New Orleans: Where to go and what to do?
I'm going to be in New Orleans in a couple of weeks, flying in on Wednesday and leaving the following Monday. My friend and I will be guys-night-outing Wednesday and Thursday, with my girlfriend joining us that Friday. What are the best places to hear some good live blues and rock? What should we not miss while we're there?
The day-and-a-half I spent in New Orleans on my from from Vegas was one of the best times I've ever had, so I have high hopes for this trip. I know we have a few webmasters in the area, so point me to the fun. Thanks, SpaceAce |

Drive-through daiquiris? Heh, where does one find those and how are they served? Can they be shipped? I think it would be pretty funny to send someone a daiquiri through the mail.

No, they cant be shipped and they are all over the place, look kinda like lil shack type place but you will see the signs...You can either go in or drive through. The have different sizes and also sell by the gallon, which is what we did for a party...funny thing was people were always having to go get more cuz we went through them fast! I think they have about 30 different flavors and they are really good...
O...and they will give you small samples if you cant decide what you want and you can mix them...They dont skimp on the liquor either! |

Preservation Hall, the Funky Pirate and Maison Bourbon Jazz Club are pretty good places to catch good blues and jazz. As for things to do, I am always partial to the tours of St. Louis cemetery and any of the voodoo museums. There are some pretty good tours available too. Plus, just walking along Jackson Square and seeing all the people and activities is always fun.

I was there last year, I had a hotel facing Toulouse and Bourbon St in the heart of the Quarter, so that is a given, lots of live bands and drinking there. Check out the House of Blues website for NOLA listings and see who is playing that weekend. Man too bad you aint there this coming weekend, it's Jazz fest. There is a Harras casino not too far from the Quarter.
There is a locals joint quite aways from the quarter called Jacques imos www.jacquesimoscafe.com they have a truck parked in front of it with a table and chairs in the back of it, thats is seating if the place is packed, and it will be. Fun time there!

OK, taking a gallon of daiquiri back to the hotel room actually sounds kind of fun. I will have to look into this. Actually, lugging a gallon of daiquiri around the quarter with a straw in it also sounds kind of fun. Thanks for the heads-up.

I will also check out Jacques-Imos. I don't mind travelling away from the Quarter, I might even end up staying in Metaririe. Way to go with the ideas everyone, thank you. I want to hear more, though, so don't be shy about adding to the thread. SpaceAce |

For touristy crap hit Bourbon street with all the other Ametuers, head down to boubon and St Phillps and get a drink at Laffites. And if your looking for some real good music without all the touristy prices, head to Frenchmen Street where all the locals go for good music ( the guy at the apple barrel plays some amazing blues) Crawfish are in season so get out of the Quarter and head up Magazine Street to The Bulldog bar, go across the street and get your crawfish and bring them back to the bar and eat them in their courtyard. Magnus was right on the money with suggesting JacquesImo's was there a few weeks ago and cant be beat but expect to wait. Too bad you not there on a tuesday, the bar next door has the Rebirth Brass Band, just a amazing 10 pc brass band that will blow your mind. Plus the place is packed with hot college hunnies. Cohon is another mazing place to eat, but only if you like pig. And if your looking for the best of the best in NO go to Stella, that is my favorite restuarant on the planet, its so good its almost like sex. Hit me up if you like, i know alot of places down there that are off the beaten path and are worth going to

Frenchman Street
Walk up and Down Frenchman Street just off of Esplanade Ave.
Its an amazing spot with mostly locals there. Walk past Esplanade towards the Quarter and hit Molly's on Decauture St. All of the places in between rock. Lesse Le Bon Temps Rouler! Geaux Hornets! |

