Internext at the Palms this January: Are you going? How did you do last year?

I just read the PR about Internext at the Palms coming up this January by Tom Hymes:
http://business.avn.com/articles/36476.html

I for one am glad to see the Internext is on schedule as usual. I was a little worried since attendance at Internext Miami was lower than usual. We did well in Miami, but did really well at the January show. We sold more LiveCamNetwork licenses and did more business at that show than at any other Internext show.

I thought the Palms Hotel was pretty cool too. It was my first time at this Hotel and found everything about it quite nice and reasonably priced too. The clubs were kick-ass, and the Sushi restaurant was really, really good (Budha I think it was called).

I'd like to know how other people did at the show. What did you think about the show floor? Personally I thought it was ok, but getting to the booths upstairs was tricky when it was crowded.

Even though people are complaining that attendance is dropping, I am finding that people are doing more with less. I always look at the shows as an opportunity. Large or small, party-filled or not, A trade show is what you make of it. Meeting people, shaking hands, and exploring ways of doing business together should be your main reason for going.

Anyway, I'm already looking forward to the show. See you there!

The Palms was overpriced (I stayed at the Gold Coast across the street), full of cigarette smoke with almost no ventilation and the idea of a convention floor in a nightclub is really lame, in my opinion. That being said, I have been going to the adult show(s) in Vegas in January starting back from when the AEE convention was a curtained off section of CES, so I will be there, doing business, seeing old friends and making the most of the conventions as usual.

I'll be going just because it's Vegas. If I don't get a free badge, I'm not paying for one though, and will just hang out at the circle bar and around Vegas with different industry friends.

Gold Coast is still the best deal/value at that show, their new rooms are actually nicer than a lot of the Palms rooms, and the walk from the GC front door is less than say, the walk from Palms Place.

I second Fuze's comments.

Gold Coast rocks, we probably ended up seeing more industry people there and having a great drunken time with our special table and guests who kept dropping by at Friday's than we did at Palms.

Also, everyone I know who bought a badge for Palms was pissed off, as most people just hung out at the Circle Bar area anyways (while show floor was going on) which you didn't need a badge for.

I spend alot of time at the circle bars as it does seem like it is THE place to meet just about everyone. (Someone should sponsor this!).

Hanging out at the circle bar to meet show attendees while not paying for your badge yourself isn't cool. Just as much business is done at the circle bar as is on the show floor (moreso I'd say) but if you don't buy a badge you're ripping Internext off. They are the ones responsible for getting everyone in one place after all.

We had one of the sky boxes last january and it was soso
Overall good but taking into consideration what we paid for the skybox and the piss poor job they did at servicing us in the boxes i would never do it again.

Gave me a very sour taste in my mouth for that very reason.

Here is the situation:

You arrive at Internext and are heading to pickup a badge when you stop by the circle bar. You grab a drink, start talking to people and then tell them you have to go get your badge. They tell you not to bother, the show floor is dead, etc... Others all around concur.

Why would you go buy a badge? If you bought it in advance, as many do, then experienced the same thing, why would you buy one the following year?

If everyone is skipping the show floor and hanging out at the Circle Bar, Internext should either fix the problem with their Show Floor OR include the Circle Bar area as part of the show and require a badge to enter its area. Pretty simple IMO.

I see the costs & ROI in a social economic perspective.

Meaning, I see visiting shows as an investment in people & relationships with them.
Not beeing there means zero chance in business and being there means you at least have a chance. Maybe not today but in a few weeks, months, maybe even a year...
And that's next to the fact I LIKE to be there and really enjoy talking to people, sharing ideas, talk about the downsides, having a beer and learn a few new things in seminars and meeting the young new generation, who see everything differently then the old school.

Maintaining existing relationships & having fun with people you work with or wanna work with means everything.

If people say less folks are coming to the show, I'll say; "That means I have more time to talk with people that did come". Call me Mr. positive but IMO that is how it works.

When people have no funds to come to such a show, maybe the organisers can make a social digital network of attendees (and interested people) and charge a small fee to enter it, compared to visiting a show so at least the ones that could not make it, were sick or could not afford it still have a chance to catch up and do business. That I would consider good social economic behaviour and good for the entire industry. Put pics & videos on such a site of seminars, etc.

I must be babbling again...
But I'm also curious about what others think of such an idea.

I haven't decided yet, will possibly be spending alot of time in Vegas 2010, will have to see how things pan out a little closer to showtime.

Never thought about doing the Gold Coast, good suggestion.

I went two years ago and Although I had fun. The show itself was a disappointment.

I had fun because it was vegas and there were cool people. But the layout of the show sucks. Way too scattered and full of non industry people. Sure we have our own areas. But it was a biotch sometimes trying to hunt people down.

Dont get me wrong, there can and is business being done at internext. But if I had to limit myself to a number of shows a year. This would be one of the first shows to be crossed off the list.

That being said, I still might be attending just to hit the poker tables and see some friends.

