A friend needs help. drugs. should I help?

I can tell someone who I think is a friend is doing way too many drugs.

they need help.

should I initiate an intervention in phoenix?

webmasterchecks 03-24-2008 08:01 PM

you should get some other webmaster friends to help, get a group together, the ones they have had beers with and are close with

i might actually do this

C_U_Next_Tuesday 03-24-2008 08:02 PM

They have to want to help themselves. An intervention doesnt work if the person is not receptive..for them to be receptive, they have to be at the point of wanting help.

baddog 03-24-2008 08:02 PM

Can I take pictures of it? Who will be the sponsor?

Jace 03-24-2008 08:03 PM

they have to want help, nothing you will be able to do unless they are wanting to help themselves

i'm hoping an intervention with a pile of their friends that love this person will help to wake this person up into realizing they DO in fact have a problem.

JA$ON 03-24-2008 08:07 PM

You should include someone sober. Someone in recovery who has been where they have been and pulled out of it. The key is to let them know that if the WANT help, that it is there. The choice to take advantage of that help will have to be theirs.

Good luck to your friend

they consider most of the people in online adult their friends and family - thus doing it in phoenix. most everyone they care about is there.

Anna_Miller 03-24-2008 08:15 PM

Bruce & I actually have tried this before. On multiple firends. It has gone two ways: 1. Really badly! Because she wasn't ready to hear it. After a few months months, she came around and agreed that she was out of control and needed help. She said we may not have gone about it the right way but she thanked us for caring enough to speak up. And 2. They blew us off and said they were ok and then avoided us.

If you care you should let them know you think its affecting them.

SHANESWORLD 03-24-2008 08:15 PM

glad i quit partying and drinking back in july of last year. otherwise, shit, people would for sure think it was me. LOLLLLLL.

punker barbie 03-24-2008 08:16 PM

hmmmmmmmmmmmmm

good luck with your friend.

IllTestYourGirls 03-24-2008 08:16 PM

If they are not ready to get clean then there is nothing you can do but confront them like you have said. Sounds like you are on the right track. But if they dont want to be clean no one can make them.

Serious question, what is their drug of choice?

there's a few of us who are willing to put in a few grand each for this person and actually have them hauled away to a rehab center.

i'm wondering if this would be a good idea....

i know this person will be using in phoenix....

tony286 03-24-2008 08:20 PM

Until they have their moment of clarity, your wasting your time.

There are laws against kidnapping in AZ.

my understanding is they have tried a lot of things but powder seems to be what they like

Stuntpig 03-24-2008 08:23 PM

Scott,

I can quit anytime I want, I just dont want to quit yet.
Is this about the time I lost my pants when we were skinny dipping in Curacao?
Or the time I sold you to that Ladyboy in Bangkok?
OK, I was drunk. And the Lexipro didnt help.
But I found my pants, and I bought you back ( Even made a couple bucks on the deal).
And now I only drink clear liquors. No more bourbon, whisky, tequila (cept silver) or that blue stuff that makes me so violent.
And they have reduced the meds to the point where I can legally drive in Mexico.

IllTestYourGirls 03-24-2008 08:23 PM

It is their choice not yours. Dont "haul away" but have the center ready after the intervention so you can send them directly after.

my understanding in how this company does it is thatthey catch them in the act(set up) and then they are presented with a choice when caught with an illegial substance..... rehab or jail.....

Peaches 03-24-2008 08:25 PM

If you're going to start interventions for the webmasters who do "too much" coke, you're going to be pretty darned busy.

Personally I wouldn't do it at Phoenix - I doubt CCBill wants the reputation of "The forum that had the drug intervention". Wait until it's over and do it right. There are intervention specialists you can talk to.

we won't let the media know who it is out of respect for ccbill.

no one will know what happened - it'll occur in a closed room and the person will be quietly removed when we go forward with it.

When they "catch" this person, the chances that they are going to "catch" many others is quite high. Plus media has nothing to do with it. All it takes is one person to know about it and it will be all over the show and then the entire industry within a week.

Waiting until they get home would be better and like I said, hire someone who does this professionally.

I respect what you're doing and you're a damn good friend for doing it and your heart's in the right place for sure - just make sure you do it the right way. Getting them to accept going to rehab is the hardest thing and being at a show when his/her buddies are partying right along with them will make it harder for them to make that decision. :2 cents:

Peaches 03-24-2008 08:45 PM

OK, seems like you've already made your decision. I hope your friend gets the help they need!

Jim_Gunn 03-24-2008 08:46 PM

The idea of doing an intervention at a webmaster convention is ridiculous. And no, the person does not have to be ready to quit for an intervention to work. The idea is for close family and friends who are affected by the addict to give them an ultimatum and back them into a corner by deciding to have nothing to do with that person anymore or help them, give them a place to live or give them money so the group can pressure them into going to rehab immediately *before* they think they are ready and before they kill themselves or hurt other people.

If you were REALLY his friend, you would lend him $200 so he could get another ball after he maxes out his credit card...

OK so now that we determined he can't do an intervention on me since I will not be there.

Tell me Scott, do I know the guy?

Varius 03-24-2008 08:54 PM

This is a question you shouldn't need to ask. If you believe he needs such an event to realize what's going on, then do it. If you don't think he's at that level yet, then don't.

If you only follow GFYers' votes, then perhaps someone else needs the intervention :upsidedow

Either way, see ya in Phoenix Scott :)
