Do you listen to internet radio?
There's been talk that Pandora may be closing down due to the new proposed royalty rates. Pandora would only be the latest in a long line of Internet radio stations closing their doors so I wondered, does any one here listen to internet radio? And what do you think will happen if Pandora shuts it's doors... will that officially mean the end for online radio?

For any one who is interested, you can always write your senators and congressmen and ask them to support internet radio.

actually a smart move on pandora's part with over 40,000 listeners a day hitting their streams - and with FCC governed radio stations now having to pay royalties (the first time ever)- and with their forecasted and long over due move to internet as a revenue stream ... it is going to be the most interesting game of chess anyone has seen in decades

What I'm suggesting is not that they overturn any copyright laws. In fact I'm very supportive of copyright in general. What I do not support is hiking up the rates on internet broadcasters just because a bunch of suits don't think they are making as much money as they should of webcasters. What I want is fair rates across the board instead of this
tiered system of terrestrial radio pays x amount of dollars, satellite pays y amount of dollars while us internet broadcasters pay z amount of dollars (roughly twice what any one else is paying on royalty rates). |

It is true that terrestrial radio stations do NOT pay performance royalties. As far as I know they do however pay out to the songwriters though. Here are some links regarding terrestrial radio stations and they royalties they don't pay along with the facts on what satellite and internet broadcasters are paying. BetaNews PC Mag Daily Tech Mercury News All articles listed are from 2008 though I admit one is from as far back as May of this year. |

How the fuck do they pay songwriters without it being a performance royalty? That's the only fucking thing they pay!!!!!! Ever here of "Mechanical Rights"? Well they don't pay that. Performance rights is exactly what they pay. http://www.scena.org/lsm/sm5-4/Copyrights-en.htm I didn't even bother to read your stupid fucking links to another group of idiots that have only seen a college from the freeway when they drove by. GET A FUCKING GRIP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 If you want to use someone else's shit, then fucking pay for it. What's so fucking hard to understand about that concept!

You?re right I did sound like an idiot. Thank you for pointing out my too quick fingers - I should have said until recently terrestrial radio did not pay a royalty to record labels and performers for the right to perform their music. Congress had given the broadcasting community an exemption from paying these royalty, arguing the performance of music on terrestrial radio has promotional value sufficient to constitute compensation.
btw what's wrong with fighting city hall isnt that what an adult webmaster does every day of their lives fight the norm - goes against the grain and pushes the envelop |

It's not about copyright infringement, it's about internet radio stations being forced to pay exorbitant royalties relative to regular radio. I don't know how Pandora works (I know how it works as a listener, but not the back end stuff), but I do have a Live365 station which keeps me somewhat up-to-date on the bullshit. I wish I could articulate it really well for you, but all I can do is say is internet radio is not just whining "why can't we broadcast music for free?"; these are sites that already do pay to broadcast and the recording industry and big broadcasting are trying to kill internet radio completely.

that doesn't charge as much. Nothing is stopping you from taking every shit band in your state and putting their music on the radio and playing it for free if the bands agree. What's stopping you is that you don't want to play every shit band because their music is worthless. You'd like the benefit of using something that is worth something and pay nothing for it. What you're doing is trying to strike a "good deal" on music by changing the law. Yet you have no idea what this will means to new music. If there is no money in writing songs and producing music then great people are going to leave the biz to do something to pay there bills which means no more good music. The whole issue of the copyright thing really hindges on the public's ignorance about the cost of making music. People think they can make a song for $200 bucks. I spent 5 years trying to get a decent song together for a record deal and spent at least 20k in recording, equipment, labor, demo tape, vinyl etc... and never produced shit that was worth a dime. Ok, one song did make about $3500. And I'm pretty sure I rounded up that figure. I had to give that shit up. And this is just the begining. I was recording in studios with guys that were already singed and they had recording budgets of 100k and most of their shit FLOPPED!! Where the fuck is the money going to come from to pay for this? This doesn't even include printing the music (putting on CD etc...) , or MTV video production, or distribution, or promotion, or art work, or managment fees of 15%, plus agent fees of 10%, plus legal fees, plus copyright fees, plus ASCAP dues, plus AFTRA dues, plus a lot of other stuff that my bouron is blocking out now. ![]() Think about the Michael Jackson flop : http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,319537,00.html Quote:
Others aren't spending 50 million but they are spending as much as they have, because look at the competition who is spending 50 million! You think you can make a song to compete with Michael Jackson for space on the sales rack? I'd like to see anyone do that on a $200 budget without having the "Paris Hiltion Phenomenon" working for them. She sucked one fucking dick and got a million bucks for it, now you try that. Maybe if you spend $300,000 promoting yourself sucking a dick you can get a million. That's where the musicians are.