I have made my travel schedule. Suggestions about the trip we are planning are welcome. http://www.gofuckyourself.com/showthread.php?t=931844

I had a nice room in Palms, they upgraded me to a suite when i tipped them
I think i go to the Caesers for the AAE and then move to Gold Coast or Palms for Internext.
Don't aks passes for the the circle bar, or give the escort babes free passes

i liked it last year. I don't have much to sell, but learning a lot and had a good time.

It's like the half full glass or the half empty glass (everlasting) discussion.

It is what YOU make of it that does the trick...not the location and not the No. of people coming there. That's just statistics.

Just being there does not cover it. You need to mingle, network, make sure your person/company/product is heard of and DO make friends and enjoy the experience (and the drinks too..).

Learned a lot from you last year. Especially to hear so much from the affiliate point of view without bullshit, just straight up & honest feedback.
It was fun too. Lot's of drinks offcourse and good food too and the other things that stay in Vegas...!

True dat.

Also, you need to find out Jack's rooms number and bills all your drinks to it. Works like a charm.

This is true, but comparing it to other shows and how they are all around better in layout.

I got biz done. I also had a lot of fun. But as i said, If i had to choose between shows, this one wouldnt be making the cut.

This is a fucked up epidemic that needs to stop. Fun n games is one thing, but some people get outrageous bills that they are not responsible for.

I was the one drinking on Jack's bill (and he on mine).

I think it is a good show. Just joined a few seminars. But talking to people at the bar and meet friends of friends gives you a lot of ideas how to make more money and learn about the whole industry. After sitting the whole day/month/year behind a computer you want to meet people in real and drink something. It is a world wide industry and meeting people from different places and with different niches is very interesting. Everybody likes to talk about their programms/biz. And when you need something, content, affiliates, traffic, programmers, billing solutions, hosting than you first look for the people you already met. I am planning to grow, so when i need something, i know where to go. After the show i got new energy and start working hard again, after two years of standstill due to health matters in the family.

For me Vegas is also fun, i like to travel and see a lot of countries and meeting different people. That's why i decided to go for 3 weeks and see more of the country. I was a bit sceptic going towards America, but now a want to see the whole country. Planning to go for another 4 weeks in june or so. (yes in this social country you have 6 weeks holiday)

I see a social plan comming for Jack. i don't know if the prices are to high. The additional cost like flight tickets, hotels, beer, strippers, beer, beer, food, wine, beer are higher. Maybe more open-circle bar sponsors could make it cheaper. But tickets AAE, Awards, Internext, are welcome. This year will be 10 times more expensive cause my GF is comming with me and i saw all that shops...

I think my money was well spend. The show floor wasn't impressive, i think that good be better. But the club parties, floor parties, circle bar, seminars and hotel where ok. Well organized.

That argument sounds strangely similar to "if you surf tubes for free instead of buying paysite memberships your ripping off the industry off."

Hmmm.... what to do.

Well first of all, I'd feel guilty as hell. I think alot of work goes into each Internext show and to show up and not even drop a couple o'hundred for a badge would make me feel pretty bad. Plus also since I flew all the way out to Vegas, I would be wasting my time and money if I didn't buy a badge. I don't know, but I see lots of value. The badge gets me onto the show floor where I can see what's new with exhibitors. I get to shop and / or sell and make new contacts. I also get to attend the seminars and of course the parties. To me, 2-3 days of open access is worth the money.

My thoughts exactly.

Oh by the way, if anyone is looking for an idea of something else to do while in Las Vegas. The last time I was there I had the opportunity to go boating and swimming on Lake Mead. It was cool as hell. The boat was a speed boat so we were zooming around all over the place, and pulled over to swim a few times. It feels like you're swimming on some alien world. The rocks & formations were really interesting to see up close. We also went swimming right near Hoover Dam. REALLY cool..

Anyway if you get bored of the strip and want a little nature check out the lake.

Since I and a lot of people I know have had many bad dealings with AVN both as a sponsor in the past and attendee, I wouldn't feel sorry for them at all. Putting on a show is a big job and the actual employees who do it work extremely hard I am sure, but as a company AVN is the epitome of greed

I have 60k unique daily traffic. I spread my traffic out and never put all my eggs in one basket. I can always tell a good program by the way their back end is set-up. I rather be under the radar.

Anyway, Internext would be nice but I wouldn't want to talk about business. All I do is sit in front of a plastic panel with lights and patterns. I need a vacation where I can disconnect for a few days.

Good luck to Internext and a successful party.

You may have seen it, I got hit by it in Florida. That shit is fucked up. Thankfully I had the funds to cover it and then deal with management. Just put a serious rotten cherry on the whole event.

After Miami I will be thinking twice before attending anymore "Internext" events,
I can see Vegas again on my own time.
Long and short any show that is not going to take care of its patrons and run a half assed event like this summers Miami will get no more of my money.
Mark hit me up today, not sure if you got my last few emails last week.
Cheers
