the US is a nazi-esque police state
So my girlfriend and I were planning to go to NYC for a little vacation. Got to the border, they asked a few questions then asked if we had any criminal records. I said yes, I had something when i was 18 (I'm now 32). From there we were asked to get out of the car, i was told to not put my hands in my pockets. We went inside and waited a bit. Eventually they talked to us and said I can't enter.
Is this not retarded? I mean I can understand drug charges or recent charges but from when I was 18? FUuuuck. My girl is pissed and we are out a bunch of money from hotels. Does this stop real criminals? No..the people bringing back illegal stuff over the border will not use someone with a criminal record. All this does is keep millions of tourist dollars out of the US. What a disappointment. Oh but wait, you can get across if you pay their bribe fee of 545 and go through a bunch of shit to get a permission waiver (which takes months to a year). What a bunch of shit. i was fingerprinited and treated like a criminal when I have been a good upstanding citizen for 14 years. Who didn't do stupid shit when they were 18?

Wait until you get stopped again by border patrol 100 miles away from the boarder. Good luck man.

The blanket laws and enforcement which defy common sense are the problem. 2257 for example.

You are probably the only one who admitted a criminal record voluntarily. Do you think they would waste their time and actually check? In Canada?

What do you mean by that? I live less than 100 miles from the border. They said if i try to enter again I could be arrested and my car taken away..

I assume they can see that shit? I've read even getting a pardon won't stop customs from being able to see your record. Don't they see that when they scan your passport?

Well Mr Canadian who hates USA... I was denied entry to Canada due to a 14 year old unpaid appearance ticket of $100. So works both ways my dear.

Was the unpaid ticket in Canada? Otherwise, I can't see why they wouldn't let you in for that reason. Also you can pay 200 bucks at the canadian border and get through right on the spot apparently.

No but common sense goes a long way. There is a huge difference between someone convicted of a drug offense this year vs someone convicted of a property offense 14 years ago.

I don't know much about what a nazi is.
All I can think of is a book written by Herman Vinke or Command Magazine:Nazi Germany.

But if you had, yes, there really are internal checkpoints within 100 miles of any U.S. border. Typically, in northern and southern border states. And that includes states that many wouldn't think of as border states, such as Pennsylvania (Lake Erie) - I live in PA and yet many here don't realize it borders Canada. Furthermore, it's conceivable to encounter such internal checkpoints along the east and west coasts too, since the ocean itself counts as a border, though I'm not aware of that being widely, if ever, done. And before anyone blames Bush or Obama or 911 ... internal immigration checkpoints (not talking customs nor agriculture checkpoints) date back to at least the 1970s, and possibly even before that. Now the real tricky thing to think about are these laws meant to keep people out? or keep people in?
look deeper at what really is going on and it will make more sense to you. i got denied once, finger printed and so on, but i was trying to go for 5 months. this last time through i spent 1 month x2 this past year and they let me in with no problems. it really depends if the boarder agent is an asshole or not. |

If I could of paid the 545 on the spot, I would have preferred that. At least my trip wouldn't of been ruined.

Whether you believe what happened on 9/11 or not the fact is is that border laws increased drastically since then (seeing as the terrorists supposedly entered the States through Canada...) - I thought it was common knowledge that entering into the States wasn't allowed with a criminal record (without a pardon/waiver). Was this your first time trying to enter the States since you were 18? ![]() |

- they have records for Canada... I had an absolute discharge when I was 19 and was told that I'd be able to cross the border so-aslong as I admitted that it occured when asked if I had a criminal record... so far I haven't had any trouble in the multiple times I've been to the States... Though I've heard of other people with an actual record, getting hassled or not let across. |

I just dislike how the border guards always have such a rotten attitude.
They remind me of what you would get if you gave a mall cop unlimited powers. |

They have rotten attitudes because they deal with stupid bullshit all day long. Your inability to judge objectively is transparent.

That's why I live in Thailand.
Fuck all that nonsense. It's corrupt as hell and you can pretty much get away with anything for a fee. Wouldn't have it any other way. When the cops try to pull us over for breaking the traffic law, we make them chase us and laugh at them. Doesn't cost any more money. lol |

The US can see your record. Canada can see US records. I know this for a fact. I live 7 miles from the border. I have a record. I've been to Canada a few times on a work visa. I had to pay a bond to ensure I didn't stay. Yes there are internal checkpoints but the one closest to me on I87 is almost always closed. Its like they put it there only in case they ever had to lock down our borders. Its closed that much. 99% of the time.

In 1991 my now ex-wife went to a Justice of the Peace and had a warrant taken out on me for "uttering death threats". She originally went to the cops, they told her to go home and chill. But the JP listened, so... I was putting gas in my car one evening, and was surrounded by a shitload of cruisers. Got arrested. During my first appearance in court the charges were withdrawn when my ex told the judge that she lied, and only did it because I hurt her feelings when I left. This "incident" keeps getting brought up when I try to cross the border - even before 9/11. Good news is is that it hasn't stopped me from crossing, and I ended up getting custody of my kids because of her antics. Both of whom are in Guelph / Humber college now, btw. Border cops know everything you've done - whether you've just been charged, been convicted, aquitted, or whatever. On the other hand, I've fallen asleep in Ohio and woken up in Ontario, so I have no idea what they're thinking - at least on our side. |