Small broadcasters and small artists suffer because they don't have the juice to
pull the crowd. And you are suggesting that artist that can draw a crowd let shit artist piggy back on their money. Face it. You think JaneB is dumb; but you are an educated fucking fool. If you got up off your lazy fucking ass one day and recorded a song that you knew would be a hit you would be the biggest fucking bitch in the world if you had 30 million people downloading your music and you only had a check for $600. You're the bitch on the porn set who won't even open her pussy but is screaming and shouting at the first time 18 yr old to take two 10 inch black cocks up her ass at once for $300. You may be more articulate than JaneB but you're way more more fucking stupid.

sortie is kinda right, they created it, so they make the rules... they run a business just like the rest of us, and want to squeeze as much $$ out each record as possible... it sucks for end-users and internet-radio owners, but if you don't like the rules, get music from somewhere else...

No, Sortie is not kinda right, he's kinda retarded; the people that CREATED the music are not the ones making these rules, and he can't seem to acknowledge for a second the major point being made that the rates they are asking webcasters to pay are disproportionately higher than radio. Actually, he can't acknowledge any points being made because he's too busy screaming about how none of us understand the meaning of the word "copyright" and is too bitter, apparently, about his failed music career.

I don't know where I got the mistaken impression your synapses were firing more efficiently than the average GFYer, but I was mistaken. You're not even making sense. This isn't about letting people download music for free/steal all the tunes they want, it's about letting people BROADCAST music at a reasonable rate that isn't clearly inflated for the sole purpose of protecting the "music" industry's chosen few talentless stars and corporate bigwigs.

I don't even know which part of Sortie's bourbon-tainted crap to try to quote, but I think I figured out part of the problem: his definition of "music" is whatever people watch on MTV; he has no concept of the awesome, talented artists who are already making music on shoestring budgets, touring in shitty places, and not getting huge corporate funding or any exposure outside of word of mouth and webcasts because everyone's been brainwashed into thinking MTV and Idol define "talent".
The people trying to fuck webcasters aren't trying to HELP real musicians get rewarded financially, they're trying to FUCK them and everybody who wants to listen to real music by limiting our choices to the few people they want to promote. |

for these companies. And if they are so talentless then why do you need their music? The "bigwigs" have mortgaged their property to produce these talentless stars and they want their money back so they can keep their fucking house. Do you want to get rid of talentless stars??? Then quit playing their shit!!! Dumb Bitch!! And fuck how you think my "synapses were firing more efficiently" since the bourbon whiskey I've been drinking degrades cholinesterase. ![]() I'm fucking tired of dumb people. Tell Yahoo to open up it's shit message board again and go back where you belong.

It's real simple.
If a band want people to hear there music for free then they can just upload it to youtube and go to fucking sleep. But of course, if they suck like a fucking blow fish then they won't get any views. So, OH NO!!!! Not youtube, where you have to make it on your own merit. It's much better to try to insert your shit song in between Kanye West and Perl Jam(or whoever makes that shit ) on a broadcast. This is all about soul searching wimpy shit artist who are trying to find themelves thru the music of those that have reached the mountain top already. Fuck them, their music sucks. Why don't you attack prime time TV and tell them to play 5 minutes of some shit band you like before the nightly news. Why just fuck with radio?? Oh, I guess you know you'll be told to take a hike by every network already.
