Work Out Injury.... Need Advice.

I decided to work out for the first time in my life on Thursday. I was doing calf presses off a ledge. I only did 8 sets of 30 but the next day the hurt was on and today (which isn't logical because it's been MORE time) I got out of bed and took my first step and thought I was going to die. Anything I can do for this and how long does it take to go away?

I seriously can't get around without leaning on furniture and grabbing walls.

its gonna take 2-3 days maybe even longer if this is your 1st time working out, it's not an "injury" by any means, working out causes your muscles to rip and tear, so you're going to be sore for a while afterwards until the body can fix/replace the effected muscles. Stretch REALLY good before and after workouts and also stretch before you go to bed and in the morning when you get it, it won't cure it but it will help speed the recovery process along

I got some bad news tomorrow will be even worse. Somedays my calfs get sore after soccer (eventhough I have been playing for years now.) I soak in hot water always helps me.

it's normal... the muscles you work hard will often feel weak that day and the day after, its 48 hours *AFTER* when the real pain should kick in.... no worries...

Hot epsom salt bath ( if your gym has a whirlpool use it )

then go to the drug store and by some muscle pain relieving patches called " Solonpas " they are in a green white and blue box... apply a patch as instructed.... also try rubbing your calves real fast (not deep) that will cause a blood flow, and increase the healing time...

8 sets of 30 for the first time working out is a lot too much. Hell, even for someone who's been working out for awhile, typically 3 or 4 sets is all that's needed.

Anyhow, the second day after the workout is always worse than the first. I'd recommend stretching as much as you can, even though it hurts like a son of a bitch. Also, I'd make sure you hydrate yourself well (water) and take a couple ibuprofen as necessary.

Next time you go to the gym, take it easy for the first couple of weeks and let your body adjust before increasing your workout regimen. I'm not a personal trainer or anything, but I have hired one. If you go to a gym who has personal trainers available, I'd highly recommend talking to one about a workout strategy to get whatever it is accomplished that you want to accomplish. Often you get one free consulation to go over a possible workout routine(s), diet, supplements, vitamins, yadda yadda yadda..

Hope you're feeling better soon

I have been doing pilates on the exercise ball for a week now and I already see a difference. It's low impact but it works great! Maybe you should start with doing yoga or pilates to get your body used to working out. Then after a month or so go onto weight lifting or whatever it is that you want to do. You can't just get off your butt after sitting on it for however many months etc.. Your body is not used to doing much work thus the hurt. Take it slowely and you'll be just fine and happy with the results Making yourself hurt doesn't mean you'll see results And I cannot stress this enough...READ!! As much as you can about exercising and eating right!

It's always nice to hear that u've taken the intiative to start working out...Problem is, you've gone over board...8 of 30 sets???
Who told u to do that??? 3 sets of 20 reps is plenty for one exercise.

Try doing some cardio first and use light weights until ur body becomes accustomed to working out and then maybe u should consider taking classes or getting a trainer. Sounds like u don't have a clue what ur doing.

As for ur calves right now, they're not injured. It's called DELAYED ONSET MUSCLE SYNDROM...and today and tomorrow will be painful for u. Nothing u can do about it... Just be glad u haven't woken up in the middle of the night with cramps..

I do have a slight clue what I'm doing, I'm just over anxious to get going on this new found desire to work out. I'm infamous for "overkill" when I find something I like. I am just obviously out of shape. Just doing 70 sit ups killed my abs. I did the 8 sets (10 feet straight one, 10 toes turned in, 10 toes pointed out) spread out through out the day, I didn't do them all at once. Lesson learned but I have to find something that doesn't bore me... pilates bores me to death. I can't do high impact.... Can anyone recommend a work out tape/dvd? My goal isn't to lose any weight, I'm 105 and don't want to be any thinner. My goal is to beef up my lower legs as much as possible (I would love to double their size, they are toothpicks) and just tone up my arms and torso.

Funny thing is, it's easier to walk in my sandals with 2.5 inch heels because it's taking the pressure off the muscle I pissed off.

8 sets of 30 is very excessive for your first time. It's just muscle soreness. They sell this cream called myoflex that works real good for muscle soreness, should be able to find it at walmart or a drug store.

no matter how long you've been working out... when you take some time off from doing that work out... your first few days to first week is always going to be a "hey what the hell are you doing to me?" reaction from your body.

recovery time?? depends on how much time off you took in between work outs...

usually..
less than 3 months... takes a couple of days...
3-6 months... at least 5 days...
6 or more.... you can expect it to take a good week and a half.

but that's just me and the way my body works.
i have pretty good "muscle memory"... so it doesn't take long for me to see results when i decide it's time to start training again... and i'm like you... i tend to be a bit anxious in the beginning.....

well... in any event... good luck with getting around.... try soaking... and massage the muscles when you can...(its going to hurt like hell but do it anyway)
