If you haven't noticed, Americans love everything but soccer, I mean football. Look at how they react to a new iPhone, they sleep out for days. They trample people to save $4 on an iron or get the latest doll for their kid. Many things are uniquely American.

Are there any stats on crime related to poverty vs guns? I think poverty is probably a factor more than gun ownership. Countries with a bigger social umbrella likely have less violent crime regardless of gun stats.

I was talking to an Australian once that visited Los Angeles. He was amazed that he didn't see anyone wearing a cowboy hat.

I live in Texas and I barely ever see cowboy hats!

Interesting read, not sure how that relates to a kid getting his hands on a gun and killing another kid in a school?

I have never purported to know everything about US gun culture. It is however blatantly obvious that there is a problem and surprisingly guns don't seem to be the problem if you ask any of you guys.

Soccer here in Australia too

Everything else you mentioned is what happens here sleep out for days for a phone / new game / movie etc...

However gun ownership is definitely not the same. Why would anyone need a machine gun for example?

Interesting, so what are the gun ownership stats versus gun homicides for California?

The USA has lots of poverty. I'd wager most of the violent crimes are committed those living in those inner city areas.

I live in a poverty stricken country with access to an insane amount of firearms. We don't have a lot of problems.

Not going to be fair on those numbers. California is full of minorities living in poverty and neighbors Mexico. You're probably going to have pretty high rates because of this.

Thailand seems pretty bad.

Quote:
Taken from the gun violence data out of dozens of countries surveyed in the Seventh United Nations Survey on Crime Trends and the Operations of Criminal Justice Systems (1998 – 2000), Thailand happened to be the country with the highest percentage of its homicides (reported) that were committed with a firearm. Simply dead said, the weapon murder choice for Thailand is the gun, more so than other countries.

For me it is a bit like comparing deaths in smokers teens versus the elderly.

They are both human and both smoke.

Does not really work does it, stats are what you make of them and we obviously disagree.

With re to Thailand, their culture is not of violence is it?

Naturally there are idiots in every country.

How many people do you think asked me if I had pet kangaroos and koalas when I was in the states last year? Add to that the number of people who also wanted to know if we had actual real roads / running water etc...

I have to admit, arriving in Texas was an interesting experience. It is very different to the rest of the US.

We have states and even property owners that have more land than small Euro countries so what?

It's ironic with all the non-American's calling us rednecks, when they don't know us, or have any clue. And the definition of a "redneck" is an ignorant bigot.

I honestly do not think they even know the definition of "redneck." Seriously, its like you or me going on a Russian board, posting in Russian and calling them some odd stereotypical Russian slang derogatory term. Or here, spin it easier, me going on Scandinavian forum and trying speak their language and rag on Stockholm! lol

LAME and ignorant. They are the very type of person they aim to put down.

The term characterized farmers having a red neck caused by sunburn from hours working in the fields. A citation from 1893 provides a definition as "poorer inhabitants of the rural districts...men who work in the field, as a matter of course, generally have their skin stained red and burnt by the sun, and especially is this true of the back of their necks"

for the record though, i see no nations, I see no lines and boundaries.

My brothers stretch from Australia to Amsterdam, from Finland to Canada.

Ive made money with so many people from various nations, I am proud to have had the opportunity to chat and interact with people from all over the world. You wont see me bashing Holland, or ragging on canada. My only regret is I cannot learn all the languages as many learn mine and talk to me in mine. From Czech to London.

money dont care which nation it come from.

Interesting the way in which you have interpreted those stats.

<sarcasm> Well all the anti-gun people are so smart, and they know the solution is so simple to just ban guns completely. It must not be a more complex issue than that. </sarcasm>

Heh.

In response to Dirty's question regarding the legality of owning "bazookas"; owning them is illegal.

An rpg would fall under the class of being "destructive devices" which are illegal to own by civilians in most, but not all, states.

Of course if you wanted to own one, you could set up a trust in a state that allows civilians to own them, and keep your destructive device or machine gun there legally.

California is a state which allows civilians and law enforcement to legally own destructive devices, but their ownership is limited solely to people with the proper permit.

California has never issued, to a civilian, a permit for a destructive device.

Anyone that turns this into a debate about guns is ignoring the cause of the incident. If you've never been the kid that was repeatedly jumped by groups of other kids or punched in the head for no reason while walking to class you wouldn't understand. Prejudice and racism grows strong within our school system.

I can honestly say I've never hit anyone in my life. I've never picked on anyone. I learned to accept the fact that 99% of people = shit.

I had easy access to guns and knifes but never brought one to school. Instead I started taking night classes along with day school to get the hell out of there. I couldn't take it any more.

Banning guns is not a solution. Eliminate the hate.

i don't see the irony at all

Homer Simpson was right when he said you still need guns to keep the King of England outa your face?

We have guns in order to keep TYRANNY out of our faces (at least to give us some sort of fighting chance)... whether it comes from our own government or another country's...

Defenseless public = Slaves.

That is probably true...but it is my opinion that is not necessarily a good thing. An accidental shooting is not a good thing...but some shootings are a good thing...because some people deserve to be shot...and I suspect that from the shooters perspective there are more people shot that deserve to be shot than don't deserve to be shot.

yeah I can get that and do understand it and if I lived in America I would buy myself a gun or 2 but im very glad I don't live in such a gun culture.

It's not just a tyranical government to be worried about when the entire population is armed and many of them crazy or angry. Its your next door neighbour who is more likely to shoot you than a government hit squad.

Defenseless public = Slaves.. umm perhaps but I don't feel like a slave

Armed public = people shoting each other all the time when they are pissed off
