You have to be careful of that diet. Its all well and good while you are on it, but eventually if you decide to get off it you may gain back all of that weight. It happened to an uncle of mine in CA, he was on it for like two years, got mad skinny, then recently he stopped doing it and he ended up being bigger than he ever was before.

They should make like a coming off atkins diet program so you dont get fuckt up, unless you want to on it for the rest of your life.

That much weight in 2 weeks? Had you not said 'Atkins' I would seriously be worried.

As a long time bodybuilder I've seen all kinds of weight loss gimmicks.

The truth is it's not 'weight' you wanna lose, it's 'fat'. That comes from burning up more fat building calories than you take in.

Atkins diet is very recommended regardless of the jealous competition quips.

If you're hitting the gym 5x a week, that's real courage and determination.

Always have your doctor handy and follow his advice when exercising. Pretty soon you'll be so happy you did you will never slack off again.

Age has nothing to do with strength and stamina. There are guys in their 80s who can run circles around guys in their 20s. It's a matter of a healthy mental attitude FIRST and good diet, rest and somebody to snuggle with.

But that's just it, there is no coming off of Atkins. It's an entire lifestyle change. When one follows the diet the way it's written out, one slowly learns how to eat and what to eat to avoid getting fat again.

It's not easy, but nothing in life worth having is ever easy to obtain.

Eat a lot of citrus fruits... it might give you heartburn (like me), but it hates fat and the citric acid burns it like gasoline.

Yay, you made it through induction! Congrats! Atkins is THE diet. Let me give you a secret or two. Now that you're past induction, you have GOT to try the new sugar-free candies out there.

Pure De-lite bars are AWESOME and they taste JUST LIKE sugared chocolate. No joke, they are teriffic. Also, there are now sugar-free Hershey bars and sugar-free Reeces that taste the same as the real thing, too! OMG, they come out with new sugar-free stuff every day that just blows my mind.

Also, if you're a soda freak, Diet Vanilla Coke and Diet Dr. Pepper are the closest to the real thing as you can get with diet. And diet IBC Root Beer is pretty darned good for diet, too.

Oh, and look for Davinci sugar-free syrups at Wal-Mart near the Millstone coffee section. The Hazlenut and Vanilla flavors are indespensible for sweetening low-carb desserts and they're made with liquid sucralose which is better for you than aspartame and has less of the sugar-substitute aftertaste because it's actually made from real sugar. It makes some delicious low-carb ice cream! Just mix a pint of heavy whipping cream and three eggs (pasturized) together and blend until thick, then add the vanilla syrup until sweeted as you like it. Then freeze, stirring very often. If you go to Davinci's website, they have DOZENS of flavors, too! Chocolate, cherry, toasted marshmallow, coconut, french vanilla, and EGGNOG. Mmmm!

Also, if you like meatloaf, make it with crushed pork rinds instead of bread crumbs. If you get the totally carb free pork rinds, you can use them as breading on your friend chicken and such, too. They add a wonderful quality to meatloaf. There is also a good sugar-free ketchup in the diet foods section of most supermakets. Estee brand. Tastes just like regular ketchup. Excellent for meatloaf.

If you like rice and also like cauliflower, you can grate cauliflower with a grater and sautee it about 5 minutes in some butter and it makes an excellent substitute for rice.

One other thing I can think of. Parmesan cheese (the good brands like Kraft) are ZERO carb. Use it to bread meats before frying if you don't like pork rinds. Cube steaks and boneless chicken breasts are excellent made this way. Just dip in beaten egg then roll in parmesan cheese to coat thoroughly and fry or bake as you normally would. It is SO good!

One last thing. A wonderful low-carb dessert. Take one pint of heavy whipping cream and whip with 2/3 cup water and a package of sugar-free Jello butterscotch (or vanilla) pudding until thick and creamy. Don't whip too long or you get butter! Then carefully fold in one can of pumpkin. Make sure you use the natural canned pumpkin and NOT the pumpkin pie filling! Season with a tiny bit of nutmeg and sweeten to taste with Davinci syrup. I recommend the eggnog for this, but vanilla is good, too.

Keep it up. Atkins will definately work for you, just stick with it and congratulations on your progress, so far!

I want to get down to between 200 to 210, could be a little higher depends on how much muscle I put back on with muscle memory. My body doesnt deal with processed carbs well, if I eat alot of carbs I feel like I am stoned and I am hungry every hour like a bottomless pit. So this will be my way of life, lots of veggies and fish, chicken, sometimes beef . I have to be like a alcoholic and stay away from pasta, bread and processed carbs for the rest of my life, genetically I am not like thin people so I cant follow their eating habits. No matter how thin I get , there will always be a fat person trying to get out, I will keep him at bay. I have lost 100's lbs in my life and this is my goal line stand once and for all. My father gave me congrats and said to me remember " A man who has control over himself, has control over the world". I put that on my wall to remind me to keep up the fight.

Congrats Tony! Keep it up. A lot of the first weeks' weight loss is water (carbs retain a lot of water in your digestive system).

