How exactly do you think we, as humans, have gained the knowledge that we now have about the human body and also the animal kingdom? Do you think scientists just randomly came up with theories and tested them only when absolutely necessary (i.e. when someone is about to die?)

Insulin is a pretty good example. For many years it came from pig livers. The pig would need to die in order to extract the insulin. Today most of it seems to come from plants. How many diabetics do you know?

ok, so its time to set a few more things straight. There was ONE financial offer made, and the offer was for the giraffe to stay where it was. Which was unacceptable. Clearly the zoo is more interested in a viable breeding program than in profit. There was ONE offer to take the giraffe, from a zoo in Yorkshire. A zoo which is not part of the overarching body that governs zoos with proper, humane, scientific breeding programs. ie, a zoo which does not meet the requirements for entry into a group that governs zoos. Therefore, not an acceptable place to send the giraffe.
AGAIN, the animal was not "butchered in public", an autopsy was performed. This was deemed a good opportunity to educate the public, both into giraffes and into the science behind these programs. The animal was then butchered behind closed doors and the meat given to other animals just like they are regularly given cow or sheep meat. Autopsies like this provide invaluable information to the ecological efforts to save the more endangered sub species. Killing this one animal has potentially helped the programs in Africa save the last of the Rothschilds Giraffe, which is on the brink of extinction.

I think this thread illustrates the stupidity that are rampant in a modern world where we can all easily communicate. It also illustrates a lot of the things that are wrong with modern media today and how people trust most that's being said by an "official news outlet".

Everyone that knows just a little bit about how things actually works in this world, knows never to take what's being said by the media at face value. Kids who grow up on farms see this all the time. As others have said, kids on farms see this from a very young age. When I was a boy I helped my dad skin and butcher several cows and one pig. I am not ill, I have not hurt anyone, I am a normal, reasonably adjusted, reasonable, rational human being.

The zoo is part of an international program and has several levels of oversight and several committees for any major decision. Do you really honestly believe they do not have the best interest of the animal and the species at heart? Do you really honestly believe that you know more/ better than these people? Do you really honestly believe that every option was not exhaustively researched? And lastly, do you really honestly believe that having read a thread on a porn industry forum, and MAYBE one or two articles, that you know more about what they should have done than they do?

The animal wasn't killed in front of the children it was a dissection of an animal that was going to die. I would take my kid to something like this, it's interesting and millions of animals are killed for food every day. Death is a fact of life.

It's getting to the point where you are being wilfully ignorant. The animal was killed behind a screen, an AUTOPSY was performed for those members of the public who CHOSE to go. The animal was then butchered behind closed doors to be fed to the big cats. It was NOT butchered in front of anyone. Saying otherwise is intentionally lying. As others have said, kids on farms see this from a very young age. When I was a boy I helped my dad skin and butcher several cows and one pig. I am not ill, I have not hurt anyone, I am a normal, reasonably adjusted, reasonable, rational human being. _Richard_- If you bothered to read it has already been explained why neither of these offers were able to be considered. It is discussed in this thread, in several articles, and on the zoo's own site. The best response I think I can give, to gain a little perspective here, is this: People who run the zoo and breeding program have spent more money on, and time in, uni/college than most doctors do, they often have spent more than a year volunteering at game reserves in Africa, their whole lives revolve around the animals that they are looking after. The zoo is part of an international program and has several levels of oversight and several committees for any major decision. Do you really honestly believe they do not have the best interest of the animal and the species at heart? Do you really honestly believe that you know more/ better than these people? Do you really honestly believe that every option was not exhaustively researched? And lastly, do you really honestly believe that having read a thread on a porn industry forum, and MAYBE one or two articles, that you know more about what they should have done than they do? Because I dont. I'm fairly sure that the best person to believe is an expert in their field. If you want legal advice, you go to a lawyer, right? If you want financial advice, you go to an accountant. If you want advice about your pet you go to a vet. The family had to move the house, so they went to a vet and were told their cat would def be hurt and it would be better to kill the animal then take it to another home, and they did.
