I got home from the hospital

...about an hour ago What a miserable...fucking...day. I arrived at 6:00 AM as called for. I was booked in and prepped for surgery which took two full hours. Surgery began at 8:00 AM and ended at around 11:15. I was taken to a recovery room where I spent the next number of hours flat on my back and was told not to move or lift my head. During those hours at some point two nurses came in and told me they were there to remove a tube that was intentionally left in to plug the entry point of an artery in my groin. They fucked it up and I began to bleed...not outside my skin but on the inside. One of them...one strong bitch...applied pressure by hand on my groin...they called in a third nurse to assist them and the next hour they worked feverishly to get my blood pressure down to a level that the could repair the damage. This hurt like a son of a bitch on top of the severe pain I suffer with 24/7. They got things repaired and told me I would have to continue laying flat on my back...not moving...and not to lift my head...until 6:30 PM. My back is the major cause of the pain I suffer with 24/7 and I normally cannot lay down more than a couple of hours at best before my back starts screaming...which it did after a couple of hours. I tell the nurse that I cannot lay there until 6:30 so she had to go to plan B. She did not have a plan B and said I just had to bear it.

At 5:00 PM I started yelling out and a nurse came in that had replaced the other nurse because it was time for a shift change. I told the new nurse what had been going on and about my back etc. and that I was going to get up and walk out of the hospital and be damned the consequences and I started to rise and she quickly pushed me back down.

She asked me if being put on my side would help me with the pain in my back. WELL HELL yes it would but the other nurse said I had to be flat on my back...motionless and not to even raise my head. The nurse said no that...I of course be on my side...and not move or lift my head. I then managed to stick it out till 6:30 just to then learn that I could now get out of bed only to sit quietly in a chair or I could use the bathroom which I desperately needed to do...and that I could not get dressed or leave until the Surgeon cane by to see me

At 7:30 he showed up and told me that they wanted to put six stints in me but once they saw a dye map of my arteries...they were to damaged so they only put in four. Basically he said my arteries through out my body are terribly damaged from to many years of smoking and not much of anything can be done about it. He said that maybe they could perform a couple of by passes to my heart when the time comes for it to begin to fail.

I told him no thanks I will work with what I have as long as I have it or can tolerate having it.

I have had 3 angiograms/lower drip arteriograms and 1 Peripheral angioplasty (PA) with stents -- 4 times! You have described that procedure to a tee.

Yes you spend 3 to 6 hours like a turtle on its back -- totally sucks.

The danger is in removing the catheter that is inserted where your groin meets your leg. The whole affair is a miserable procedure. The catheter is removed after the procedure by a surgical nurse and they have to compress the wound by hand and then apply a compression bandage. The femoral artery is the large major artery to your leg. If you hemorrhage internally there you will bleed out quickly.

Smokers, like I was: 2 packs a day/40yrs, are 10 times more likely to develop hardened arteries that have clotting and circulation problems to the legs, pelvis, renal (kidney), heart and brain.

It's called arteriosclerosis and it will kill you before your time.

Sorry your prognosis is not good. They managed to stent 2 places in my right upper femoral artery that were 99% occluded (clotted) cost $44K (chargemaster price) to salvage that leg ... They left some lower rear minor coronary arteries that are blocked closed on my heart and I did grow collateral circulation, the Lexiscan tests proved this out. So, the body can grow new small coronary arteries feeding blood to the heart so as to circumnavigate blood and replace the blocked arteries.

I would consider stenting if the top (main branches) coronary arteries show greater than 80% occlusion (blockage). Open Heart Bypass surgery may come after a heart attack and it requires breaking your ribs to perform open heart surgery. One or two months to recover - - a nasty affair even if all goes well.

They used some kind of twilight drug on me. Wasn?t Demerol though. Only thing I really felt was the balloon pressure when it was inflated. The twilight drug works pretty good on me, I don?t remember much at all except them telling me to hold my breath when they inject the contrast, and the balloon inflation.
I?ve had 3 peripheral angioplasty surgeries and 1 by-pass in the last year and half. Probably will need more PA soon. I think my body is rejecting the stints and blood is clotting at them. I do ok for a month after surgery then my legs start getting blocked again and they have to go back in the same area to clean it out.

They did Cryoplasty for me http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23934945 I specifically asked for that, my cardiologist looked a bit puzzled by the request. That is why it cost $44k? There were 2 doctors/surgeons present and a lot of discussion on the best way to proceed for the two hours in surgery to do one leg in 2 places. Bottom line -- that was two years ago and I have improved in my walking time without IC a lot. Restenosis is common in PAD. So, I think it was the Cryoplasty as I doubt it being just my "good luck" ... I am pretty sure the Doctor said Demerol I was surprised also -- yes the wire snaking in your arteries and the compression of the balloon to the artery wall.

I said stents in error, they just did the Cryoplasty compression. The area was in the upper femoral artery where there is a lot of movement, the surgeon did not want to stent for that reason.

I don't know if my continual use of Plavix (Clopidogrel) and Aspirin 325gr may also be a factor in the lasting result. The success rate is better with the drug-eluting stent (DES) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drug-eluting_stent in the case they are not using them.

When I had my Heart Attacks yes With a S I had the stints put in my leg then my arm then back to my leg when all said and done I have 5 stints, 1 artery was at 98% blocked the lowest was in the 70's but my MAIN one, is 80% so next heart attack guess I will be getting the bypass
