I've been thinknig about this a bit since you posted it.

You know, it takes a certain type of arsehole to turn an historical event where millions of people sacrificed their lives into some type of flag waving, self important pompous rendition.

Congratulations - you fail to see the point of D-Day remembrance completely.

Oh, didn't realise. I don't troll easily normally, but I don't think any of us really can get a handle on the sheer turmoil of the past world wars. Fortunately, the vast majority of us have never been touched by war - I have the utmost respect for those serving, and those who served.

Sure we can't handle it. But, 10-20 years from now we're going to have to, since it seems the world is heading towards another world war..

People just did what they had do. It was rarely brave, it was mostly logic.

I read this article last night and found it pretty interesting

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/31115510/

Next to it is a video interview with a soldier that was there. You sometimes forget how crazy it must have been. You know that sinking feeling when you get into a bad situation, well I can only assume when those landing boats opened up and the soldiers looked out, it must have been that feeling times 10 MILLION!!

The water was red and bodies were just floating past you. Crazy stuff.

But like most things, the planning of the invasion was a failure and the soldiers on the ground were the ones that pulled it off. Just like Iraq, the whole plan was a total fuck up, the soldiers on the ground should get all the credit for any success that comes from it. That seems to be how battles go. The leaders fuck up, and the soldiers end up pulling it off anyway.

I found a book and now can not find the info online but it says that a stone was found in North America that has the Etching of A templar knight. The stone etching dates back to about 600-300 BC which would put the Templar knights here Long before anyone else. And The guys that they believe it was were from Italy.

I think you need to be a bit more specific. While it is true that the US saved the despicable and cowardly French collaborators from the Germans they also sold out all of Eastern Europe at Yalta to Stalin. D-Day means nothing to the 300,000 Latvians who died in Vorkuta or the millions of others in eastern Europe who suffered under another 45 years of brutal totalitarian tyranny.

This thread should read "Attention cowardly and pitiful French collaborators".

You need to learn the difference between the french and the vichy french - because your history has some serious holes in it.

Just like every dutch person wasn't a collaborator during their occupation, same goes for the french....

Everyone mentions the Americans and the Brits, even the Free French that participated in Operation Overlord, but I really feel the Canadians don't get their due. From what I read they faced the toughest shore defenses in their sector and suffered the highest casualties (percentage wise) of any of the allies. If anyone should be getting a big thank you, it's those goofy Canucks since it really wasn't their fight. We were already in it when the Japanese attacked us and the Germans started sinking our convoy escorts, but the Canadians could have sat that one out and opted not to.

That is because everyone thinks of Canadians as neutral, which they are for the most part. (percentage wise)

Who is "we"? Were you storming the beaches with the rest of us? The people who sacrificed their lives in that war deserve a thanks, but classifying yourself or anyone else here as one of those people is an insult to them. Watching what happened on the history channel or reading it in an 8th grade social studies book doesn't mean you had anything to do with it.

Oh please.. Once again a flag waving fucktard wants a thank you for something that was only done in the best interest, national security etc. of the country itself. The US "had" to sacrifice and rebuild Europe because of Russia... So don't make out like it was some high an mighty noble act.

WWI, WWII.. Our forces are often deep in the shit and take a major beating but we're no fucking candy asses that's for sure... Our guys get pretty fucking badass when there's a job to be done. We've taken major casulties in Afganistan in the fight against the Taliban etc. i.e. while the US has taken around 500 casualties and we've taken 120 or so, we have less than 10% of the US forces over there so we've actaully taken more casualties as a percentage. And it's not that our forces are crappy, it's that we've been in the front line of the action there.

You have to remember though that at the time we were still more tightly tied to Britain and really, had to defend the "motherland".. I didn't realize until just the last few weeks though just how instrumental our ports and tiny little navy was in ensuring the convoys kept the supplies flowing into the UK.