I would just suggest trying to limit the saturated fats, and get as much low carb veggies, and low fat meats as possible. A daily fiber suppliment also helps the Atkins constipation.

No matter how skinny you get, you'll always have to run like hell from bread, pasta and potatoes to keep that way !

Whoops, I do NOT recommend eating low fat on this diet! Dr. Atkins specifically says that the higher percentage of fat in your diet, the faster you will lose. Eat as much fat as possible. Without the carbohydrates the cholesterol will NOT be produced/stored by your body.

Also, drink as much water as humanly possible. Dr. Atkins says that the more pure water you drink, the faster you will lose, also.

You can't stop after two years. This just like any other diet is a change in lifestyle. Your uncle should read the book "atkins for life"

You have to be careful of what type of baseball caps you wear and how you were them too. I know because I have an uncle in N.Y. who like wore this great cap for like you know almost a year. And then one day he bought a different cap, and different color. He decided to you know, wear it backwards too! But he decided to go back to his old cap cuz, you know, he liked the color better. But the first time he wore this old cap and took it off, HE HAD TWO HEADS POP UP!

My Aunt is so distraught! She told me "Why didn't he just wear that one hat all the time? Look what happened to him!"

I HIGHLY recommend L-carnatine supplements, also. I've known two people that stalled on the diet and their weight loss resumed after beginning an L-carnatine supplement.

Good alternatives to rice, potatoes, pasta and bread? Especially bread? Recent introductions of stuff like 'carb free bread' are no use because they aren't available here so what are good, readily available alternatives? It's the only thing that's put me off trying it.

Yeah, right. My friend had to lose over 150 pounds and he tried that horseshit. He ate nothing but lettuce with no dressing, carrots and drank only water for almost a month. He lost a grand total of 3 pounds and collapsed from exhaustion from lack of calories and ended up in the hospital for 4 days. Why the hell would anyone subject themselves to hospitalization and food depravation to lose 3 pounds a month when one can eat wonderful foods like steak, cheeseburgers and ice cream on the Atkins diet and lost 15+ pounds per month. Let's see, 10 months to lose 150 pounds or several YEARS? Hmm.

Some people think they know it all. *sigh*

Fat people get fat because of many different reasons. Pregnancy, thyriod disease, hormone imbalance, and yes, overeating. But so what? Does one give some ludicrous way for alcoholics to overcome the addiction from drinking too much alcohol. "Just don't drink and any acoholic can sober up." DUH! Not.

G'head and try to quit smoking, drinking, snorting cocaine, or whatever other unhealthy habit YOU have with advice like you just gave and see how far YOU get!

Rice and potatoes can be substituted with cauliflower and turnips. Both vegetables taste WORLD's better with butter and heavy cream added.

There are low carb pastas and low carb breads that can be ordered online. Also, Dr. Atkins Bake Mix (for making pancakes, breads, muffins, etc) can be bought at just about any GNC. Most GNC's also carry his sugar-free pancake syrup, muffin mix and other stuff. His peanut butter cups are wonderful (albiet expensive). Low carb bread is hard to find locally because it has to be refrigerated. You can order it online from atkins.com and it will get shipped to you frozen in a styfoam container with dry ice. His site also sells cheesecakes, pastas, pasta sauces, low-carb condiements like BBQ sauce and ketchup (although the Estee ketchup in the diet foods section of the grocery store is better than his) and all kinds of stuff.

Also, if you REALLY, REALLY get a craving for potatoes or bread on occasion, there are starch blocker pills you can take that will convert about 80-90% of a meal's STARCH carbs to a non-absorbable form. Phase-2 pills can be bought at GNC or Wal-Mart. I don't recommend this because after being on the diet a couple of weeks you find that carbs make you feel sick anyway, but if you're in a pinch and about to cheat, these can really help. Just remember, they WON'T block sugar carbs, just starch.

Thank you all for your support ,you are all too cool. When someone had mentioned giving up drugs. On the Poison, Behind The Music, CC Deville was a heroin adict , when he gave it up he put on 70 lbs. He said losting the 70 lbs was harder the kicking the heroin habit. Thats something to think about.

Uhm. I think people don't realize Atkins has different stages.. The last stage is healthy eating - the keep your current weight, and not lose more stage..

As long as you don't go to full out carbohydrate food and stop excercising, you won't gain too much back.

Cheers,
Matt

Just keep in mind that most of the weight people lose initially is just water weight.

For every gram of glycogen (carbohydrate) stored intramuscularly, three grams of water are stored.

When you start reducing carbs, you reduce glycogen stores as well, hence the water weight loss.

It's the same principle (in reverse) with creatine, force more ATP to be stored and you'll increase your bodyweight (due to intramuscular water retention) as well.

Actually, what he said was correct.
The reason your friend didn't lose weight but did end up in the hospital is quite simple: if you don't eat enough, your body will perceive it as a period of low food supplies, and try to retain as much fat and such as possible. In other words, it kills your metabolism.

However, replacing high caloric foods with low caloric ones and exercising a lot will help your metabolism speed up, and will help you lose weight quite quickly.

My wife and I are thinking about doing Atkins, but you're not allowed to have aspartame.

