The Aikens fad is dying

I knew it would happen sooner or later. Another diet fad bites the dust. When will Americans learn that to lose weight and keep it off, you need to eat a low fat sensible diet and do cardio on a regular basis?

If you exercise intensly and watch what you eat in terms of quantity you will lose weight and stay slim.

The "Atkins" diet works. No ifs, ands, or buts.

Sounds to me like a bunch of lazy people moving on to the next fad...

People don't want to hear that. Exercise requires work and most people don't want to put forth the effort. They want to believe that they can still eat at MacDonnalds as long as the menu says it's low carb.

Hey cutting off both you arms and legs will help you lose weight to. Doesn't mean it's a good idea.

Any diet that says the worst thing for you to eat on a double quarter pounder with cheese is the BUN, well them something is wrong.

Most polls are that small. Almsot every poll that says Bush or Kerry or whoever is leading in the election is based on less than 1000 people.

you are right, 500 people proves nothing.

If the survey had been of 1000 people and done in a scientific manner, it would be relevant.

1000 people is the magic number, weather you wants stats for a country of 10,000 people or 250 million.

The induction phase of Aikens does work but people are suppose to move out of that stage after a short time and eat sensibly.

The main problem for all fad diets is that they don't teach you to change your lifestyle. Going ON a diet implies that you will one day go OFF the diet. Once you go OFF the diet, you usually go right back to eating the foods that got you fat in the first place. In order to succeed in the long haul, you need to CHANGE YOUR LIFESTYLE PERMANENTLY.

People on Aikens either (1) stay on induction for too long a period and ruin their health, or (2) go right back to their old eating habits and gain all the weight back they originally lost.

There are ads out for low carb pizza, low carb coke, every fast food place out here has a low carb burger.

And at the grocery store they have little ad things saying "low carbs" or "no carbs" by products on the shelves. Even Ben & Jerry's has a low carb ice cream out.

Doesn't Krispy Kreme have a low carb donut even? Its hardly a dying fad.

but that's a problem with the people not the diet.

Atkins pushes a lifestyle change...there are numerous books and cookbooks to take you through all steps clear to the life time maintenance plan.

I love Clay Aikens..

Seriously.. we ate at Ruby Tuesday this weekend. They post all their nutritional info on their menu for the Atkins folks.

We follow Weightwatchers and I was astounded that the fat content of every item on Ruby Tuesday's members surpassed an entire week of fat on our program.

A 'broiled' Talapia and broccolli was 96 grams of FAT.

The waiter said, everything is soaked in butter 'lard' which for all the low carb people fits their diet.

Weightwatchers has a lower card option for their program so you can still eat sensibly if you're carb sensitive.

My mom did Atkins in the 70's and peed on a little Ketone stick to check for Ketosis. That's when your body is 'burning up the fat'.
We ate greasy cheese burgers and blocks of colby cheese.

BTW.. DR. Atkins himself died with majorly clogged arteries.

Anyone think Scarsdale will resurge next.. lol

Thought you meant Clay Aiken.
Shows how much you know about Atkins when you can't even spell it. Saying low carb lifestyle is dying due to a new cola survey is ridiculous. I doubt anyone serious about a low carb diet would touch either one of those colas in the first place.
Low carb products don't determine the market, low carb consumers do.

He and others have been demonstrating for 25odd years that that is just not the case.

Of course, I'm speaking in generalities here, not Mcdonalds specifically. Let's face it, the "food" at micky d's is cheap for a reason

There is a lot of research that suggests that the low carb lifestyle may not be all that healthy in the long run. You need a sufficient amount of carbs to burn energy. On Aikens, carbs are replaced with fats. Too much fat causes high cholesterol, which can lead to heart disease.

Weight loss is not a difficult thing to figure out. Eat fewer calories than you take in. Over time, your body will burn the stored fat as energy and you will lose weight.

I agree with everything you just said, but quit calling it aikens

You are totally right, it's a permanent lifestyle change.

Also, the induction phase does work, AND you keep losing fat until you meet or exceed your maintenance level.

