects/catholic/islam is _seriously_ flawed.

That's not even mentioning the religious beliefs of systems that are waaaaaaaaaaay out there, like scientology for instance.

excellent statement Izz.

But to me it seems like in the here and now some religions are meant to bring people together through inclusion, some are meant to bring people together by the removal of all who do not believe, some religions are not truly religions but ways of living to get along with all those who are logical and wish to do the same and yet still others are meant to control and profit from that control.

I try not to take any "religion" as 100% flawless and truthful, choosing to live my life using the stories and lessons to become a better person to deal with as a friend, lover and neighbor. Things that seem designed to control and profit, to turn me against others because they are of a differant type are thrown out. So I guess one can say I follow more closely the non religions and just live trying to help other good people prosper and make myself happy.

let me say this again.

religion is not fucked up, its the people that misinterpret it that are the problem.

truly religious people would not take another life, they do not steal, they stay within the guidelines of their religion trying to achieve whatever afterlife they're promised.

its the fucks who misinterpret their own religion that cause all of the problems.

if you ask a real muslim what he thinks about osama, he will tell you that osama is not a true muslim. no where in the koran does it say that taking an innocent life will get you to heaven.

if you ask a real jew if its ok to take a tank into a village and bomb an innocent persons house, they will tell you its not the jewish way.

if you ask an true orthodox (christian) serbian if it was ok to commit genocide in the name of god, they will tell you no.

my point is that all of this religious infighting has been caused by people who have contorted religion to fit their own interpretation.

Some religions and ideals leave themselves open for more interpretation, this is where you get into having sects. Obscure and questionable passages that are translated as closely as possible seem to be the things that control these types. They read what they want to read and hear what they want to hear. Funny that their whole argument is based on probably 1/1000th of a document, they throw anything else that conflicts with the bad interpretation out completely, I see the same thing in lots of debates, but in debate it causes you to lose, in religion it causes you to become a leader

lolol scientology is wacky, but at least we know for a fact that it was created my a man.

as for the judaism, christianity, and islam, all of their words were handed down and then written later on. so in translation alot of meaning has been lost.

the ideaology of religions is a very positive way to approach life.
we are the ones that make ill of it

i look at most religions and the purpose behind them. basically, they all are meant to enlighten the followers. if we take every written word of each religion literally then we are in trouble.

thats why i agree with what you say, there is no 100% flawless religion

the bible was written by man, and these are all examples of what the authors thought suited the times. just like the pope today with his stance on genetics or abortion.

these are the religious opinions of men.

however, christianity itself is a positive religion teaching others to conduct themselves in society to seperate us from being animals. trying to bring order to life.

so i repeat, i do not find anything wrong with religion, but when people misinterpret it things go awry.

"The Lord was grieved that he had made man on the Earth, and his heart was filled with pain. So I will wipe mankind, whom I have created, from the face of the Earth- men and animals, and creatures that move along the ground, and birds of the air- for I am grieved that I have made them."
..........Genesis 6:6-7

And the swine, though he divide the hoof, and be cloven-footed, yet he cheweth not the cud; he is unclean to you.
Of their flesh shall ye not eat, and their carcass shall ye not touch; they are unclean to you.
..........Leviticus 11:7-8

And all that have not fins and scales in the seas, and in the rivers, of all that move in the waters, and of any living thing which is in the waters, they shall be an abomination unto you.
..........Leviticus 11:10

"While the people of Israel were in the wilderness, they found a man gathering sticks on the Sabbath day...And the Lord said to Moses, 'The man shall be put to death; all the congregation shall stone him with stones outside the camp.' And all the congregation brought him outside the camp, and stoned him to death with stones, as the Lord commanded Moses."
..........Numbers 15:32

Quote:

"Do not think that I have come to bring peace on earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother- in-law...."
..........Matthew 10:34

"Do you think I have to come to give peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division; for henceforth in one house there will be five divided, three against two and two against three; they will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against her mother, mother- in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against her mother-in- law.
..........Luke 12:51

..........Luke 12:47

"If any one comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple."
..........Luke 14:26

these are the religious opinions of men.

however, christianity itself is a positive religion teaching others to conduct themselves in society to seperate us from being animals. trying to bring order to life.

so i repeat, i do not find anything wrong with religion, but when people misinterpret it things go awry.

So you believe in religion "itself"... something that exists independently of the religious books?

Let me enlighten you. Christianity holds that the Bible is the actual word of God. Something similar goes for Islam and Judaism.

That's the whole problem of religion. It almost always follows a set of rather random and often outdated dogmas. That is a problem not caused by people misinterpreting religions, but by the very essence of most religions.

As for something to "separate us from being animals"... rationality does a much better job at that than religion.

then i will go further back into "mythology", egyptians, greeks, mayans, etc....

all great cultures followed religion. religion establishes order and creates the building blocks of a stable society.

marxism/communism tried to abolish religion amongst society and still failed.

i've drifted off from the original purpose of this thread.

to sum up how i feel, i'm tired of people stereotyping people of certain religions. instead of lumping everyone into a whole, they should take the time to educate themselves fully about that religion.

All old cultures followed religion because they lacked the scientific knowledge to explain natural phenomena any other way.

But if you look at the influence of the scientific findings of pre-socratic Greek philosophers on religion, it's clear that there is a strong connection between the increase of scientific knowledge and the decrease of religious influences.

If you seriously want to claim that communism failed because it tried to abolish religion, I will point and laugh in your general direction.

But following a religion isn't something as trivial as race. Religious positions actually say a lot about people's ideas, and judging people based on their ideas is not stereotyping.

lol, i just lost an entire post to the gfy monster...i wish we could debate this in person instead of on posts. i can't write all that i am trying to say and maybe i'm getting misread.

i'll make this brief

example:
islam. does a muslim from bosnia have as much animosity towards judaism as a muslim from palestine?

no. why? because they interpret islam differently.

so can you judge all of islam based on this one example. do all muslims hate jews?

no. so then you cant stereotype all muslims.

I grew up in the SF Valley (Encino for a good part of that time) & went to Valley Beth Shalom's temple a few times (and a few others)...and am German/Jewish on my mother's side...

spent a few months in Ryadh and hung out with a lot of locals and spent many many hours in Mosques, etc...

lived in Korea for a few years and hung out with some Buddists...

went to Catholic school for a few years and was an altar boy, etc...

and I still don't know shit....

all I know is that I like open-minded people that are tolerant of eachother...I'm intolerant of intolerant people...that's pretty much it...

at least you have seen something of different cultures and that means alot. most of the posters on GFY have never left their own zip code let alone the country, and then they come on here and bash religions.

people need to stop generalizing and stereotyping and start speaking their own truth instead of what is fed to them.