I don't think I can live without Diet Coke. (I'm drinking one right now.)

I agree with you, the first day I lost 12 lbs which then stabilized. What happens is once your in ketosis it really blunts your appetite. So you are taking in alot less calories I have forgotten to eat a couple times and meal times used to be a big part of my day. So if I ate 4000 to 5000 calories a day, I now avg 2400 with 5 days of cardio and weight lifting a week. The weight is going to come off. I found it funny Al Roker talked about the stomach surgery and the weight he lost and now he workouts 5-6 x times a week. I wonder if he just worked out 5-6x a week , how much weight he would lost, without the surgery.

Try diet Rite soda. There's no aspartame in it, it's made with sucralose instead. I've gotten addicted to it since I started Atkins.

Also, check GNC for Atkins stuff or order it online. The Advantage bars were indispensible!

Aspartame is really bad for you. Diet RC and Diet Rite are sweetened with Splenda instead

I'm going to be trying Atkins in a week or two myself. I'm getting ready to go see my mom for 5 days and she's feeding me and I don't know what she's going to feed me. I just got the book and it's very interesting. My brother started the program in January and has lost 50 pounds. I would love to have 50 off by like Thanksgiving or Xmas, really shock the relatives that don't see me except at those times. Splenda is a great sweetner, it's made from sugar and tastes like it too. I bought decaf iced tea and I'm going to sweeten it with that. I don't drink pop anyway. I do love milk so that will be a hard one. I really love, bread, pasta, rice, and potatoes but I can pick up some no carb bread and hopefully find an alternative for the others. Glad everyone is doing so well on it, wish me luck!

I really think its hard for most people to stay on the Atkins diet indefinitely though. Everyone I know who stopped gained the weight back as fast as they lost it.

The formula to lose weight is really a simple one. It doesn't matter so much what you eat but that you just burn more calories than you consume every day. The best way to burn calories is working out in one way or another and cut your meal portions in half. I tried the gym routine and really got sick of the sweat stench in those places. The best thing that worked for me was doing long walks and runs everyday. I was able to drop 30 lbs by doing 6 miles per day.

If you want to lose weight very fast buy a wrestlers sweat suit and run the stairs in a high rise building.

neewwman, Diet Rite is made with sucralose, not aspartame. If you can't have aspartame, you can definately have Diet Rite. I actually like Diet Rite better than Diet Coke, I just like Diet Vanilla Coke better than either.

Sucralose is made from sugar (just turned into a non-digestible form that does not have calories or effect blood glucose levels. Look for items made with sucralose (many have a logo on the front with sucralose's brand name, Splenda on the front).

Best price on Atkins Advantage Bars - $1.79 at Trader Joes. Occassionally, someone might have a better sale price but that's TJ's everyday price. They also have the shakes and other low carb stuff ...

Best of luck, Laura!

Oh, and as for the milk. Keep your eyes peeled at your local Wal-Mart. LeCarb, the makers of LeCarb low-carb ice cream, have released a low-carb dairy drink that people say tastes very much like regular milk. It's called LeCarb Dairy Drink or something like that. It's very new. In fact, I believe it IS regular milk with the lactose (sugar) removed and replaced with a carb free sweetener of some sort, maybe sucralose? I don't remember for sure. We haven't gotten it here, yet, but it's in some supermarkets and Wal-Marts in my state, so hopefully it will be here very, very soon!

Thanks!

I tried the low fat, light, type of diet where I went to the gym 3 to 5 times a week, but I have multiple injuries. I have 6 buldging disks and every disk in my neck is degenerated. I had broke my foot and now have a screw in there. Also had knee surgery and shoulder surgery. I'm falling apart I tell ya lol. My point is, exercise is very hard for me. I can walk a few miles a day when I get time and if the weather cooperates. I just mowed the grass and that is a chore in itself. But the Atkins is really going to help me because if I can get just 10 or 20 pounds off and gradually take some weight off then I will and can be more active. Walking 2 miles about kills me. People who haven't had a back or neck injury and someone that doesn't have a weight problem wouldn't know what this is like. Just walking through the grocery store hurts me by the time it is over. I've kept the weight off that I lost from going to the gym during the winter but once I level out like this then the pressure starts again on my disks. I'm not just doing it for looks, I'm mainly doing it for pain control.

Pure De-Lite bars as soooo much better than the Advantage bars. Atkins has wonderful peanut butter cups, but the Pure De-Lite bars are alot better than Atkins' other products. They sell the Pure De-Lite bars at my local Wal-Mart in boxes of 6 for $5.17! Woohoo! I recommend the chocolate caramel truffle bars.

Laura - I thought giving up milk would be really tough too. I used to drink at least a half gallon a day. But I don't miss it all.

That would be wonderful! I really hate our Walmart here but sometimes you just HAVE to go there for certain products that no one else seems to carry. My brother goes to walmart to get all of his lowcarb goodies. He told me that they carry all kinds of Atkins things and at a lower cost than anyone, I'm gonna have to check it out. Low carb milk, hmmm, well I like soy milk too, so maybe it will be like that. Here's to hoping.