There are doctors debating this day in an day out who know far more than you and I ever will.

I've read the book, I have looked at the studies, have you?

His diet has been proven to lower bad cholesterol, lower blood sugar levels..the list goes on.

Yeah it is a fad right now...but it's also something that has been around for decades and is backed up by science.

Atkins isn't a fad diet.
It's a lifestyle change and it does work and it's not an easy change either to those of you who think it's an "easy fast weight loss solution" It's not, I've tried it and I know many many people who are successful with it, I wasn't because I can't afford it right now with a family of 6 - I'd go on it again if/when I could.

I lost 40 pounds doing Atkins...the problem was I wasn't getting any real support from my family here.

And by that I mean I would tell them that they needed to get rid of the birthday cake after a birthday party...but they would leave it around for days on end.

Or they would buy a bunch of ice cream, come home from the grocery store with tons of cookies and candy the list goes on.

I don't have many addictions but I will be more than willing to admit sweets is one I do have....it's a real big issue with me.

I know I will probably get flamed and called weak etc...say what you will but it's a deep issue that I struggle with all the time.

I tried not to impose my new lifestyle on them, but they didn't respect me...I liken it to living with an alcoholic or drug addict and leaving booze and drugs around.

I went for 3 months without any processed sugars that I know of...and then I had a moment of weakness.and then that led to a 2nd and so on.

In the end it's my fault, but if I were to demand that that kind of stuff not be brought into my house I'm sure those posting here would tell me I'm trying to force my lifestyle on them.

I was talking about bad breath

and as far as obesity is concerned- it isn't something you are born with , yuo may be genetically predisposed to being heavy - but yuo have to admit what got you there was a sedintary lifestyle- and eating more calories a day than you burned off-

Actually, I have done research. The thing I hate most about the Atkins diet is that most of the weight you lose during induction is lean muscle mass, not fat. When you gain the weight back, you don't gain the muscle, so you end up being FATTER than you were before, in spite of the fact that you weigh the same. Here's an interesting read about Atkins:

What does the brain need to function? Glucose.

What do muscles need in order to stay strong and healthy? Glucose.

What is in a carb? Glucose.

If people are losing weight, they need to look no further than their muscles. Muscles weigh more than fat, and once those atrophe, the pounds just fly off!

Maybe carbs do put weight on, but fatty foods cause heart attacks....Don't they Mr. Atkins! He sure didn't have a healthy heart, but at least he was a twig.

Atkins pushes a lifestyle change...there are numerous books and cookbooks to take you through all steps clear to the life time maintenance plan.
Exactly No where have I read or heard about how you are supposed to stuff yourself silly ONLY on fatty cheeseburgers, or steak or bacon, or that it is a quick fix for anything. In fact just the opposite is true, but people will only see and get from it what they want to.

Your post is in conflict, your first line is exactly what Atkins is about, unfortunately most dieters think there is some magic cure out there, and all these haters probably have no idea what Atkins is all about: daily exercise, eat less, eat healthy, less sugar, less breads, it's not a magic diet it's just a healthier way to live.

Eat a balanced diet.
Include all food groups, not just some.
Variety of veggies
Whole grains
Fruit, fruit juice from concentrate
Lean meats
EXERCISE regularly

And to hell with atkins.

End of story.

Well, despite that simple theory, US still has a major obesity problem.

Most don't want the lifestyle change that comes with the fatkins diet either. The plan I layed out is the one that has been touted by food experts and health care officials for centuries, it has stood the test of time since humans walked the Earth. Period.

All the atkins diet and other fads like it do is appeal to overweight people who are unwilling to exercise. These diets claim that diet, not exercise, is the answer, when that couldn't be farther from the truth.

The sad fact for overweight people is this: You need to exercise. Coupled with a SENSIBLE FUCKING DIET, it is the ultimate weight loss plan.

Aerobic exercise is great, but even a few long walks per week, maybe throw in the odd bike ride..... how about a walk to the store instead of driving?..... that's enough exercise to make a difference in one's life. It doesn't have to be a 5 mile run every morning.
