Police defend decision to cite man who rushed into burning apartment to save dog

Staff Writer

Metro police said today they were right to cite a man who rescued his dog from a burning apartment building in West Nashville last night.

Jarrod T. Martin, 26, who lived in the apartments, was handcuffed, held by officers and cited for disorderly conduct and reckless endangerment, but was not booked into the Metro Jail after entering the burning building, and throwing his dog to safety.

The Metro Police Department received 10 telephone calls this morning and others throughout the day from people who were watching television footage captured by a bystander and aired on local television stations, said Don Aaron, police spokesman.

Letters were also sent to The Tennessean from outraged readers who had dubbed Martin a ''hero,'' and who were concerned that Martin was taken into custody.

Attempts to reach Martin today have been unsuccessful.

Fire officials said Martin used a fireman's hook pole to break the window of his apartment at 6565 Premiere Drive, then entered the smoke-filled apartment room. The fire at the Premier West Apartment complex started last night around 6:20 p.m.

Martin put firefighters in danger by entering the building, diverted their attention from the blaze, and could have caused a ''back draft,'' a flash fire caused by a sudden rush of oxygen, said Assistant Chief Kim Lawson, spokeswoman for the Nashville Fire Department.

Fire officials and police had warned Martin it was too dangerous to go to the apartment and told him not to go inside, but he went anyway, Lawson and police said.

Martin received a minor cut but was otherwise uninjured, officials said.

It is probable that fire officials would have been able to save the dog after the blaze was batted down, but were unable to do that at the time Martin entered the burning building, Lawson said.

whatever, I agree the guy was a moron. He endangered his life, and the lives of fireman when he did that. It worked out, thank god, but what if it hadn't?

What if we were reading the story about the guy that broke in to his burning apartment to save his dog, started a backdraft, killing himself and 3 firefighters?

I doubt we'd be calling him a hero then.

I think buddies real problem with the law was the 12 prior warrants out for his arrest. They found those when they ran a background check on him. He likely would have got off if it wasn't for that little oops. And if I was a fireman, i wouldn't wanna risk my ass for a dog. I love dogs, but not gonna die for one.

I've never met a cop I could stand. There has to be something different about them mentally for them to choose that career path.

I know two guys that I went to school with that pursued careers in law enforcement. One was a dick who always had to be the centre of attention, and the other one was the type of person that was small and scrawny and always got picked on and overlooked by the ladies. I'd wager every cop out there would fit into one of those two categories.

One of my favourite memories was when a local arrogant police officer's wife got caught stealing narcotics from my parent's health care facility where she worked.

I'd always give him a big smile and wave after that. Not so mouthy now, are ya pig.

Do you have a dog? I do. I have him since he was 5 weeks old, when could barely walk, he's 1 & 1/2 now sleeping by my feet as I write this. I grew up with a dog from age 5 to 22. I loved my dog, and yeah i would risk my life for my dog. But as a fireman, i would not risk my life to save some rednecks' pitbull.

Sit down with the widow of a firefighter and his orphaned children who died because you opebned a window and caused a huge backdraft while trying to save your dog and see if this story carries the same weight. If this guy ran into a burning building before the firemen arrived, ok - that's cool. Once they show up, let them do their job.

I love pets, but the value of a human life is far greater.

This guy put the rescue workers in peril, and we're just the results weren't tragic.

We had a housefire when I was 9 and the firefighters went into the house to save a dog as soon as they were aware of it. Even did breathing treatments on it. If the firefighters didn't want to go in they should have backed the fuck up and let him do it alone. I would have went after my dog for a fact.

Doesn't seem to me like the situation was that bad after all if Martin only had a minor cut after.. tells me some firefighter may have been just pansy enough. That's exactly what the man said on the news... his dog was part of his family and there was no way he was going to let part of his family die. ...and when he heard they didn't have much water left to fight the fire..he jumped in and out and brought the dog to safety.

I have been following this story all weekend. I cannot believe the man got arrested for that. The fire was coming close to his apt, which they said it wasnt, and the dog was standing right at the door. I wasnt like they would have had to go inside to get the dog. Right when the guy broke his slider door, the dog jumped into his arms. Its another incident where fireman and police arent doing their jobs. They are getting paid to pretend like they are useful. A dog is a mans best friend and I would have done the same thing. I think once this si all over the man should sue the police and the fire dept.

I would have done the same, but I still understand the Firemen's position. Getting arrested would have been worth it to me if it saved my dog's life. Thankfully none of the firefighters got hurt because of this, thoug.

my dad was a cop...
and though i have had to deal with some assholes, for the most part, they are doing their job.

one time, i was let off on a minor incident. 19, doing 85mph in a 55 mph zone, and blew the breath test. i was honest with him, told him i had been drinking (i wasnt falling all over the place, just had to pee really bad) and he just wrote me up for speeding.

and i dont think its cause im a girl. cause i have never been let off any of the other times i have been pulled over.

i know, i would not want to be around if there were no cops. esp this close to detroit.
then again, i know my dad wouldnt hesitate to shoot anybody who tried to fuck with us