I lived there for 4 years, and had a restaurant there. Trying to put together a show there, actually...
Go to One Eyed Jacks for drinks, and see if they have any shows going on. It's a great place. Eat at Angeli on Decatur at least once. As was mentioned above, try Frenchman street, including DBA and the spotted cat. You can do the typical tourist thing on Bourbon (I used to live at Bourbon and St. Ann), and find something for just about anyone, but Lafitte's Blacksmith is one of my favorite places there. Have a Mint Julep at Napoleon House. Visit the Pharmacy Museum; it's cooler than it sounds. It's on Charters next to If you like Sushi, go to Rock N' Sake in the CBD. Take The Streetcar uptown, get off at First street, hang a LEFT (DONT GO RIGHT), and walk through the Garden District. Visit the St Louis cemetery on Prytania and Sixth (I think it's sixth). If you want any more suggestions, or can give me an idea of what sort of things you like to do, I've got a long list. |

Living in Miami, there's plenty of SCUBA opportunities to be had (assuming I can find a wetsuit in my size). I'm looking to do things that are exclusively New Orleans
![]() This thread kicks ass, I am getting all kinds of great suggestions. Isn't Laffites the oldest bar in America? It's down near the intersection where Bourbon street suddenly turns incredibly gay, right? I didn't make it in, last time, but I will this time. Thanks for the detailed replies, SinisterStudios and DarkCircus, you've given me lots of direction. I like brass, and if it's really that good, there's no reason I can't work in a Tuesday to hear Rebirth. We will definitely take a stroll on Frenchman and we will probably take the streetcar and be sure to GO RIGHT (I have a flash of Mayor Quimby: "Do not take the Jefferson Avenue exit. For God's sake, do not take that exit.) Thanks to you guys, it looks like my New Orleans dance card is filling up. I guess I will have plenty to do. |

yes, that's lafitte's alright. It's an interesting place, particularly for early evening drinks. It's down past the gay section, really; at the end of the block where Clover Grill is (opposite side of the street). Stay between Magazine and Saint Charles for the most part, when walking through uptown/ the garden district. Going right will take you to Claiborne...for god's sake, don't go toward Claiborne, lol. Speaking of Magazine street; there are some cool restaurants (Juan's flying burrito) and shops at Magazine and Jackson, and a great Po boy/Gumbo shop at Magazine and First. If you are looking for exclusive New Orleans things, you can try the Oak Alley Plantation tour (but it'll eat up a large part of your day). I'd suggest a swamp tour, but you have swampland and gators in Florida too too ;) |

Oh, and I almost forgot; If you can, eat at Irene's on Chartres.
Avoid NOLA, Emeril's restaurant. I took a party of 8 there, they spilled my food on me, and only offered me a t-shirt. Not one of the kind that you'd buy; the sort they give the dishwashers. They have notoriously bad service there. |

Save your money, Emerils is for people who dont know better. If you want high end try Stella ( my favorite restuarant on the planet) Herbsaint, Bayona, GW Fins ( awesome Seafood) or Cochon ( all pig all the time), but but all means avoid Emerils its just a waste of time there are tons of better resturants in NO. Some of the top places in the US are in NO, in fact Cochon was named one of the top 5 resturants in the US by the New york Times and Stella is Pretty much the best Resturant in NO right now. Make sure you get some Crwafish while your there, their in season and make sure you stop at Felix's for Oysters ( if you like oysters) and get them at the bar (they shuck them fresh for you as you eat them.

We're definitely going to skip Emeril's. I'm not all that interested in a chain or a "name" place like that, anyway. I want to check out the unique, local stuff. I figure, if the place is called Emeril's and Emeril isn't in the back cooking, it's a scam. I'll have to look into Stella and see if we can eat there without taking out an equity line of credit.

Stella is going to run you $250 - $400 for dinner for 2 but its well well worth it is you can afford it. I go there at least once a year, also the chef/owner of Stella just opened up a sister restaurant called Luke which is more brunch related stuff and much cheaper. But the best bang for you buck will be down by frenchman street or up on magazine. And dont forget to take the streetcar up to Jacque Imo's (oak i think) be prepared to wait but its well worth it.
