Better yet this "InsightExpress" (who the fuck are they? The next diet gurus?) said that the "fad" (Aikens did die centuries ago!) was dying based on their survey that showed last December 11% of Americans were on a low carb diet. Now only 10% are on a low carb diet. Man..that is a HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE plunge in dieters ain't it?

The main problem for all fad diets is that they don't teach you to change your lifestyle. Going ON a diet implies that you will one day go OFF the diet. Once you go OFF the diet, you usually go right back to eating the foods that got you fat in the first place. In order to succeed in the long haul, you need to CHANGE YOUR LIFESTYLE PERMANENTLY.

People on Aikens either (1) stay on induction for too long a period and ruin their health, or (2) go right back to their old eating habits and gain all the weight back they originally lost.
Earth to BOOBmaster!
1) It's ATKINS..not Aikens!
2) When you go off ANY diet, you'll put on weight! What an idiotic statment to make!
3)Atkins IS about lifestyle change.
4)And NO people don't stay on induction too long or go right back to old eating habits.

Talk to those who are honestly serious about Atkins and you will find people that have been on it for years, and are eating healthy foods as well as excercising.

It's fascinating to me to see so many Atkins "haters" on this board. Not sure why those who don't even have a clue about it are always trying to "poo poo" it.

Yeah it is a fad right now...but it's also something that has been around for decades and is backed up by science.
Even the American Heart Assocation in their study from about one year ago found that the low carb diet was better for the heart over one year's period of time as opposed to the low fat diet.

Now COMBINE the two and you've got a winning combo! And it IS possible to do that.

Most people that tell you atkins is bad can normally be found eating Pizza and Coke.

It always amazes me why the "anti-Atkins" crowd seems to take it so personal that other people do it.

Oh wait...No it doesn't. It is like anything, if it requires work, those that do not want to put out the work complain to those that do.

I either play full court basketball or lift weights at lunch followed by sauteed chicken + Vegitables + salad with Ranch.

For dinner, I surf for an hour. I then usually have a sandwich with bread.

Carbs are fine, but not a lot of them. I used to have this guy at my old office condemn me for not getting the rice with my lunch and he was always falling asleep around 3pm.

Here is an idea: do what is right for you and leave everyone alone. I think low carb is fine and I am likely in better shape and health than most people posting against the diet!

Everything is work!

When you gain the weight back, you don't gain the muscle, so you end up being FATTER than you were before, in spite of the fact that you weigh the same. Here's an interesting read about Atkins:

http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/venuto1.htm
Hmm..must be reading upside down or something if you "learned" that "fact". During induction..your body burns CARBS..and thusly the reason the diet works. Once the carbs are burnt up, you then burn up FAT..not muscle!

Yeah, the old/current food pyramid recommends like 11 servings a day of bread, pasta, etc. All that starchy stuff that tastes great, but sticks to ya like glue!

Not true! Your body will burn both. Whenever you limit your calories, you will lose some muscle. Your body will only burn so much fat per day. Believe me, if there was a way around this, some bodybuilding guru would have made millions marketing it by now.

I don't have to believe you. I am living that lifestyle and I have what both my general doc & endocrinologist are telling me.
KEEP IT UP! Blood sugar back to normal, weight is comming off and it was FAT, not muscle, blood pressure is 110/70 and cholesterol is back in the normal/good range. I've never been healthier in my life.

Yet you, who has never have been on this diet wants to tell me and my docs that we/us are wrong...interesting.

the best way to lose fat quickly other than drugs is with a high fat diet(also called carb loading). which is 5 days of under 30g of carbs and then 2 days of pigging out on carbs

People that call Atkins a fad first really dont know what they are talking about. Its been around for over twenty years. Also people that call it the eat bacon and cheeseburgers diet once dont know a thing. My father has had three heart attacks after the last one they gave him a bypass. At 60 he is was starting look like a old man he was doing that low fat bullshit and not getting betterfeeling tired all the time. I told my mother get him to go low carb it will add 20 yrs to his life. He has lost 40 lbs , he now exercises on a daily basis. He no longer needs BP meds. He says he has more energy now then he did 20 yrs ago and he looks 10 yrs younger and he eats more green veggies then he has in yrs.

imo for long term a balanced diet is best. higher fat/protein *may* cause an increase chance of cancer.

the body needs carbs, just stay away from the shit

Don't know what your agenda is but you are just plain wrong on your facts.

When a person goes on a crash diet they will lose weight by consuming muscle mass because there in not enough sugar to keep the body going.

When a person goes on a low carb diet the body converts stored body fat into sugar which supplies all the energy needed. Hence there is no reason to consume muscle mass.

So you are wrong.

Get the book and learn what you are talking about.

it is possible to limit excess sugar in processed food and limit the amount of bread, pasta, spuds you eat without going full into Atkins. I know that i react badly to all the sugar pumped into jared sauces, etc so I stay away from them. I also know that if I eat pasta (even though I love it) I will get a craving for more and I will also feel like passing out from lack of energy about 20 minutes later.

So, I tried Atkins a few times and I did lose weight but the second time I tried it I was also on metformin and i don't know if they conflicted but if I ate more than a handful of veggies in a day I would throw up. Well, that just isn't right. So, instead it is just about cooking things from scratch rather than using a sauce from a jar. Really, it is usually cheaper anyway, tastes better and takes little time and you know what goes into it. Doing Atkins in the past did help to break me from needing bread at every lunch time, etc but I didn't lke all the fat and puking when I ate veggies.

For some people the drastic method works but there is a middle ground. If you react badly to carbs and the TON of excess sugar in processed foods then just start limiting them and still enjoy the good carbs in veggies and fruit. Sure, it means my weight is coming of alot slower but hopefully it will stay off too.

You are so full of shit. I notice people like you never back your shit up. I have seen documentaries about the atkins diet, where some of the biggest doubters actually got off their asses and did their own tests, experiements and researches, and were dumbfounded by the results. Some of these guys are now the biggest advocates of the atkins diet around!

Find me credible evidence that it causes heart attacks, and i'll eat your ass with a spoon.

The diet really does work. Eat until you're satisfied, and not to excess. You feel fuller faster with low carb meals, and that's the trick. Simple as that. You end up consuming less calories because you don't need to eat as much as if you were on a high carb diet.

Numbers are dropping because people want instant results. People don't follow diets correctly, or they expect too much too soon. This is to be expected. I bet the numbers are similar, or even worse for the majority of diets.

The diet works even better if you cut out most of the fat. The fat basically slows things down. It just adds calories, and also makes you crave more food. That's something they seriously need to revise in the atkins diet, actually. Recent research has shown that the only reason the diet works is the fact that protein is an appetite suppressant. The fat just basically means you don't have to compromise on the taste. But if you're prepared to go without it, then even better.

yeah, so what I just said about cutting out or seriously limiting pasta, bread and spuds (along with sugary processed foods) is pretty much the same thing but it doesn't tip my body into a place where I really was being sick after meals.

i know what i'm talking about. the atkins diet is a variation of what bodybuilders use to use before they started pumping clen into their bodies.

high protein/fat diets may lead to an increase chance of cancer. too much of a good thing. maybe it won't make much of a difference for someone like a woman who eats under 3k cals a day, but for some people in the 5k+ area it very well could increase the chances. too much of a good thing, works with almost anything.

you obviously don't know what you're talking about. go do some research at a university library.
