If it was an animal that was perceived to be ugly, there would be no outrage.... Just sayin'

It's fundamentally wrong to keep wild animals in captivity.

Want to get your heart ripped out? watch blackfish, the documentary about orca whales kept in captivity.

Thank you!

I love how only one or two people have mentioned the actual issue here. Animals are not meant to be in captivity the only difference in this story is that the Danish have decided to use the opportunity for educational purposes and not just for entertainment value like most North Americans do. Either way, it's a representation of how disgusting and self-involved most humans are.

Zoos, aquariums, drive-through safaris in the middle of Quebec, Lions trapped at the MGM, tigers performing at parties in Saudi...every level of it is inhumane and wrong and I can only hope that incidents like this and movies like Blackfish educate more people on that.

From the place where it is not socially approved for little kids watching animals being butchered in the open publicly.

You very well may be right. Who really knows though. I would hope people that care and donate to those sorts of causes would still find ways to do so, without zoos.

Yes, Americans are easily controlled by the most simplistic diversionary tactics.

Take for example abortion...every election instead of discussing actual facts and problems, politicians bring up abortion, religion and gay rights. Immediately takes all focus off of the real issues and divides the people into controllable and easy to manipulate groups. Classic

Just a note: I don't think that the OP is from the US, but rather some ex-USSR country *shrug* not that I care. I don't have anything against either region, but if I had to pick sides, it sure would not be with the ex-Stalin nutters

There are very few Americans posting in this thread. I see lots of Europeans.

But hey, feel free to continue your American bashing. We are used to it and I generally encourage it, tells me all I need to know about the other party.

Like many charities, that's mostly fluff. The biggest chunk of financial aid that goes into helping wildlife come from wealthy individuals who buy up land to preserve whatever is living on it, not zoos.

All the problems in the world and MILLIONS of hours of productivity are wasted worldwide talking about ONE giraffe? Amazing, just amazing

And its really the parents who should be deciding if its appropriate for their kids to be watching.

I really don't give a shit about many things. I'm ok about many things. I'd probably wouldn't say a word if they simply put the animal to die, but i'm totally against not only the act but the idea of a public autopsy of a huge animal in front of the little children.

The idea itself is nuts, the fact it was taken to the action made me suggest people in Denmark were ill.

This is MY logic, how I can see things.

If it werent for zoos, btw, a lot of animals which are currently endangered, would be extinct. Lets not forget that little fact.

Sid- You missed the point of what I was saying ENTIRELY. And I have no fucking idea what you're talking about with "farmer uprising". But anyway, if kids who live on farms can be perfectly normal and unnaffected by seeing a cow killed, hung up by its back legs, skinned and butchered why is it that seeing LESS THAN THAT would have such a massive effect on other kids? It wouldnt. Its no differant than science class because of the context. You have a guy there with a microphone talking about the animal and what is happening with the autopsy and what they are learning from it the whole time, everyone is calm and professional. Its not like the beast is being tortured by some manic who is painting himself with its blood while screaming profanities. THAT would be confronting. But this is not, it is an extension of their science class. People have been seeing and doing this since the dawn of time, but suddenly its gonna turn Danish kids into lunatics?

Emma- What the ever loving fuck are you talking about? Who mentioned ANYTHING about sport or fun?

Dyna Mo- I actually tend to agree. I dont think aquariums where marine animals are taught tricks and made to put on shows are ok. And I think the casinos that keep big cats are right out of line. But thats not what is being talked about here. This is a zoo led program to help try and bring some of the more endangered giraffe sub species back from the brink of extinction. This is good work they are doing. This animal died for the greater good of the species and they made sure its death served multiple positive functions. How anyone can see this as anything other than a good thing has got me fucked. It really does. Like, the Vatican has refused to change its internal policy on pedophilia amongst priests, there are kids in Africa being forced to be soldiers, here in Australia it has been uncovered that the Salvation Army (supposedly one of the most benign groups out there) has been systematically abusing children for decades, there is fucking INSANE shit going on in the world. And yet this, something which actually is a positive, is causing so much bullshit and furore. It boggles the mind, it really does.

I don't think it's our responsibility to save animals from extinction, it's a part of the process of life. Animals come and go. Also, its captive breeding that *saves* these animals. I would tend to think that if you asked an orca whale if it would rather die than spend its life living in a bathtub, or a lion to live in 1/10,000 the size territory it's supposed to survive in, they would both prolly ask for death. I've always found zoos very sad places.

Seeing as most animals that are on the brink of extinction are there due to human intervention I would say it is entirely our responsibility to save them. Except pandas, pandas are fucking stupid. If your species is dying out because you are too lazy to fuck, then you deserve extinction.

I donīt know if watching an autopsy might affect young children in a negative way (itīs their parentsī choice and the parents will have to deal with the consequences if there are any)

BUT I donīt understand why putting down a healthy young animal, why not get it neutered so it canīt breed?
Itīs not profitable for a zoo to keep an animal that wonīt breed? If yes, then why did the zoo workers 1) allow the inbreeding to happen 2) wait for a year and a half till the giraffe grows up?
If they knew the poor thing was a result of inbreeding why didnīt they euthanize it the day it was born?

To me it reminds the situation when a healthy cat/dog is taken to the vet with the request to euthanize it just because the owner doesnīt want it anymore or it turned out to be too costy to maintain. (Fortunately, there are some countries where owner-requested euthanasia of a healthy pet is prohibited. Even if we eat meat it doesnīt give us a license to kill everything just because we want)

i canīt believe they couldnīt start some kind of "adopt me" campaign like many zoos do and gather enough donations to keep him alive.

as I thought it was just a question of money.
i canīt believe they couldnīt start some kind of "adopt me" campaign like many zoos do and gather enough donations to keep him alive.
they don't 'own the giraffe', so therefore unable to collect money for him?

the point is a dead animal they can chop up in front of a willing crowd.

I just don't see it. What difference does it make if we save ferrets, conchs or spotted frogs, etc. from dying off. So we can feel better about ourselves for overrunning them? biodiversity?
