But if you had, yes, there really are
internal checkpoints within 100 miles of any U.S. border. Typically, in northern and southern border states. And that includes states that many wouldn't think of as border states, such as Pennsylvania (Lake Erie) - I live in PA and yet many here don't realize it borders Canada.
Furthermore, it's conceivable to encounter such
internal checkpoints along the east and west coasts too, since the ocean itself counts as a border, though I'm not aware of that being widely, if ever, done.
And before anyone blames Bush or Obama or 911 ...
internal immigration checkpoints (
not talking customs nor agriculture checkpoints) date back to at least the 1970s, and possibly even before that.
