Here are some of the details I've read (from old emails, but anyway):

Recently, the Copyright Royalty Board (CRB) made an initial ruling of alarmingly high new royalty rates for Internet radio for the 2006-2010 period. The ruling increased sound recording royalties by 140% over the next 4 years and included a $500 minimum fee per station per year. The CRB is now rehearing our arguments against these unrealistic fees, but we must keep the pressure on.

This would totally kill little indie hobbyist stations with very few listeners but diverse playlists giving exposure to underplayed artists. This isn't about making internet broadcasters pay a FAIR share, it's about destroying them and maintaining control of the star factory while making small broadcasters AND small artists suffer.

the Copyright Royalty Board decided to single out Internet radio and force webcasters to pay higher sound recording royalty rates than those paid by AM/FM and satellite radio.

Yes, that's info from a biased source and while I did go to college, I didn't take any classes on any of this, but I do think it's enough information for people (especially people who love music and don't think corporations should be able to control what we hear to this extent by squeezing out everything except the people who broadcast American Idol's top three) to be really fucking pissed and write to their reps.
